Abstract

Hydrocarbons are one of the materials from Chemistry that studies abstract concepts and procedural knowledge such as alkanes, alkenes and alkyas. To study hydrocarbon material, students must master well the concepts related to previous concepts such as the concept of covalent bonding and equalizing reactions. If students do not understand the concepts related to hydrocarbon material, it will be difficult to master the concepts in hydrocarbon material. The learning process at school at this time sometimes also still does not increase student creativity and activity. The application of the Learning Cycle 5E learning model combined with cooperative type TPS (Think Pair Share) and cooperative type STAD can be used as an alternative to developing a more meaningful learning atmosphere in understanding concepts and giving students the opportunity to work together to solve problems. The purpose of this study was to determine: the quality of the learning process using the LC 5E - TPS and LC 5E - STAD models on the topic of hydrocarbons, as well as differences in the cognitive learning outcomes of hydrocarbon students who were taught with these two learning models. This study uses a quasi-experimental design with "Postest Only Group Design". The sample of this study was students of class XI IPA1 and class XI IPA2 of SMAN I Parang in the 2019/2020 school year, each consisting of 21 people. Class XI IPA1 as an experimental class taught with LC 5E - TPS model and class XI IPA2 as an experimental class taught with LC 5E - STAD model. Research data in the form of observations of the quality of the learning process, the results of observations of students 'cooperative abilities and students' post test scores. Research data were analyzed using t test. The results showed that the quality of the learning process by using the LC 5E - TPS model and the LC 5E - STAD model were included in both categories. Students' cooperative skills in both learning models are included in both categories. Cognitive learning outcomes of students in learning with the LC 5E - TPS model are higher than in learning with the LC 5E - STAD model.

Abstract

The present study investigated the correlation between TPACK, Grade and English language learning outcomes of Pre-Service Teachers in West Nusa Tenggara. Furthermore, this study's primary purpose is to identify whether there is a significant correlation between TPACK level and grades and its correlation with ELLO. This study is quantitative with a correlational design. The participants were 214 pre-service EFL teachers, determined using stratified sampling. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 24 to determine the TPACK level's correlation with grades and ELLO. Most Pre-service EFL teachers have moderate TPACK grades, and ELLO was given the respective Mode scores M= 3. Further analysis demonstrates a significant correlation between TPACK, grades, and ELLO. This finding encapsulates that the English Study Program in West Nusa Tenggara has prepared the student teachers' TPACK level properly. Furthermore, the results of this study also suggest that the TPACK levels of the EFL pre-service teachers are significantly correlated with their grades and ELLO.

Abstract

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) evolves to include reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Writing is crucial in higher education for academic report preparation and final project requirements by developing a proper summary. However, there is a lack of research on enhancing summary writing skill in EFL contexts. The Bloom taxonomy model can help to develop students' cognitive analysis. Therefore, this study aims to examine the difference in summary writing skills among EFL students taught using Bloom taxonomy questions. To achieve this aim, a quasi-experimental method was employed by two groups: an experiment group and a control group. The experimental group was taught summary writing strategies using Bloom taxonomy questions, while the control group received a control group. Both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test before and after the treatment. The results showed that the pre-test scores and post-test scores were similar between the experimental and control groups. However, the paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores in the experimental group, indicating a significant increase in results. The study provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of different treatment methods in improving students' summary writing skills. In conclusion, the study shows that Bloom taxonomy questions can significantly enhance students' summary writing skills, as they are more attractive, hierarchical, and cognitively domain-specific than conventional teaching methods. The experimental group achieved higher mean scores. The results suggest that EFL teachers should select appropriate source texts and future research should consider locations and subjects.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study investigates the effectiveness of Nearpod, a student-response-system, on elevating student engagement in Foreign Language for Specific Purposes (FLSP) classes. Utilizing Nearpod's interactive features to deliver the materials and activities through a shareable link, the study aimed to create a dynamic and immersive learning experience. The study involved 74 students from an FLSP course, divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group were taught using Nearpod while the control group received regular instructions. Engagement levels were measured using a self-report questionnaire based on Wang et al. (2016), encompassing four domains of student engagement. The Mann-Whitney U-Test revealed that Nearpod significantly increased overall student engagement (U = 263.500, p < .05). Notably, behavioral, emotional, and social engagement showed significant improvements, while cognitive engagement did not (U = 450.500, p > .05). This empirical results show that Nearpod significantly enhances overall student engagement and positively impacts behavioral, emotional, and social engagement in FLSP integrated classes. However, cognitive engagement remains unaffected, suggesting a need for further exploration of strategies to address this aspect. This research provides valuable insights for language instructors, highlighting the potential of technology to foster engaging and interactive learning environments.

Abstract

As Chinese popularity globally increases, the dynamics of multilingual Chinese classrooms are becoming more apparent in the field of language teaching. Following such trends, this study explores the phenomena of learning Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) through the English as Medium Instruction (EMI) in the context of Indonesian Higher Education. This study intends to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on translanguaging pedagogy and offer decision-makers and educators’ practical approaches for CFL training across a variety of linguistic situations. Through the use of a case study approach, this study investigates how CFL lecturers view and position translanguaging in their classes, as well as how such views are applied as they naturally occur in their CFL classes. Participating in this study are three native Chinese speakers of English who are limited to moderate competency in Indonesian and varied experiences in teaching CFL. The data are gathered through written teaching material examination and interviews. The results of this study show that lecturers are open to translanguaging options and positively perceive it and they use it either as explanatory strategy or managerial strategy in their CFL class.  Even so, all three lecturers are aware that more careful consideration is still required due to its potential drawbacks and challenges.
