Abstract

                                           ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Analisis Reinkarnasi dalam Film A Dog’s Purpose yang Disutradarai oleh Lasse Hallstrom”. It is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this research is about the reincarnation delineated and the impact of reincarnation towards the character in the Film A Dog’s Purpose. This research includes the concept of reincarnation, film analysis, and character analysis. The writer used two theories, such as the theory of film analysis by Klarer in his book “An Introduction to Literary Studies” (2005) and the theory of character analysis written by Stanton in his book “Introduction to Fiction” (1965) to identify, describe and analyze the data. The result of this research shows that there are four reincarnations that occurred in this film, such as first reincarnation, second reincarnation, third reincarnation, and forth reincarnation. Each reincarnations has several unique impacts of reincarnation towards other characters in the film.Keywords: Reincarnation, Character, Film, A Dog’s Purpose, Dog, Impact

Abstract

                                            ABSTRACT The title of this research is“Morphophonemic Process of Verbs in English and Siau Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify, analyze and describe the kinds of morphophonemic processes and finding out the similarities and the differences of morphophonemic processes in English and Siau language by using of Jensen‟s (1990) and Lado‟s (1957) theories. The English data were collected from several English textbooks, such as Morphology: Word Structure in Generative Grammar (1990) by Jensen, Morphology : The Descriptive Analysis of Word by Nida (1949) and the data of Siau language were collected from books such as Morfologi Bahasa Sangir by George Bawole (1981), Habare Mapia Ko Pia Gambare by Pat Alexander (2008) and six native speakers at the age 40-71 years old in Siau. The results of this research shows that morphophonemic process are divided into ten kinds such as assimilation, dissimilation, insertion, deletion, haplology, metathesis, vocal harmony, vocal reduction, tone rules and morpheme sequence rules. Morphophonemic of verbs in English are divided into eight kinds such as assimilation, disimilations, insertion, deletion, haplology, metatesis, vocal reduction and morpheme sequence rules whereas the types of morphophonemic processes of verbs in Siau language divided into seven kinds such as assimilation, disimilations, insertion, deletion, haplology and vocal reduction and vocal harmony. The pronunciation of the morphophonemic process in both languages consists of prefixes and suffixes. The similarities that found in both languages are assimilation, disimilations, insertion, deletion and haplology, while tone rules are not found in both languages. The difference that exists in that both language are in English metathesis and morpheme sequence rules is found in English while in Siau language is not found. The reduction in English vocals occurs only as a result of the basic morpheme meeting with the affixation, whereas in Siau language occurs because of a basic morpheme meeting with prefixes and confixes.Keywords: Morphophonemic Process, English and Sangir Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

                                          ABSTRACTThis study which is entitled “Figurative Language in Emily Dickinson Poems” focusing on the use of a figurative languiage and categorize it accordance with the types and describe the meaning of figurative language itself. The writer choose five poems which have interesting titles and famous works of Emily Dickinson and using intrinsic approach to gain an understanding of the meaning of figurative language in each poem.The data were collected from Emily Dickinson’s poems and focused on the figurative language. The data which have been identified, collected and classified are analyzed descriptively by using intrinsic approach. This study uses the theory of Perrine in his book “Literature, Structure, Sound and Sense”. According to Perrine, figurative language is away to express something beyond the usual way. In his book also describes the types of figurative language such as personification, metaphor, simile, symbol, synecdoche, metonymy, and hyperbole. The result of this study can be summarized as follows : first, in the poems of Emily Dickinson there are three types of figurative language, including : personification, simile, hyperbole. The personification and simile types dominate every poem of Emily Dickinson. Second, the meaning of figurative language used by Emily Dickinson in her poems in general described Emily Dickinson life experience.Keywords : Poems, Figurative Language, Emily Dickinson.

Abstract

                                                ABSTRACT This research is an attempt to describe and analyze the kinship terms in English and Talaud Language. The problems of this research namely “what are the kinship terms in English and Talaud language and what are the similarities and differences of both languages.” The method which used in this research is descriptive method. The theory which used in this research are Burling’s and Lounsburry’s theories to analyze the kinship terms, and Lado’s theory to contrast both languages. The English data were taken from sociolinguistic books especially about kinship terms, internet and previous thesis about kinship terms that have been done before, whereas the data about the kinship terms in Talaud language were collected from the informants. Data were taken by interviewing the informants who know well about Talaud language and can speak Talaud language fluently. The result of this research shows that the kinship terms in both languages are divided into consanguineal and afinal terms which are differentiated between sex, level of generation, lineage and age. Similarities in terms of sex namely, ‘father’ in English and ‘iaman’ in Talaud language and the similarities of generation for example in English ‘brother’ and ‘turran esa’ in Talaud language. Sex in English and Talaud language is very important things to know because there are some variety of different terms to express differences in the sex of the relatives concerned. Lineage in English and Talaud language refers to the collateral only because the relatives are from the same ancestor but do not from one direct descendent. The difference between two languages is that the principle of age is not too important thing in English, but it is very important in Talaud Language to distinguish the older and the younger. Kinship term in English is not only refers to one relative but also to greet a priest and pastor, but in Talaud language it is not. Kinship term in English has four generations above and below ego, while in Talaud language has three generations above and below ego. Abstract

