Abstract

This study examines the English to Indonesian translation of emotional expressions depicted in Daniel Keyes’s novel “The Minds of Billy Milligan” and its Indonesian translation “24 Wajah Billy.” The primary objectives are to describe the emotional expressions portrayed by the main character and to analyze the methods applied in translating these emotional expressions from English to Indonesian. Employing David Krech’s emotional classification theory and drawing on Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation methods, this qualitative descriptive research identifies 28 emotional classification data in the novel. Eight types of emotion classifications were identified, including 13 instances of fear, 6 instances of anger, 3 instances of hate, 2 instances of happiness, 1 instance of pain, 1 instance of guilt and regret, 1 instance of pride and shame, and 1 instance of love. The translation applies six translation methods used in 39 instances borrowing, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalent, and adaptation. Each emotion is translated using different translation methods. The application of these six methods is divided into three variants: single with 18 instances, couplet with 9 instances, and triplet with 1 instance. The literal method is the most frequently used in translating emotional expression. The translation method aims to preserve the essence of the narrative from the source language to the target language.

Abstract

Publications on gender and spirituality have been prominently featured in many journals indexed by various databases. This article employs bibliometric analysis to investigate publication trends on gender and spiritual issues in literary studies within the Scopus database. This research utilized the VOSviewer application to analyze keyword co-authorship, co-occurrence, and citations. The bibliographic data for this study were downloaded from the Scopus database on January 8, 2024, with a search restriction over the last ten years between 2014 and 2023, and under two fields: 1) social sciences and 2) arts and humanities. The results show that of the 34 eligible publications, there are four main highlights. First, the co-authorship of research publications is relatively low and is only undertaken by a few researchers. Second, the co-occurrence of keywords reveals three main research trends over these ten years: gender-based experiences and practices, gender-based concepts, and religion and spirituality. However, keywords related to literary criticism did not appear. Third, the number of citations for documents is uneven and is dominated only by certain authors, affiliations, and countries. Lastly, network visualization reveals limited interconnectivity between topics, such as gender spirituality and literature. These results conclude that interdisciplinary research in the field of literary criticism remains widely open to address existing research gaps and encourage researchers to collaborate on related topics.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes constructed by society are detrimental for women. Women were seen as weak and underestimated by society (the PEW Research Center’s survey in 2017). This study aims to discover how a film entitled Thor: Ragnarok (2017) countered gender stereotypes through the portrayal of the main female character, Hela, and to reveal the reason behind such portrayal of Hela. This study is a qualitative study because the data are qualitative data. The data of this study are clauses collected from the movie subtitles, containing Hela’s power to counter gender stereotypes. This study applied Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (three-dimensional framework), supported by Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which focused on the transitivity system for the first-dimension analysis. After doing the three-dimensional analysis, it is found that Hela’s character in the movie is portrayed as opposing gender stereotypes. Hela is represented as strong, brave, and feared. These traits are against the stereotype of women described as weak, fearful, and underestimated. The reason behind the portrayal of Hela as a strong woman is to promote the feminism spirit to the people in that women should be empowered, in line with the goal of the United Nations (UN) Women and the UN Foundation that protect women's rights and supports women in achieving gender equality.

Abstract

The discourses of Monkeypox relating to linguistics segments may contain a person's emotional tone and authenticity discourse from psychology. This article presents a psycholinguistic analysis of the discourse used by world governments during the monkeypox outbreak. It examines the emotional tone and authenticity of the language used by government officials in their discourses to the public. Therefore, this study used psycholinguistics analysis which adopt the Linguistics Inquiry Word Counts (LIWC) program to compute the text into a word count numbers with the average number of emotional tone and authenticity. The findings showed that emotional tone and authenticity of the discourse can have a significant impact on how the audience receives and interprets the message. Accordingly, the use of authentic communication strategies can enhance public trust and confidence in the government's ability to manage a crisis. It brings the implication that government officials should use language features that reflect a high level of authenticity, such as first-person pronouns and negative adjectives, to establish trust and confidence in their leadership during a public health crisis.

Abstract

The psychological problems that happen in society are growing day by day. Trauma is a common thing that can happen to somebody, and with trauma, there are also ways to handle it called defense mechanisms. From the defense mechanism, a pathological personality emerges. A person who has a pathological personality will use a defense mechanism to protect his psychological state. The connection between trauma, defense mechanisms, and pathological personality traits has become a prevalent topic of discussion. This scenario can also be found in the Lord of the Mysteries web novel where Klein Moretti as the main character experienced psychological issue in the new world. The qualitative descriptive method was used to objectively analyze the material, targeting the trauma from the main character, his defense mechanism to overcome it, and the pathological personality that emerged based on his trauma. Thus, the research aims to investigate the connection between Klein’s trauma and his pathological personality and to elaborate on what kind of defense mechanism Klein employs to overcome his trauma. Using the phenomenology approach, the researcher can collect the data based on the phenomena that happen to the main character. The researcher also does close reading while using Freudian psychoanalysis in defense mechanisms. The researcher found that trauma can create a defense mechanism due to the fact that the main character needs something to defend himself from the stress and anxiety caused by the trauma. From that trauma, pathological personality was also used by the main character to employ the defense mechanism. The researcher concludes that Klein’s defense mechanism and pathological personality are the result of his trauma.

