Abstract

The javanese mysticism (Kejawen) reflects a kind of messianic idea of a just king(Ratu Adil)that can be compared to the notion of "God's reign" in Christianity. The concept of "Ratu Adil" had inevitably influenced javanese customs, language system as well as various ritual traditions. Considering that the Kejawen itself is a mixture of various elements from different religious systems (such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam), it is neccessary to trace back sources or traditions, from which the notion of Ratu Adil had been developed. This article aims to discuss and to compare the understanding of "Ratu Adil" with the notion of "God's reign".

Abstract

The Church as the mystical body of Christ is called to sanctification (LG 42). The Churchs challenge to live up to the vocation of sanctification faces the challenge of antrophocentrism in modern times. The dissemination of antrophocentrism in modern times have shaped the emergence of new concepts, namely rationalism, individualism, and secularism, making humans to be apathetic and leading to a superficial spiritual life. The severity of the challenges experienced by the Church in modern times demands militancy of the spiritual life that is rooted in the Eucharist. This article aims to discuss the Eucharist as the root of all forms of the Church sanctification in the world as viewed by Raniero Cantalamessa and Pope Benedict XVI. Both Cantalmessa and Pope Benedict XVI show that the sanctification within the Church is rooted in the Eucharist. Through Eucharist as the real encounter, The Church is transformed by the divine power of Christ which revives, moves, supports, and strengthens the pilgrimage of Church in this world. The writer approaches this problem by scrutinizing the viewpoints by Raniero Cantalamessa and Pope Benedict XVI by carrying out the critical history method and library research. Then, the writer synthesizes the two viewpoints on the Eucharist as the root of sanctification. This writing is expected to be a viewpoint contribution to spiritual life of all Christians in living the call to the sanctification.

Abstract

The spreadof the Churchin differentparts of the worldled toareal challenge, namelyhow to develop a Church thattrulyrootedin the local culture. This challenge is alsofaced by the Diocese of Purwokerto. One ofthe most influentialfigures who made the Diocese of Purwokerto incorporated in the local culture isMonseigneur W.Schoemaker. Thus, understanding his life as amissionary priest in Purwokerto and his pastoral services as the Apostolic Vicar of Purwokerto and then as the first bishop in the Diocese of Purwokerto is very important. This research focuses on exploring three points: 1) life history of W.Schoemaker before his ordination as a missionary priest;2) his concern in serving ruralpeople as a missionary priest; 3) and his policy as a bishop of the Diocese of Purwokerto in developing the Diocese of Purwokertos identity as a local Church.

Abstract

The social operating system of the networked individualism invites the Church to reflect on the notion of communion of the networked Church. Through textual analysis from selected resources it is found that relationality aspect was celebrated and nurtured in the term of the networked individualism and the Church communion. Trinity which is relational being and human Christian anthropology which is relational embedded in networked individualism context. Networked Church provides theological arguments that the networked individualism develops the meaning of communion in the Church which is a new paradox of a back and forth online-offline relation.

Abstract

On December 10, 2014, a national seminar discussing the theme "Philosophy of Divinity: Rethinking Theology in the Context of Scientific Discourse, Higher Education and Society" took place in Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. At the seminar, the author presented his ideas regarding the mention of theology as "philosophy of divinity". The author argues that theology that we know as the systematic reflection on faith can be referred as "philosophy of divinity". By tracing the development of theology in history, the author find that the term "divinity" (indonesian translation for keilahian) designates the content of what is now understood as theology. The mention of theology as philosophy of divinity does not eliminate its meaning, let alone the essence. In history of its development, theology always interacted with philosophy. After accountable argument with the historical perspective, the author draws some practical implications of "changing" theology into philosophy of divinity. This article is a further development of the ideas the author presented in the seminar.

Abstract

I used the term deconstruction instead of reconstruction as used by Harvey Cox for commenting the same book to appreciate the impressive way of how Albert Nolan writes about Jesus. He explains Jesus very differently compared with other writings on Jesus. He focuses especially on Historical Jesus and deliberately chooses the title for his book Jesus Before Christianity, published in 1976. He has an intention to present Jesus objectively as a man who lived in the first century in Palestine and he said that his book can be read with or without faith. In spite of the impossibility of such undertaking due to the fact that everything we know about Jesus is taken from the Gospel we should appreciate Nolans efforts to try such elaboration on christology from below. Nolan also writes a second book on Jesus entitled Jesus Today, A Spirituality of Radical Freedom in 2006.I am of the opinion that Nolans books on Jesus are very helpful and inspiring for the education of our candidates for priesthood in major Seminary. They offer a different perspective of Christology that will influence the way of thinking of our future priests. They have to know Jesus objectively about what Jesus was saying and doing; They have to learn to know what Jesus wants us to do. To have such knowledge and skill, they have to learn form Jesus himself and I believe Nolan has something to be contributed for that purpose.

Abstract

Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni, which is located in Sakura III Street Medan-North Sumatera, actually is a Catholic-church with Hindu-Moghul architecture. Many people visit this shrine because of its uniqueness, the ornaments and symbols, and the service of Fr. James Bharataputra, SJ. This building becomes a precious asset for the Archdiocese of Medan. The aim of this article is to prove the effectiveness of Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni for inculturated evangelization. How can the idea of the founder be understood by the visitors? How can evangelization, inculturation, and devotion be developed in the Archdiocese of Medan? These questions will be answered by a field-research. We use mixed method: qualitative and quantitative namely with depth interviews and questioner. In the light of Evangelii Gaudium, we would support, criticize, and suggest pastoral movements to develop Maria Shrine of Annai Velangkanni. The inculturation can be found in this shrine and become an effective evangelization. The management should be a system which involves many parts to give a better service and increase the inculturation with local cultures (Batak).

Abstract

Christian peoples in megapolitan Jakarta are ordinary citizens like others. They have similar problems for instance unemployment, corruption and transparency, environmental degradation, transportation and traffic jam, etc. City offers pleasure and luxury too, that can alienate one from oneself. Before these chalenges, citizens need a model, one who can be inspiring. For Christians, Jesus Christ is Lord, as well as a model that can be imitated. But in a megapolitan context, who can it be a real figure of inspiration? In this case, Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok is an extraordinary local leader, and can be considered as a role model. His goverment is clean and strongly anti-corruption, transparent; his government is obviously administrating social justice. Character of a local leader that reflects the values of the Good News of Jesus Christ is indeed inspiring and can be followed as well imitated.

Abstract

Barrenness is a serious problem for couples in a culture that emphasizes the importance of generating descendants such as one of the time of the Judeo-Christian Scripture. This writing offers a theological reflection that comes from the Old Testament. Children is Gods grace for the family. Nevertheless, having no children should no longer be seen solely as a burden for a couple but rather as part of the mystery of God's grace for their lives as family. God may use barrenness to increase faith in God. God may direct barren married couple to use their time and freedom to serve Him. Still, God may use barrenness as an opportunity for adoption. Finally, God may use barrenness as a witness to those who have children to cherish them as God's grace.
