Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Forms and Functions of Conjunction In A Novel “A Stolen Life” by Jaycee Dugard. In the aspect of forms, conjunction is devided into Coordinative conjunction, Subordinative conjunction and correlative conjunction. On functional grounds, conjunction can distinguish between coordinating conjunctions (coordinators) and subordinating conjunctions (subordinators). Coordinators function as linkers between sentences, clauses, and phrases. Subordinators introduce subclauses, that is clauses functioning as constituents of sentences or phrases. This research is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the conjunction in the novel in terms of the forms and functions. This is a descriptive study that used the consept of Aarts and Aarts (1982). The result of this research shows that, the coordinate conjunctions found are and, but, or, and for.Tthe subordinate conjunctions found are if, while, because, unless, that, before, whether, since, yet, until, as, than, so, although, however, whenever, as soon as, as if, as well as, and such as. The correlative conjunctions found are whether…or and either…or. The functions of conjunction found are connecters between two words in one a sentence, two phrases in one sentence, clauses and clauses, clauses and phrases, and phares and clauses. Keywords:  Forms and Functions, Conjunction, A Stolen Life

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This research is set to identify, analyze, and describe the morphophonemic processes and its types in both English and Balinese language, as well as uncovering the similarities and differences of morphophonemic processes in both languages. This research analyzes and describes the morphophonemic processes in both languages according to the theory of morphophonemic rules by Jensen (1990). The required data is collected from various sources. The English data were collected from various English books and dictionaries, and the Balinesse data were collected from various sources as well. However, the Balinese data were collected mainly from the informants in Werdhi Agung village in Bolaang Mongondow regency. Other additional sources were collected from previous research and articles in Balinese, as well as various books of Balinese. For example: Struktur Bahasa Bali (1981) by Bawa, W et al, Geografi Dialek Bahasa Bali (1981) by Herusantosa et al, Kamus Bali - Indonesia (1985) by Bagus, G et al, and other books as well. Other data were sourced from recorded audio-visual dialogs in Balinese traditional plays and wayang puppet show. This research uncovers some similarities and differences in morphophonemic processes of English and in Balinese. There are ten kinds of morphophonemic rules, according to Jensen (1990). The processes are assimilation, dissimilation, insertion, deletion, haplology, metathesis, vowel harmony, vowel reduction, tone rules, and morpheme sequence rules. In English, most processes are present, except vowel harmony and tone rules. In Balinese, most of those aforementioned processes are also present, except metathesis and tone rules. Keywords: Morphophonemic Process, English Language, Balinese Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Language is one of the characteristics of human beings that differentiate them from other creatures. In this case, human beings use language as a tool of communication. In uttering something, people are not only sounding sentence, but also transferring it into behavior. This is called speech acts, and illocutionary act is one of the aspects of it. This study focuses on one of the categories of illocutionary act, conflictive act that is used in the film The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. In collecting the data, the writer elicits the data through the conversation among the characters in the film. To analyze the data the writer uses Leech’s theory. Leech divided conflictive act into four kinds which is are threatening, reprimanding, accusing and cursing. It is hoped that one kind of conflictive act that is not found in this research which is cursing, can be found in other research. However, it is suggested for researchers to use another theory of illocutionary acts in other objects such as native language, novel, short story and many others.   Keywords: Speech act; Illocutionary act; Conflictive act; Film : The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