Abstract

The societal phenomenon of taboo terms is commonly expressed in song lyrics. This research focuses on the function of taboo expressions in the song lyrics of Nicki Minaj, a singer who is known to use such expressions. The first objective of this analysis is to determine the types of taboo expressions found in Minaj’s songs. Secondly, the researchers examine the function of these expressions in the song lyrics. Four of Minaj's songs are presented in the data: "Superbass," "Megatron," "Barbie Tingz," and "Anaconda." This research employs descriptive and qualitative analysis, as well as the theoretical frameworks provided by Battistella (2005) and Wardhaugh (2021). The findings demonstrate that vulgarity is the most frequent form of taboo expression in Minaj's song lyrics, while the main function of these phrases is to attract attention. These songs indicate more than simply linguistic qualities; they also offer a thorough understanding of the social setting. This study fills a gap in the literature on taboo expressions in song lyrics by revealing the function and types of taboo expressions employed by a well-known singer. This research has the capacity to enlighten future research on the usage of taboo expressions in music, and the broader cultural consequences of such language implication.

Abstract

The study of pronoun translation in subtitle is crucial to give insight for subtitler for maintaining the producing accurate, respectful, and culturally sensitive translations, ensuring effective communication across different languages and cultures. This research aims to identify pronoun translation in the Indonesian-English movie subtitle of Sang Pemimpi (The Dreamer) movie. This study was designed as qualitative research, with content analysis as a method of collecting the data. The analysis focused on how the pronoun in the subtitle translated from SL to TL, what are the cultural reasons of using pronoun and what are strategies used by the translator with considering grammatical and socio-cultural aspects in both the Source Language (SL) and Target Language (TL). The findings reveal three categories of pronoun translation occur in subtitle, they are pronoun to pronoun, pronoun to reference, and pronoun to omission. A total of 680 pronouns were translated, with 521 (77%) translated as pronoun to pronoun, 152 (22%) as a pronoun to omission, and 7 (1%) as a pronoun to reference. These results underscore the diverse background factors influencing why pronouns are translated, including socio-cultural and grammatical considerations. There are several subtiling strategies used by translators to translate the sentences, including genralization, direct translation, explicitation, and subtiution. These strategiess are employed to ensure fidelity to the original meaning while adapting to linguistic and cultural nuances in the target language.

Abstract

This article applies semiotics as a theoretical framework to uncover the observable layers of meaning that are interwoven in Rihanna’s song “Diamonds”. By examining the linguistic, visual, and musical elements of this song, this scholarly discourse aims to unearth the symbolic significance of “Diamonds” and their implications for contemporary popular music. Over and above this, it is to underscore that there is an intricate relationship between linguistics and musicology, hence the necessity to form an interdisciplinary dialogue. Ultimately, three notable findings are evident. First, the semiotic examination of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” reveals that the recurring motif of diamonds symbolizes more than just material wealth. Rather, diamonds serve as powerful metaphorical expressions of fortitude, strength, and enduring love. Second, through semiotic exposition, the use of light imagery, among others, conveys themes of conviction, optimism, and clarity. By the same token, references to shining bright like diamonds evoke notions of enlightenment and transcendence, sharply contrasting with the darker elements explored in the song’s lyrics. Third, this scholarly evaluation unmasks the synergistic relationship between linguistic and non-linguistic elements in “Diamonds”. Conclusively, the combination of words and music solidifies the overall message and emotional resonance of the song, creating a more immersive and impactful experience for the listener.

Abstract

Climate change is a global phenomenon and has become a challenge to world society. According to that, this study examines linguistics strategies used in the erasure of climate change discourse through ecolinguistics lenses. This study used a specialized corpus that was built through 224 articles from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) website, which was collected with the keywords perubahan iklim ‘climate change’, krisis iklim ‘climate crisis’, and ketahanan iklim ‘climate resilience’. The data was analyzed using Sketch Engine using keywords, concordance, and collocations features. Then, the analysis of data was conducted manually through semantic categorization. This paper used Stibbe’s the void and the mask framework for its analysis. The major themes found in this paper are the government and its activities as a part of international organizations. This paper also found that KLHK used several linguistics strategies to demonstrate climate change, including abstract terms and nominalization to obscure the social actors. Also, the theme of nature, such as non-human species are completely erased from the discourse. These results show that climate change discourse on KLHK’s website is contrary to the ecosophy of ecolinguistics that encourages highlighting the importance of non-human species in such discourse. It is clear that KLHK takes non-human species for granted in their climate change discourse compared to human activity in their discourse.

Abstract

The relationship between Germany and Asia is characterized by its complexity and uniqueness. Unlike other European nations, Germany established close connections with Asia by drawing inspiration from its rich cultural heritage. Germany’s historical background, being overpowered and defeated by France at the beginning of its formation to nationhood, led German thinkers and philosophers to seek sources of national self-identity other than those imbued with antiquity and Western culture. Germany's perception of itself about the East (as well as other regions) can be understood through the lens of German colonial fantasies, which depict Germany as a benevolent colonizer capable of establishing harmonious colonies. This concept of colonial fantasy is dynamic and evolves in line with German historical stages. In this study, we will examine Rudolf Utsch's three-part series of German adolescent adventure texts set in Indonesia by employing a textual analysis approach and focusing on the concept of colonial fantasy by Susanne Zantop. The research outcomes suggest that both German characters were depicted as benevolent colonizers, yet their efforts to establish a harmonious colony proved unsuccessful. Several biases stemming from colonial fantasies are discovered, including gender bias, the marginalization of local characters, and an imbalance in the portrayal of space and location.
