Abstract

ABSTRACT              This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the English and Sahu language specifying on the process of reduplications, by also to contrast the forms, function and meaning of reduplications of both languages. The English data are collected from several English books, about reduplication, thesis, related theories from library and internet. Whereas Sahu language are collected from the Sahu language dictionary, the Sahu language bible and also collected from informants of Sahu language in Tibobo Village. The descpritive method is used to describe and analyze the reduplication in both languages. After describing the process of reduplication in English and Sahu language, the writer makes a contrastive analysis to find out the similarities and differences of both languages. Theoretically, this investigation is going to give a contribution in morphological analysis especially in reduplication, for development of linguistics. The result of this investigation shows that English has a full reduplication phonemic variations. Whereas Sahu language has many types of reduplication, such as: full reduplication, partial reduplication, and the reduplication with affixation. Keywords: Reduplication, English and Sahu Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

This research entitled “Tema Kelangsungan Hidup Dalam Cerita Pendek The Shawl  Karya Cyntihia Ozick“ is written to fulfill the requirement of finish  S1 degree in English Department Faculty of Letter Sam Ratulangi University. The Objective of this research based on the problems, the writer simply aims at identify, analyze and describe the survival theme in short story “The Shawl”. In analyzing the data the writer uses descriptive Intrinsic and Extrinsic Approach to analyze each of its elements based on some theories such as : Abrams M. H. (1976). The Miror and the Lamp, Stanton R. (1965). An Introduction to Fiction, also from several literature experts. The results of this research, showing that human need much to learn and deeply understanding about “Survival” in reality, for there are many connections between this matter and the daily life which is proven in some basic human activities such as primary needs of food, clothes, shelters, and rights that will never being apart from this standard game of life called “Survival” _________________ Keywords: Survival, Short Story The Shawl

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Deiksis dalam Film God’s Not Dead 2 Karya Harold Cronk”. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the types of deixis and to analyze the usage of deixis in the film God’s Not Dead 2 by Harold Cronk. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data of deixis have been taken from the sentences in the film God’s Not Dead 2. The data were analyzed based on Levinson theory.  The result of this research shows that are five types of deixis in the film God’s Not Dead 2, those are person deixis (first person : I, we, our, my, me, us, ours, myself, and mine ; second person : you, your, and youself ; and third person : she, himself, they, her, him, them, his, he, and their), place deixis : here, field, locker room, parking, sidewalk, class, home, in front of, church, classroom, there, coffee shop, campus, and hospital, time deixis : tonight, this day, 2.000 years ago, last 3 months, 5 minutes, many years earlier, after years, during, other night, and two days, discourse deixis : this, that, it, and those, and social deixis : junior, low man, juror, Your Honor, the touchtone, client, waiter, historic figure, young lady, hostile witness, ladies, gentleman, and Father. Whereas the usage of deixis found in the film God’s Not Dead 2 are symbolic and gestural usage.  It is expected that this research will help the students and the other readers in learning the pragmatic aspects, especially about deixis. Abstract

ABTRACT The research is entitled ‘Imperative Sentences in the Film Cinderella by Kenneth Branagh. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the imperative sentences. The problems of this research are focused on the forms and functions of imperative sentences. The data are taken from the Film ‘Cinderella’ by Kenneth Branagh and the method of research is descriptive method.  The identification and classification of the data are based on the theory of Quirk and Greenbeum related to the forms of imperative sentence. In addition, the data analysis related to the functions of imperative sentence uses the theory of Aarts and Aarts. The result of this research show that the forms consist of commands without subject (sixty nine sentences), commands with a subject (twenty eight sentences), commands with let or let’s (eleven sentences), negative commands (eight sentences), and persuasive commands (six sentences). Command without subject is the most used form by the characters in film ‘Cinderella’; In term of the function of imperative sentence, they are command, wish, invitation and warning. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis Skripsi is entitled Cerminan Feminisme dalam novel The Best of Me karya Nicholas Sparks. The objectives of this research were to identify, analyze and describe the feminism as well as to analyze how women fought the struggle with women power in The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks. The writer based her research on the theory of Betty Friedan (1963). According to Friedan, there are five concepts of feminism that consist of The Suburban Women, The American Women, The Educated Women, The Happy Women, and New Women. In conducting this study, the writer used intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, and qualitative analysis in which the process consists of describing, analyzing, and interpreting process. Intrinsic element was used to analyze and identify the characters, and the extrinsic element was used to analyze and describe the types of feminism. These approaches were applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and to answer the problems. The results of this research were the description of events to know Amanda’s characters, the woman who struggled and fought with her power based on the five concepts of feminism by Betty Friedan (1963). Keyword: Feminism, Character

