Abstract

The Megatrust and Benioff subduction seismic sources of the Sulawesi Sea Micro Plate subducted at 100 km beneath of North Sulawesi's Arm have significant effect in radius of 150 km in this peninsula. The Deterministic Seismic Hazard Analysis-DSHA from megathrust seismic source zone using attenuation function model of Young et al (1997) to the Manado City result in 0.22 g, equal to VIII MMI. Microzonation efforts in this region are conducted in order to mitigate future seismic hazards.Keyword: Seismic hazard, attennation function, Maximum Credible Earthquake (MCE) and Maximum intensity

Abstract

Abstract

A geological and paleontological studies on the Balangbaru and Marada Formations has been carried out. Both formations show that their depositional environment was in basin with turbidity currents. Marada Formation can be correlated with Panggalungan Member of the distal part of the Balangbaru Formation. Paleontological study on the Balangbaru Formation has yielded some macrofossils such as echinoid, bivalve Inoceramus sp., ammonite Grossouvreites sp. Marada Formation contains trace fossil Spirorhaphe sp. and species of nannoplankton have been extracted from the shale e.g. Ceratolithoides aculeus, C. kamptneri, Lucianorhabdus cayeuxii, L. arcuatus, L. maleformis, Micula murus, M. concava Lithraphidites quadratus, and Prediscosphaera sp. Based on the presence of macrofossils, nannoplankton, and radiolarian fossils of previous workers it can be concluded that the deposition of the Balangbaru and Marada Formations was in Albian to Maastrichtian (Late Early Cretaceous to Late Cretaceous) time. Keywords: echinoid, bivalvia, ammonite, trace fossil, nannoplankton, radiolarian turbidite

Abstract

Alluvial diamonds are found in several places in Kalimantan,   out up to now the source (rock) of alluvial diamond in Kalimantan is not known yet. Since 19th centuries, some companies had explored alluvial diamond in these areas but none of them have succeded  to find the source rock of alluvial diamond. The study of alluvial diamond distribution in West Kalimantan, especially along Landak River, indicates that the alluvial diamond in this area is limited only in Protolandak drainages, including Landak and Sekayam River regions. The result of heavy mineral analysis from this study could be used to estimate the distribution of alluvial diamond and heavy minerals content in this area.  Besides this, it is also used to trace where the source rock of alluvial diamond comes from. Keywords.: alluvial  diamond, heavy mineral, West Kalimantan

Abstract

Zircon and apatite fission track analysis has been employed to constrain a cooling episode of the Oligocene-Miocene granitic sequences in the Palu region, Middle Sulawesi. A fission track dating from five outcrops resulted in zircon ages ranging between 9.5±0.5 Ma and 29.5±2.1 Ma. These ages may represent the onset of crystallisation during magmatic emplacement. This interpretation is consistent with the corresponding K/Ar ages ranging between 8.6 Ma for biotite and 31 Ma for feldspar. All but one sample show apatite fission track ages younger than zircon ages. The apatite fission track ages range between 6.2±1.3 Ma and 29.3±2.5 Ma. Importantly, the oldest zircon and apatite crystals separated from the rock sample derived from pluton in the southern section suggest that the host sequence has not undergone a further cooling event since crystallisation in the Oligocene. However, the remaining apatite fission track ages from rock successions in the northern sector of the studied region reveal an episode of post-crystallisation rapid cooling of the Oligocene granitic pluton, possibly due to local-scale uplift in response to overthrust in the late Miocene. Keywords: cooling, fission track, granitic pluton, Sulawesi

Abstract

The studied  area is located in south Kalimantan waters. Regionaly and physiographically it is an interesting location because this location is the transition area between the west and east Indonesian regions in which their geologic setting are very different. The transition area is reflected by the difference in the sea floor morphology. The bathymetry contour pattern at the western area that is part of the Sunda Shelf is reflected by a straight contour and distanlyspaced among them. Its slope is not more than 1” which is then calledas a Plain morphology unit. While the eastern area has a locally close pattern and its slope Is quitegentle. This feature is called as a Reef hilly morphology unit. Keywords: sea floor morphology unit, subsurface structure, Kalimantan

Abstract

Fine-grained pyroclastic rocks  found in the Cibadak area, Sukabumi divided into two groups, namely Tertiary tuff composing of Jampang Formation and Quarternary tuff as the result of  young volcanic eruptions. The relationship between mineralogy and geochemistry of those tuffs are discussed in this paper. Laboratory testing was conducted on fifty rock samples taken from the field. A kind of mineralogy composing the rock can be identified by the XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) mineralogy test, while the major oxide of the rock can be calculated with the XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) geochemistry test. The XRD mineralogy test shows  two secondary mineral that becomes the differentiation between the two tuffs are zeolites and clay minerals. The zeolites present at most of the Tertiary tuffs as a result of the rock alteration which involves an increasing in formation temperature and pressure. Clay minerals are mostly present at the Quarternary tuffs as a result of rock wheathering on the surface. The zeolite and clay minerals are associated with almost all chemical oxides of the rocks. The chemical oxides including SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, K2O, TiO, and MnO. The XRF rock-chemically characters show there are no differences of the chemical oxide components on both of these pyroclastic rock groups. Keywords: mineralogy, geochemistry, tuff, Tertiary, Quarternary.

Abstract

The geological structures in the study area are dominated by faults. The rest directions of the faults are northeast-southwest (16 faults) and north-south (14 faults). The remainder of faults are trending in northwest-southeast (3 faults) and west-east (3 faults) directions. Generally, the northeast-southwest and north-south trending faults are dominated by sinitral faults and a few of them are reactivated as normal faults. Whereas the northwest-southeast and west-east trending faults are mainly dextral and or normal faults.Key words: fault, sinitral, normal, and lineament

Abstract

The Early Neogene sediments in the central part of the Serayu Basin have different sedimentological characteristics of one unit from the others. They comprise the mean value of four variables, i.e. (1) sand/shale ratio, (2) bed frequency, (3) smectite / kaolinite ratio or Sm/(Sm+Ko), and (4) quartz/feldspar ratio or K/(K+F). The difference of the mean value of those four variables represents implication of different intensities of tectonic and volcanism activities. The variable values suggest that there was increasing tectonic activity followed by increasing volcanic activity from older rock unit to younger unit. Keywords: sedimentological characteristics, tectonic activity, volcanic activity, Serayu Basin
