Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to identify, classify, and analyze the idioms based on their forms and meanings. The descriptive method is used in this research, and the data have been taken from a Calum Scotts song lyrics and analyzed based on the theory of Boatner and Gates. The result of this research shows there are many in various idiom?s forms. Found in the lyricsthose are idioms that classified informs, lexemic idioms, which connects of four classes they are verbal idioms,nominal idioms, adjective idioms, and adverb idioms, phrases idioms, proverb and the writer didn?t find frozen form idiom in this song.This research can provide knowledge about the meaning of idioms in semantic studies, especially for readers, and can help students of the Faculty of Humanities, especially students majoring in English literature to examine idioms using different objects, also, this research can be used as a reference for further research. Key words Idiom Form and Meaning, semantics Analysis, The song lyrics of  Calum scott.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis skripsi is entitled Penindasan terhadap Wanita yang digambarkan dalam novel The Girl on the Train oleh Paula Hawkins. The objectives of this research are to identify, analyze and describe the oppression as well as to analyze the effects of the oppression portrayed through characters in The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.The writer based to his research on the theory of Iris Young in Oppression, Privilege, and Resistance. According to Young, there are five faces of oppression that consists of; exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence.In conducting this study, the writer uses intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, and also this skripsi is data qualitative analysis in which the process consists of describing, analyzing, and interpreting process. Intrinsic element is used to analyze and identify the characters, and the extrinsic element is used to analyze and describe the types of oppression that oppressed the characters as well as the women, the victim through the novel, and the writer also will classify the effects of the oppression. These approaches are applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and to answer the problems. The data are taken from the novel The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins whereas the result of this research are the description of event which to know the characters, the women that get oppressed by the subjugation by classifying the five faces of oppression that consists of; exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence as well as the effects among the characters physically and psychologically.Keywords: oppression, oppression on women.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “The Translation Book of James in the Contemporary English Version and New Indonesian Translation Bible” is written to identify, classify and analyze the differences book of James in the Contemporary English Version and New Indonesian Translation Bible. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data were taken from the book of James based on Contemporary English Version and New Indonesian Translation Bible in terms of personal pronouns, conjunctions, plural and singular forms, vocabularies, and tenses by using the Larson’s (1984) and Lado’s (1971) theory. The book of James in the Contemporary English Version and New Indonesian Translation Bible has 30 differences in terms of grammatical structure and lexical meanings. Both of the books have 5 chapters consist of 107 verses. There are 169 sentences in the book of James in Contemporary English Version but the book of James in the New Indonesian Translation Bible only has 127 sentences. The differences are most commonly found by the writer are the use of conjunctions and plural and singular forms. Keywords: Translation, Contrastive, Book of James.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled ?A Deixis Analysis in Selected Nelson Mandela?s Speeches?. In this research the writer focuses on deixis in the speeches. The speeches of Nelson mandela was famous in the last of 20th century. Those speech are: Nelson Mandela?s speech after his release from prison and Nelson Mandela?s speech at his inauguration as a president of South Africa. The purpose of this research are to identify and classify the types of deixis and to analyze the usage of deixis in Nelson Mandela?s Speeches. The data were analyzed based on Levinson?s theory (1983) there are 5 types of deixis, those are: person deixis (first person, second person, third person), place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Deixis belongs to pragmatic. It means ?pointing?.The results of this research show that there are five types of deixis in Nelson Mandela?s Speeches, those are person deixis (first person: I, we, my, myself us, our, ourselves; second person : you, your; and third person : they, it their, his own, himself), places deixis : here, this city, this country this stage, come, this common homeland, this land, time deixis: today, lasted too long, when, back, not so long ago, the time, the moment, three decades, the darkest day in history, on this occasion, 40 years, long and lonely years, the past few years, remaining years of my life, this day, discourse deixis : this and it, and social deixis: your majesties, your highness, my comrades, friends, all political prisoner, the traditional leader, fellow South African, black and white, the masses, distinguished international guest. Additionally, deixis that mostly appears on Nelson Mandela?s speech after his release from prison is first person deiksis ?I? represents Nelson Mandela as a leader who govern black South African  whereas at the second speech deixis that mostly appears on Nelson Mandela?s speech at his inauguration as a president of South Africa is first person deixis ?we? representing that all of South African were united.Keywords : Pragmatic, Deixis, Speech, Nelson Mandela

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe research is entitled ?Motivasi Guru Bahasa Inggris dalam Memilih Karier Mengajar: Studi Kasus di Sekolah Menengah Atas Airmadidi?. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the English Teachers? types of motivation in choosing teaching as a career. And also, it is to analyze and describe the main motivations that exist in English Teachers?. This research uses a descriptive method. The writer collected the data by interviewing English Teachers with a total of 7 participants from two schools, SMA N I Airmadidi and SMK Klabat Airmadidi. The writer has found 3 types of motivation from the results of this study namely Altruistic Motives, Intrinsic Motives and Extrinsic Motives. The findings of this research showed that 4 English Teachers chose Altruistic Motives, 2 English Teachers? chose Extrinsic Motives and 1 English Teachers? chose Intrinsic Motives. In this research, the writer also found 3 main motivations specifically that appear most often. First, factors from family and parents count 10 times. Second, educate count 7 times. The third, to build or shape of children character counted 4 times and the main motivation in general are extrinsic motives totaling 16, altruistic motives totaling 13 and followed by intrinsic motives totaling 5.      Keywords:  Motivation, English Teachers?, Career