Abstract

ABSTRACT English and Yalilanguage are two languages of different language families. English belongs to Indo- European group, whereas  Yali language belongs to the lingua Malanesian Austronesian one. Each of them has its own characteristics. This study is an attempt to describe and contrastthe  aspectand the using of language, that is, the pronouns. The method applied by the writer in this study is the theory of  Bloomfield and Aarts and Aarts theory to describe the two languages and Lado’  concepts to contrast them. This result shows that English has eight kinds of pronouns namely: personal pronouns, demonstratives pronouns,  self relative pronouns, possesive pronouns, interrogative pronouns, masculine and feminine pronouns. The Yali Language  comprises eight kinds of pronouns namely:personal pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, self pronouns, relative pronouns, interrogative pronouns. Both English and Yali language have first, second, and third person singular and plural.  In the noun phrase these pronouns function as head and determinerand than as post modifier in the structure of noun phrase whereas inthe sentence they function as subject and object Key words A  Contrastive Analysis, English and Yali  language.

Abstract

ABSTRAK  Penulisan ini mengambil topik tentang Sejarah Jemaat Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM) Bukit Hermon Malalayang Kota Manado Tahun 1999-2016. Dalam penulisan ini penulis menggunakan metode sejarah yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu: heuristik, kritik analisa, interpretasi, dan tahap terakhir ialah historiografi. Selain penulis menggunakan metode sejarah, dalam hal ini penulis juga menggunakan ilmu sosial sebagai alat bantu untuk memungkinkan penganalisaan dan penginterpretasian yang lebih tajam untuk menjawab apa yang menjadi masalah dalam suatu penulisan. Gereja yang mulai berkembang saat ini menunjukkan setiap perkembangan dari jemaat yang mendiami suatu permukiman sehingga didasari oleh jemaat untuk mendirikan suatu Jemaat. Ini merupakan suatu alasan bagi penulis untuk menulis sejarah GMIM Bukit Hermon. Melakukan identifikasi dan penelitian, penulis mendapat kesimpulan Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa khususnya jemaat Bukit Hermon.Kemudian terjadi pemekaran dari jemaat GMIM Kalvari Malalayang menjadi jemaat GMIM Bkit Hermon.  Kata Kunci : Sejarah Perkembangan, GMIM Bukit Hermon tahun 1999-2016

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Main Characters Dream in the Short Stories “ The Gentle boy” and “ The Ambitious Guest” is a skripsi which is to fulfill one of the requirements to achieve the title of Sarjana Sastra. There are two main problems to be analyzed; those are “what are the main characters dream in the short stories The Gentle Boy and The Ambitious Guest“ and “what are the leading factors that influence they dreams”. The purposes of this research are to identify and describecharacters dreams, to identify and describe the leading factors that influence their dreams and to compare their dreams. In identifying characters dream, the writer used Stantons’ theory through the intrinsic to analyzing the character, plot and setting, and for the analyzing data the writer used descriptive method and intrinsic approach. The result of this research show that there are two types to reach human dream, there are the dream that achieved with great effort and helps from the others and the dreams will not accompanied with effort or only false dream.   Keywords : Dreams, Intrinsic approach, Short Story, “The Gentle Boy” and “The Ambitious Guest”.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “The Traditional Symbols of Marriage in Scotland and Pamona Central Sulawesi: A Semiotic Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, describe, analyze, and contrast the kinds and meanings of the traditional symbols of marriage in Scotland and Pamona. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The data of traditional symbols of marriage in Scotland were collected  from several sources in the internet, while the data of traditional symbols of marriage in Pamona were collected from wedding event and by interviewing the informants to get explanations about the symbols. The writer uses Peirce’s theory in anylizing the data and Lado’s theory in contrasting both symbols to find out their differences and similarities. The result of this research shows that traditional symbols of marriage in Skotland are founded ten kinds such as wedding ring, wedding dress, wedding cake, wedding kiss, luckenboot brooch, wedding bouquet, toss the bride’s bouquet, quaich Skotland, ceilidh dance and honeymoon while traditional symbols of marriage in Pamona are founded four kinds such as wedding dress, necklace, sampapitu and wata oli (dowry), and dero dance. The similarities of both cultures are symbols of engagement such as ring, necklace and traditional dance. The differences of both cultures are Scotland traditional marriage has wedding cake, wedding kiss, wedding dress, luckenbooth brooch, wedding bouquet, toss the bride’s bouquet, quaich Scotland, honeymoon, while in Pamona hasn’t. Pamona traditionl marriage uses the symbol of  sampapitu and wata oli (dowry, while Scotland hasn’t.  Keywords: Traditional Symbols, Marriage, Scotland and Pamona, Semiotic Analysis.
