Abstract

Main purpose of politics is common participation for a common good, which allows the people to live well and fully in a society. Although Catholic Church may not confused religion and politics, she cannot ignore socio-political affairs. Thus, she is called to be witness of Christ who preached the Kingdom of God. Christian faith encourages the Church to have a certain attitude towards socio-political conditions in our society. To create a common good is indeed a vocation for all the faithful. This article aims to inquire the presence and role of laity as local leaders, as part of the Church's involvement in the political sphere, based on the observation in Banjarsari Village. Using a qualitative approach, this article aims to see the link between the involvement of the laity in politics with the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding politics. The results show that the values of churchs teaching have been greatly lived in their participation in a society. Faith helps them to build awareness of their social and political responsibility.

Abstract

The boat burning festival is held in Bagansiapiapi, Rokan Hilir district, Riau province. It is the most popular ritual in this city. Many people from Indonesia and other countries come to this city, to celebrate the ritual and enjoy the event. Actually, this ritual is held more than one month. It begin with the ritual to ask to the God of the Sea to know what the Gods will. After that, the ritual continues with boat building. Thus, the ritual continues at the 15th, 16th and 17th day of the 5th month in Lunar calendar. On the 17th of the 5th month the boat will be paraded and in the place that have been prepared they burn the boat. This ritual is the annual event. The most interesting thing of this ritual is that the ritual is interpreted as a symbol. From the soteriological point of view, this is the symbol of God salvation. They order to God to give the salvation, especially salvation in this world: fortune, harmony, and peacefulness. In addition, in this ritual, they also aware with their sins. Sins can undo their salvation. Therefore, in this ritual they invoke mercy from God and thus God give to them salvation. This research was qualitative research using interview method. The research sample consisted of nine respondents selected by some requirements. These requirements were understanding the ritual, staying in Bagansiapiapi or having an experience to live there, and being involved in the ritual. The data research was obtained through interview. The additional data obtained through library studies, which was conducted through observation using CD and literature reviews.

Abstract

Religious life is directly related to cultural life. This is observable among Sundanese Catholics in Cigugur. In religious life, the respective Sundanese culture strongly marked its influence. The way one lives his or her religiosity also reflects their culture. It is common that religious people live together with other people of different religious belief and practices. In this context culture helps them to be able to live harmoniously with people from different religions. This article focuses on the history of the Catholic community in Cigugur, Kuningan while inquiring the role of the Sundanese culture in their daily life within their Catholic community.

Abstract

Concerns that arise currently are the development of a culture of hatred, the fading of a culture of love, secularism and social injustice. In the midst of that situation, the Church stands as a concrete manifestation of the face of God's love in the middle of the world. In the Ecclesia de Eucharistia encyclical, John Paul II asserted that the eschatological character emphasize the Christian commitment to the world, especially establish the social life order (cf. EE 20). The Eucharistic dimension of the Eucharist implies that the world order must be transformed as a form of participation towards fulfillment at the end of time. Whereas in the Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis, Benedict XVI, asserted that the Eucharist celebration brings our whole lives into spiritual worship that pleases to God (cf SCar 70). From this research, it is known that the Eucharistic social dimension becomes a spirit of love culture according to the writer. This love culture finds its source and power in the Eucharist. Through the celebration of the Eucharist, people are mystically united with Christ. In the light of the theology of the Eucharistic social dimension of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, mystical union with Christ refers to the oneness of God's thankfulness to the fulfillment of the last days (cf. John 15:13).

Abstract

Nurses often express a variety of reasons that make them less or even no attention to spiritual issues of patients but the nurses believe that human beings as bio-psycho-socio-cultural and spiritual creatures as a whole respond to the changes occuring. Nursing care provided by nurses can not be separated from the spiritual aspect as an integral part of the nurse's interaction with clients. Nurses through the nursing process should help patients to accept the pain and to find meaning and significance of their suffering. Only a relationship with God, making life and relationships among others become more meaningful in facing the failure, suffering and death. Spiritual care for patients becomes a reflection of the nurses if they are spiritually healthy or not. Nurses will not be able to carry on the spiritual needs of patients when he himself have a spiritual problem.

