Abstract

Numerous studies suggest that transitivity system is applicable to examine characters in traditional literatures such as novels or short stories. Today, videogame is considered as a modern literary work by offering interactive and innovative way to deliver the narrative. The present study investigates the characterization of Connor Kenway – the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed III (2012) videogame, using transitivity system. This study aims to examine the identified process types in terms of their contributions to Connor’s characterization. This study employs Creswell (2018) descriptive qualitative method involving textual analysis of the dialogues in the videogame. The dialogues were transcribed and analyzed following the concepts of Systemic Functional Linguistics on transitivity system. The study applies purposeful sampling technique, in which the data are categorized into three groups; dialogues spoken by Connor himself, the supporting characters, and the villain characters. Focusing on the use of transitivity system, the analysis found that the identified transitivity processes uniquely construe the portrayal of Connor’s complex characterization. Firstly, he is portrayed as a vengeful man. Secondly, he is portrayed as an intelligent man with high cognitive abilities. Thirdly, he is portrayed as a hero and savior according to the supporting characters while also as a criminal and savage according to the villain characters. Fourthly, he is portrayed as a man with cautious nature. Lastly, he is portrayed as a useful informant. The result of this study suggests that transitivity system is a versatile tool for examining the portrayal of characterization in videogames.

Abstract

The meaning of the language used in reviews can be evaluated using the attitudinal resources within the appraisal system proposed by Martin White in 2005. The framework provides the attitude subsystem that helps identify the clauses in the categories of Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation. This research aims to examine the attitudinal resources that occurred in the reviews of the "Yellowface" (2023) novel by Rebecca F. Kuang on the Goodreads website and how the reviewers' attitudes are expressed. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data was taken from the Goodreads website based on the top five popular reviews. After analyzing the clauses in the collected data, the researcher then classified them into three categories of attitudinal resources. From the 169 clauses that were identified, the results show that both positive and negative features and all resources occurred in the reviews, with Appreciation being the highest resource that is used, followed by Judgement and Affect. Based on the findings, this research argues that the reviewers tend to evaluate the book's content more than to judge the behavior of the author and the book's characters or to express their emotions concerning the book. As a result, the use of Appreciation might help other readers know the values and qualities of the book.

Abstract

This study examines positive politeness strategies in commissive speech acts on billboards of legislative candidates in the Banyumas Regency in 2024. Prospective legislative candidates use this billboard to capture votes in their constituencies. Campaign billboards often contain political promises as a form of commissive speech acts.  This study aims to fill the gap in previous research that has not examined commissive speech acts in the context of campaign billboards, emphasizing a pragmatic approach to understanding how language functions in political communication. All the data were in the form of text from 210 billboards photographed along Banyumas protocol roads, and 30 of them contained positive politeness. The data were analyzed based on positive politeness strategies according to Brown and Levinson’s theory. The results showed that legislative candidates used eight positive politeness strategies to express commissive speech acts. Those strategies are giving promises, giving reasons, being optimistic, being concerned about the hearer’s wants, making jokes, using group identity markers, giving gifts to the hearer, and using exaggeration. These strategies help convey campaign messages clearly and attract the attention of potential voters. This research contributes to understanding the use of language strategies in the context of political campaigns and proposes further research to evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in winning voters’ votes. The findings are expected to provide practical benefits for legislative candidates and enrich the study of pragmatics in the political context.

Abstract

This study examines Geoffrey Chaucer's The Wife of Bath's Tale through Vladimir Propp's narrative functions as a means of understanding how Chaucer follows and subverts traditional structures of folktales. The Canterbury Tales is one of the most important works in medieval literature, while The Wife of Bath's Tale is especially famous for its complex depiction of gender relations, power, and moral teaching. The purpose of the investigation is to explain the structural elements of the tale using Propp's 31 narrative functions applied to folk stories. In mapping these functions onto the tale, the research underlines how Chaucer follows conventional patterns of storytelling but innovates in crucial areas, mainly when it comes to gender roles and moral redemption. This study used a structuralist approach which examines exactly how this knightly quest of redemption was non-traditional in that his intellectual and moral growth was pitted against the more physical challenges of traditional narratives. The results of the analysis are that 18 of Propp's functions are represented, whereas several of the most important functions—struggle and victory among them—are negated. Through this, Chaucer attacks the gendered prescription of medieval society and, through the figures of the queen and the old woman, develops firm arguments for female self-determination. The study concluded that Chaucer draws upon Propp's narrative structure in his resistance to and rearticulation of socially held attitudes regarding gender, power, and heroism—to develop the tale into a progressivist critique against traditional medieval values.

