Abstract

Protein interactions play an essential role in the study of how an organism can be infected with a disease and also its effects. One of the challenges in computational methods in the prediction of protein-protein interactions is how to represent a sequence of amino acids in a vector so that it can be used in machine learning to create a model that can predict whether or not an interaction occurs in a protein pair. This paper examined the qualitative feature encoding methods of amino acid sequence, namely, multivariate mutual information (MMI), and the quantitative feature encoding methods, namely, autocorrelation. We develop the new design for MMI and autocorrelation feature encoding methods which give better results than the previous research. There are four ways to build the MMI method and six ways to build the autocorrelation method that we tested. We also built four types of MMI-autocorrelation (mixed) method and look for the best form of each type of MMI, autocorrelation, and mixed-method. We combine these feature encoding methods with support vector machine (SVM) as machine learning methods. We also test the encoding methods we propose to several machine learning classifier methods, such as random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and gradient boosting.

Abstract

Neurotrophin Factor 3 (NTF3) is one of the genes that plays an important role in the regulation of the neural systems of vertebrate animals, this gene has a special function in explaining the survival factors of some vertebrate animals. Based on the information obtained from GenBank, the nucleotide sequence of the NTF-3 gene in several vertebrate animals has been known and some of the data obtained have not been studied further for research purposes in adding information related to the molecular character of the NTF-3 gene, such as the NTF-3 gene in Columbidae. Columbidae is a group of birds that have quite diverse species variations, the number of species in columbidae will be very helpful in obtaining data on comparisons of the genetic character of the NTF3 gene. The purpose of this study was to analyze and describe the information on the NTF-3 gene (Neurotrophic Factor 3) in Columbidae through the in silico approach with computational methods. The NTF3 gene nucleotide sequences in Columbidae showed a fairly high level of similarity to the base sequences. This illustrates the fairly close proximity between each species. Geotrygon Montana is a species of Columbidae which has variations of the Base sequence which is quite different from other species. Evaluation of the model structure shows good stability of each target protein, all evaluation results describe a good structure, meaning that the conformation of each target sequence is in accordance with the sequence, so that the structure that is built has high accuracy with the actual model. The results of this research study can be a special description in explaining the genetic characteristics of several Columbidae species for the purposes of conservation measures or efforts to preserve Columbidae species at the molecular and population genetic levels.

Abstract

In a health crisis, social media is one of the primary means of disseminating and receiving information. Nevertheless, questions remain regarding what facilitates individual engagement in sharing or receiving information in the context of COVID-19, specifically for the Indonesian context. Analysis of a questionnaire survey among 255 from the random population of Indonesian showed that sharing information is predicted by gender and education. There was no significant relationship between social-demographic and receiving information. For psychosocial characteristics, personal risk perception predicted receiving information, while sharing information was predicted by societal risk perception. Societal risk perception and self-efficacy interacted with each other to predict the sharing of COVID-19-related information. One of the findings indicated a socio-cultural feature through which is considered to play an important role in personal and societal risk perception when sharing or expressing information. Given the benefits of social media communication during this pandemic, this study suggested that governments and policymakers should pay closer attention to a local community that is more effective in keeping everyone safe. Unfortunately, on another side, social media provides less information about narratives, storytelling, and empathy to maintain public trust.

Abstract

Increasing population has an impact on increasing food supply to fulfil the requirement of the community. Increasing in food supply is able to be achieved by increasing the agricultural productive area. Low-water agricultural technology is one of technology can be applied in the development of agricultural areas with sufficient water availability. But on the other hand, water harvesting technology using pond is one approach in the development of agricultural land in dry areas. This study uses a geographic information system (GIS) approach to identify areas that have high potential for the development of water harvesting ponds in East Java Province, Indonesia. GIS approaches is used for spatial analysis in calculating the area potential index for the ponds deveopment based on climate, physical surface and vegetation indicators. This index is calculated based on indicators, each of which is obtained from the surface parameter data. The results of the study show that the East Java Province is categorized as the "very suitable" and "appropriate" areas on water harvesting ponds suitability by 55% and 23%, respectively. This results show that the potential of the East Java area for developing water harvesting pond is very high about 78% compared with the entire region. On the other hand, locations that is categorized as "not suitable" and "very inappropriate" are about 8.7% and 9.2% compared with total area of East Java Province. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the electroencephalography (EEG) power spectral analysis and saccadic eye movements (SEM)’s the response toward true and false information. The research method was conducted using an experimental design with true and false autobiographical information as stimuli. There were23 female participants aged between 19-24 years old (M=21,45; SD=1,5). The results showed a significant difference in the number of SEM between false information and true information. The EEG power is greater in the frontal, temporal and central areas for false information. Interestingly, we found a correlation between EEG power and SEM in detecting true and false information. Our result findings indicated evidence of multimodality by combining electroencephalography (EEG) and saccadic eye movement (SEM) to dissociate false and true information responses. The distinct dissociative process between true and false information can be used for memory studies and developing lie detectors.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of financial information quality on managers’ financing decision-making. It also investigates the role of managers’ characteristics – educational background, gender, and working period – on the relationship between the quality of financial statement information and financing decision-making. The samples were finance managers at Bank Aceh Syariah, a Syariah bank owned by the regional government in Aceh, consisting of 24 finance managers at the branch offices and 86 finance managers at sub-branches that spread throughout Aceh. The data was obtained by using a questionnaire distributed using google form. A multivariate analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The results showed that the quality of financial statement information has a positive effect on financing decisions. It becomes the basis for managers in making financing decisions in Islamic banks owned by local governments. Managers’ characteristics do not influence financing decisions and do not strengthen or weaken managers in making financing decisions based on financial statements. The result confirms hypothesis 1, however, it does not support any other hypotheses regarding finance managers’ characteristics. Therefore, it is suggested for future research to broaden and compare the characteristics of finance managers of national Islamic banks in Indonesia and Islamic banks from other countries to capture comprehensive results.