Abstract

The local Church of the Archdiocese of Semarang (KAS) grows and develops in the Javanese culture. Before their conversion to Catholicism, many local Catholics held Kebatinan, a Javanese religious tradition, as their religion. Even after their conversion, some of them continue to practice some forms of the Javanese mysticism. In order to give a space for Catholics who are practicing such a mysticism, a forum called "Temu Kebatinan" which discusses themes of Javano-Catholicism was established. However, Javano-Catholics find themselves caught in the middle between living a more puritanical (Western) Catholicism and a more accommodative stance toward the Javanese culture. They find things that stand in harmony with their Catholic faith, but they also consider some of these practices as inappropriate, even syncretic. This article examines how the followers of "Kebatinan" interpret and navigate these tensions, especially to understand the special role of Jesus Christ.

Abstract

The future of a nation and a church is on the shoulder of its youth. Education bears a significant role in guiding and empowering the youth. Education provides means as well as medium for character and values building. Amidst an aggressive society, how can a Catholic school offer an education to counter particularly through an internalization of Christian values? How can their students learn and internalize those values.This research is aimed at revealing and measuring the teenagers understanding of Christian values as taught in a Catholic school and also on the role of Javanese cultural values in life of the teenagers with aggressive behavior. This research is an attempt to explain phenomena of the increasing aggressive behavior among teenagers in mass media despite the existing educational accompaniment. Second Vatican Council emphasized the importance of education in the Church as a medium for human development and character development (GE 1). In the same article, it is stated that children and young people posses primary rights to be supported and enable them to appreciate a sincere conscience as well as moral values so as to understand and to love God in a more perfect way. The Council also accentuated specifically that education is duty of the Church, as a medium to spread the Good News towards fellow people (GE 3).Result of the research concludes that understanding of Christian and cultural values help significantly to reduce teenagers aggressive behavior. On the other hand, what should not be undermined is the influence television, the internet as well as the changing role of parents.Based on findings of this research, the writer should deepen the vision and mission of a Catholic education by his theological and pastoral reflection particularly by reviewing the history of educational ministry of FIC Congregation which has been established since 1840. The writer concludes that educational ministry should remain as primary mission of the evangelizing Church.

Abstract

Israeli Palestinian conflict which is one of the hot issues in our present world, is a particular problem that has both political and religious dimensions. This problem often compels Christians to think about their stand in dealing with the State of Israel. In order to take a proper position, one has to understand the relationship between Biblical Israel and the modern State of Israel. It has to be realized, however, that how one defines the relationship between these two entities depends actually on the interpretive methods that are chosen and applied upon the biblical texts. And because there are many methods of interpreting the biblical texts, it is almost impossible to attain any definitive idea that would be acceptable to all. Abstract

Sejak Konsili Vatikan II, pemahaman misi di dalam Gereja Katolik mengalami perubahan. Sebelum Konsili, tujuan misi dipahami sebagai perluasan teritorial Gereja. Atau dengan kata lain, penyebarluasan Kekristenan. Namun sejak Konsili, misi dipahami sebagai evangelisasi orang-orang di dalam situasi hidupnya yang partikular dan historis. Pengertian evangelisasi tidak hanya menunjuk pada proses penyebarluasan ajaran. Situasi masa kini menunjukkan bahwa ada banyak umat Kristen yang tinggal di daerah-daerah yang tidak lagi dipandang sebagai daerah misi (contohnya: Indonesia). Maka istilah "evangelisasi" banyak dikembangkan, terutama oleh St. Yohanes Paulus II dan Paus emeritus Benediktus XVI. Apalagi, ajaran Paus Fransiskus semakin memperkaya makna evangelisasi. Dalam tulisan ini, penulis berusaha mengeksplorasi gagasan-gagasan dari Konsili Vatikan II untuk menelusuri makna misi. Penulis sampai kepada kesimpulan bahwa perubahan fokus upaya misi ini mempunyai dasarnya pada pengalaman Paskah dan peran Roh Kudus.