Abstract

Discourse concerning sexuality in Indonesia is influenced by religion, social norm, and the Pornography Law that governs the circulation of media with explicit sexual content. However, bookstores in Indonesia sell translated novels with explicit sexual scenes. One of such novels is Terbuka Untukmu (2013), the Indonesian translation of Sylvia Day’s Bared to You (2012). This research aims to analyze how the discourse concerning sexuality itself is limited (Foucault, 1972) and how such limitation(s) (Levefere, 1992) influences the translation of sexual expressions and their synonyms in the novel. This research was conducted by applying the corpus-based descriptive analysis approach using Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation procedures (1995). This research found that there were synonymous expressions with differing degree of vulgarity that were translated into the same expressions. Vulgar and neutral expressions were translated into the same expression, and so were vulgar and positive expressions. However, neutral and positive expressions were not translated into the same expression. It can be concluded that the discourse concerning sexuality in the target readers’ society is limited through the usage of the sexual expressions in order to significantly reduce the vulgarity of the expressions which was present in the source text and to minimize the inclusion of female genitalia so that the translation is more acceptable among the target readers. This study will also help in showing English to Indonesian translators the diversity of translating certain sexual expressions in literary translations.

Abstract

This study delves into the use and impact of fanilect, a specialized form of language, within Taylor Swift’s fandom on TikTok. By employing discourse analysis, it examines the various forms and functions of fanilect in this digital community. The findings reveal four key types of fanilect: jargon, which consists of specific terms and phrases used only within the fan group; intertextual references, where fans incorporate Taylor Swift's lyrics or cultural references into their interactions; routine interactions, such as repeated behaviors or phrases during events or online discussions; and multimodal communication where fans express themselves through a combination of text, images, and videos. Furthermore, the study identifies fanilect's roles in shaping the dynamics within the Swiftie fandom. First, it contributes to identity formation, helping fans identify themselves as part of the community. Second, it establishes power structures, where knowledge of fanilect signifies status within the fandom. Third, fanilect fosters community building by encouraging emotional connections and shared experiences. Lastly, it enhances creative expression, allowing fans to engage with the fandom in varied and artistic ways. This research provides critical insights into how fanilect influences community interactions and identity within Taylor Swift’s fanbase, offering broader implications for understanding linguistic practices in digital fan cultures.

Abstract

This research is about translingual practice in a digital context (social media), namely the Indonesian infotainment’s Instagram @folkative account. This research is essential because translingual practice increasingly influences social media interaction in this globalized era, enriching cross-cultural expression and creating a digital presence. This qualitative research aims to analyze the pattern(s) of translingual practice and how these patterns are/are applied in the mentioned account. Three theories, Canagarajah’s (2013a) translingual practice theory are used as the core theory, Zappavigna’s (2021) theory of discourse and social media, and Barton’s and Lee’s (2013) theory of computer-mediated communication (CMC) as the supporting theories. The results of this study demonstrate that translingual practice in the @folkative account suggests a complex negotiation process showing the fluidity of languages and the fluidity of interactional modalities. Moreover, digital translingual practice also contains a basic norm of translingual practice: breaking language boundaries, social justice, emotional effect, and social subjectivity. We suggest that future research could broaden the scope of digital platforms to blogs, websites, or online news platforms in order to get a broader and deeper understanding of digital translingual practices.

Abstract

Language is pivotal in fulfilling human communicative needs, such as transactional and interactional functions. In the latter function, language is employed, one of which is to build social and personal attitudes, or so-called poetic or imaginative function.  Such functions can be accessed through songs or song lyrics. Motivated by the previous argument, this paper aims to describe construction types and categories of hyperbolic expressions found in various Indonesian song lyrics, comprising the genres of “kroncong,” “dangdut,” and other popular songs. To provide the evidence, this study collected data from YouTube and carefully examined how the song lyrics involve hyperbolic expressions. The analysis also comprised identifying the types of hyperbolic expressions in terms of their linguistic constructions. Analysis reveals that hyperbole is constructed in either positive or negative sentences, metaphors, superlative, and serial adjectival constructions. Those hyperbolic expressions can at least be classified into five categories, i.e. quantity hyperbole, quality hyperbole, distance hyperbole, time hyperbole, space hyperbole, and action hyperbole. These categories seem to closely relate to the scope of human perceptions about everything they find in the world. They will always have associations with number, state, distance, time, space, and actions anyone can perform. This study concludes the intertwined relationship between language and human behaviors.

Abstract

Language attitudes significantly influence language vitality and revitalization, shaping users' language choices. In Indonesia, indigenous languages, including Javanese, are declining in use, particularly among younger generations who prefer Indonesian for daily communication. Family language policies, where parents prioritize Indonesian over indigenous languages, contribute to this trend. This study investigates teenagers’ language attitudes towards Javanese, aiming to inform strategies for preserving the language. Using a mixed-method sociolinguistic approach, the researchers collected data through surveys and interviews, examining factors like cultural identity, social dynamics, educational experiences, and media exposure. The study involves Junior High School students, with 127 survey responses and 42 respondents joining the interviews. The findings reveal that 44.1% of respondents learned Javanese as their mother tongue, while 55.1% acquired Indonesian. Proficiency in Javanese varies: 41.7% can fluently use Javanese Ngoko, but only 4.7% are fluent in Krama. Javanese Ngoko is mainly used within families and local communities, whereas Indonesian dominates in schools and public spaces, influenced by its perceived utility and globalization. Despite challenges, including limited learning resources and fear of misuse, respondents view Javanese positively, driven by cultural pride and ethnic identity. These findings highlight the need for targeted strategies to empower teenagers to preserve and revitalize Javanese. Addressing language attitudes and increasing exposure to Javanese could help reverse its decline.