Abstract

ABSTRACTConvivial act as a part of Illocutionary is not only found in our daily life, but also in literary studies such as novel, drama, short stories, novella and film. This study is an attempt to identify, classify  and analyze the aspect of convivial act in the film Hunger Games : Mockingjay directed by Francis Lawrence. The method used in the research is descriptive method. The data are identified and analyzed descriptively. In collecting data, the writer reads some pragmatic books pertaining to convivial act. After that, the writer watches the film and looks the whole story of the film to obtain good understanding of the context of the story inthe film.Then the writer identified and classified the data into relevant aspects of convivial act. The collected data were analyzed descriptively in terms of how the aspect of convivial are found in the film Hunger Games : Mockingjay based on Leech’s and Austin theory. The research show that the convivial act can be categorized into five categories, those are offering, inviting, greeting, congratulating, and thanking, and how the aspect of convivial act used by the characters. Abstract

ABSTRACT Idiom is an expression that contain of word, phrase or clause which have a frequent figurative language that is often used in speech.  the meaning of idiom is very different from literal meaning, it does not describe one of the word which is form it. Idiom has an important role in constructing formative sentences. This study focuses on idiomatic expressions used in Inferno movie. The foreigner students found many difficulties to understand the meaning of idiom by the native speaker English. The writer realizes that idiom is the one of the most important part in language  especially in English language. This reality encourages the writer to research the form and meaning of the idiom in Inferno movie. The aim of this research is to identify, classify, and analyze the idiom based on their forms and meanings. The descriptive method is used in this research, the data has been taken from the movie and analyzed them based on the theory Boatner and Gates. The results of this research shows that idioms can be found in various of idiom?s form. It is proved by the number of idioms form which was identified in the movie : There are 76 idioms that classified in 3 forms, 56 lexemic idioms, which are divided in 4 classes, 42 verbal idioms, 7 noun idioms, 1 adjective idiom, 6 adverb idioms, 19 phrases idioms, 2 proverbs.   Keyword : Idiom, form and meaning, Inferno

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research which is entitled ?Makna Eskatologi dalam Seventh Day Adventist Hymnal? is focused on sign and meaning that can be found in Seventh Day Adventist Hymnal. The aims of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the signifier, signified and the meaning of eschatology that can be found in lyrics on Seventh Day Adventist Hymnal. The writer uses theory of Saussure to identify and classifythe data. In analyzying the data, the writer used the theory of Pierce which states that An interpretant (or interpretant sign) is the sign's more or less clarified meaning or ramification, a kind of form or idea of the difference which the sign's being true or undeceptive would make. The source of lyrics songs was taken from the book of Seventh Day Adventist Hymnal. The method of this research is qualitative method. Qualitative data is a form of words rather than a row of numbers. The results of this research show that based on the theory of Saussure there is signifier and signified in lyrics songs are on SDA Hymnal and based on the theory of Pierce there are 7 clauses,17 phrases, 16 sentences and 3 words that have eschatology meaning which consists of Jerusalem; my happy home, Marching to Zion, Sweet by and by, Jerusalem the Golden, Joy by and by, Shall we gather at the river, The homeland, I?m going home, There?ll be no sorrow there, Beautiful Zion, Together let us sweetly live, In the garden, How lovely is thy dwelling place, In a little while we?re going home, Over yonder, Burdens are lifted at Calvary, The Lord is coming, Gleams of the golden morning, You will see your Lord a-coming, Don?t you see my Jesus coming, Nearer my God to thee, O God; unseen, yet ever near, Christ is coming, Hail him the king of glory, Come; thou long expected Jesus, It may be at morn, There?ll be no dark valley, That glorious day is coming, Tis almost time for the Lord to come, Jesus is coming again, We have this hope, When Jesus comes in glory, We know not the hour, O brother; be faithful, The king shall come, Christ the Lord; all power possessing, The judgment has set, O solemn thought, Day of the judgment; day of wonders!, Once to every man and nation._________________Keywords: Eschatology Meaning, Seventh Day Adventist Hymnal, Semiotic Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT               This research entitled "Deiksis dalam film God’s Not Dead Karya Harold Cronk"The purpose of this study is to identify and classify the types of deixis and analyze the use of deixis in the film God’s Not Dead by Harold Cronk. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data used in this study were taken from sentences in the film God’s Not Dead. Data analysis uses Levinson's theory.The results of this study indicate that there are 5 types of deixis in film God’s Not Dead, those are person  deixis (first person: I, I'm, mine, me, we, second person: You, your, yourself and third person: They, them, he, she's, his, everyone). Place deixis: World, Podium, Classroom, Pool, Roman Colosseum, La Rive Gauche, Park, Class, In front of a room, Dakar, Zurich, Zurich, Frankfurt, Frankfurt and Carter International. Time deixis: Next Friday, 3 sessions, 20 minutes, Some 13.7 billions years ago, 2500 years, Next week’s, Tomorrow, 2000 years ago, Year, One day and All the time. Discourse deixis : That, This, Those, It's. Social deixis: Prosecutor, Defense attorney, Jury, My friend, Ladies, Gentleman, Brave young freshman, My father, Honey, Meciful Father, Silly boy, Minority, Freshman. While the analysis related to the use of deixis in the film Gods Not Dead found the use of gestural deixis and symbolic deixis. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis skripsi entitled ?Code Mixing in the Lyrics of Saykoji?s Songs: Sociolinguistic Analysis?. The aim of this research is to identify, analyze and describe the code mixing appeared in the lyrics of Saykoji?s songs. The theory that are used in this research is by Muysken (2000) and this research uses a descriptive method. The data was taken from Saykoji?s songs. The result of this research shows that there are three processes of code mixing in the lyrics of Saykoji?s songs through its insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization.  Key Words: Sociolinguistic, Code Mixing, Internet, Saykoji?s Songs
