Abstract

At the time of the Council, almost everyone recognized that the churchs MISIonary activity was facing an identity crisis. New attitudes were raising new questions. Fifty years afterwards the Church cannot pretend of having been able to overcome them. The letters of Pope Benedict XVI showed that new questions seem never end. Demographical shift of Christianity, the spread of violence, individualism, secular culture are only some indications of the new realities which the Catholic Church has to address. In those uneasy situations, the Pope reminds the faithful not to lose hope. He encourage them to build a new culture, that is, solidarit ; and invite all people around the globe to create a peaceful atmosphere and to make the world as a home for everyone.

Abstract

Post-colonial studies present a critique that the Church cannot exist merely as an archaic relic of colonialism. To transform this poignant stereotype, the Church should engage an inculturation. As a man of the Church, Karl-Edmund Prier has been involved in the Churchs inculturation projects by placing himself in the middle of the tension between faith and culture. His major contribution is the inculturated liturgical music to enrich the local Churchs creedal expression. He initiated an inculturation process, representing the willingness of the universal to enter into the local, an effort done with humility and kenosis. Through his method, Prier endeavored to discover liturgical songs that were harmonious with the sitz im leben, local sense, and the cultural imagination of the national Indonesian government. His monumental work is Madah Bakti considered as a mimicry of Gotteslob. As a liturgical musical book of the Indonesian Church, it represents a mixture of western and Indonesian ethnic songs. The aim is to allow the faithful to experience the local Church collaborates with the universal Church. Prier conducts simultaneously two acts, holding the global locally and promoting the local globally.

Abstract

The local Church of the Archdiocese of Semarang (KAS) grows and develops in the Javanese culture. Before their conversion to Catholicism, many local Catholics held Kebatinan, a Javanese religious tradition, as their religion. Even after their conversion, some of them continue to practice some forms of the Javanese mysticism. In order to give a space for Catholics who are practicing such a mysticism, a forum called "Temu Kebatinan" which discusses themes of Javano-Catholicism was established. However, Javano-Catholics find themselves caught in the middle between living a more puritanical (Western) Catholicism and a more accommodative stance toward the Javanese culture. They find things that stand in harmony with their Catholic faith, but they also consider some of these practices as inappropriate, even syncretic. This article examines how the followers of "Kebatinan" interpret and navigate these tensions, especially to understand the special role of Jesus Christ.

Abstract

Abstract

The Catholic Church in Asia has declared triple-dialogue (dialogue with the Asian cultures, with religions and with the poor) as its way of being Church. The farmers belong to the poor in most of Asian countries, especially in Indonesia. This article tries to trace back the history of the Asian Churchs concern with the farmers, which are the representation of the poor. This concern has inevitably touched socio-cultural and socio-political dimensions of christian faith, which lead the christian communities to the most concrete social problem of the local communities, and at the same time connect them with global issues like hunger and food industrialization, or ecological crisis and sustainable farming.

Abstract

InLaudato Si(2015), Pope Francis offers a contextual theological reflection on humanitys relationship with the planet. Widely considered as a theological discourse par excellence, the papal encyclical combines theological reflections with studies from various scientific disciplines. The result is a theology that is both contextual and relevant to the challenges of the present world. Against this backdrop, this article argues that the development of a theology of migration in recent decades presents an attempt to conduct theological inquiries in a manner consonant to Pope Francis theological method. This is due to the method used in migration theology. It begins by reflecting upon concrete phenomena and encounters (interculturality). Subsequently, it considers multidisciplinary scientific analyses. Finally, it offers practical consequences for both moral and pastoral decisions. This article aims to describe the approaches taken by contemporary theologians in their attempts to develop a multidisciplinary and intercultural migration theology. Moreover,it seeks to show that migration theology can be an importantlocusfor a public theology, as it is able to enter into the realm of discourse and dialogue with the wider public for the sake of the common good.

Abstract

According to the second Vatican Council, the relationship between the Church and the world is that of two patterns in the Christian life itself, namely the relationship between her life as a part of the world and that of the Church. The relationship between the believers and the common life in the state is related to moral and social responsibility. The social activities of the Church is involvement, namely, participating in social struggles in order to accomplish human life and faith. It is to develop bonum commune. The placement of defense against human at the center of Catholic ecclesiology moves social involvement from the periphery to the center of life and the work of the Church. The second Vatican Council strengthens the local Church as social actors. The Indonesian bishops declare that Catholics in Indonesia is an integral part of the Indonesian nation in creating bonum commune.

Abstract

The book of Job presents us with a shocking story of a righteous man. He does everything what the Law says. Yet, he suffers. He looks for the answer of his suffering and finds nothing satisfactory. Uniquely, in chapter 7, the protagonist laments. The form of his lamentation somehow reminds its readers a poem similar to Psalm 8. However, there is a big contrast. Psalm 8 is a joyful hymn. Psalm 8 expresses mans confidence in Gods faithful love. Yet, Job 7 contains a distress of man who experiences God as a cruel watchman. He feels that his life is completely under Gods surveillance that makes him suffocated. Based on its literary genre, Job 7 is considered as a parody. Parody works by adapting a previously popular literary work into a new one, but with different intentions. In this paper, the intention of Jobs author is going to be examined. Through the short analysis of its literary form, what can be found is that the author of Job 7 purposefully conveys a sharp criticism to the general notion of the Wisdom Tradition of that era. The Wisdom Tradition emphasizes much on the faith in God based on the relation between punishment and reward. This emphasis has reduced the complexity of human suffering.