                                            ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Compliments in English and Mongondow Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and to contrast the topics and responses of compliments in English and Mongondow languages. This research uses a descriptive method. The data of compliments in English were collected from films entitled Forever my Girl (2018) and A Star is Born (2018), while the data of compliments in Mongondow language were collected from observation of conversations among people who live in Kopandakan II and can speak Mongondow language well. The writer uses the theory of Wolfson in Richards and Shcmidt (1986) to identifi, classifi, and describe the data about the topics of compliment and the responses of compliment of both languages. The writer uses Lado’s theory (1957) to make a contrastive analis of both languages in finding out the similarities and differences of compliments and its responses in English and Mongondow language. This result shows that the topics of compliment in Mongondow language are personal attribute, possession, children, pet, accomplishment, and change in appearance, while in English Language are personal attribute, possession, children, pet, accomplishment, and change in appearance. The responses of compliment in Mongondow language are acceptance, agreement, rejection, shift, and return and the responses of compliment in English Language are acceptance, agreement, rejection, shift, and return. The similarities of the topics of compliment in Mongondow language and English language which are found namely personal attribute, possession, children, pet, accomplishment, and change in appearance, and the compliment responses in Mongondow language and English language namely acceptance, agreement, rejection, shift, and return. The differences of both languages namely the topics of compliment in Mongondow language is found about plants while in English language isn’t, while the responses of compliment in Mongondow language has shy while smilling, and laugh while in English language. The adjectival words which are used in English Language namely beautiful, proud, the best, ravishing, great, excited, cute, good, lucky, soft, kind, nice, amazing, very good, well, smells good, perfect, and awesome while in Mongondow language namely mo’ jago, mo’ lawak, mo’ sopan, mo’ bagu, mo’ pandoi, totok mo’ rajing, aidon no lunat, no’ lebeh pasung, no lebeh lantut, and ontongon mo’ muda. The verbal words used in Compliments namely like and love, and in Mongondow language mo’ ibog. The adjectival used frequently in English Language are beautiful, good, and great while in Mongondow language namely no’ lebeh pasung and mo’ bagu.Keywords: Compliment, English and Mongondow Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACT This research entitled “improving students speaking skill through imitation technique” is implemented in SMA Negeri 1 Beo. It is attempted to apply the imitation technique in English (language). This research is expected for student acquirement the language by copying the utterance through imitation model. Theoretically imitation technique is used to copying the utterance without observing the grammatical rule. The learner acquires the language as a child learns a language. The imitation technique makes the learner knows not only what they say but also how to say it. However, the technique is more enjoyable to it push the learner to copy the utterance from the model. In this study the writer applied four types of imitation: observing, remembering, reproducing and reinforcing or motivational. The research uses classroom action research. The result of this research shows that imitation technique can improve students’ speaking skill through classroom activity research. All students have more than 50% improvement. Keywords: imitation technique, speaking skill and classroom action research.

Abstract

                                             ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Ambisi dalam Novel A Stranger In The Mirror Karya Sidney Sheldon” as a requirement to accomplish undergraduate at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. The study aims to determine two main characters names Toby Temple and Jill Castle, on their ambition to achieve a dream to become superstar in Hollywood. This study used psychologycal approach by Alfred Adler theory as the main theory to identify the ambition in the novel. The writer also used Robert Stanton theory to anylized the characters. The method used in this research is descriptive by using intrinsic and extrinsic approach to identify, describe and analyze the ambition in the novel A Stranger in the Mirror. The result shows that Toby and Jill are characters who have a strong determination, they strive to get their dreams. their ambition arises because of impulse factors from within themselves and the environment. Abstract

                                               ABSTRACTThis Skripsi entitled “Anxiety in the Novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher” is intended to be one of the requirements to accomplish the “Sarjana” at the Faculty of Humanities Manado. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the kind of „anxiety‟ and the effect of „anxiety‟ to the characters in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The characterization of the characters, include the identification of „anxiety‟ are described. In terms of methodology, the combination of two approaches applied namely the intrinsic as well as the extrinsic ones. The concept of „anxiety‟ and its categories include the characters, are two concepts representing the extrinsic and the extrinsic ones. The psychological theory about anxiety by Freud in Minderop (2010) and supported theory by Davison, Neale and Kring (2012) and also paradigm by Roberts (1983) are used to be completed by a descriptive analysis. The results of this research show that the characters Clay Jensen, Hannah Baker and Mr. Potter tend to have anxiety. Clay Jensen categorized as objective anxiety and classified in phobia disorder, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, Hannah Baker has objective anxiety and classified in panic disorder and post traumatic disorder, and Mr. Porter has objective anxiety. The effects are recklessness of the character Clay Jensen and depression of the character Hannah Baker and Mr. Porter. The depression of the character Hannah Baker causes the death as suicidal of the major characters Hannah Baker.Keywords: Literature, Anxiety, Psychologycal Analysis, Thirteen Reasons Why
