Abstract

This study aims to evaluate English conversational skills in early childhood through the use of the Comma 2.0 application as a learning medium. The research method follows an experimental approach, applying the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) in instructional design. In the analysis stage, we identified the needs and characteristics of early childhood learners in English language acquisition. We then designed the lessons by integrating the audio-visual-based Comma 2.0 application, adhering to instructional design principles that are engaging and suitable for early childhood development. The implementation was conducted with two groups: a control group using conventional learning methods and an experimental group using the Comma 2.0 application. Evaluation was performed before and after the intervention using English conversation skill tests. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group, validating the effectiveness of the Comma 2.0 application in enhancing English conversational skills in early childhood. These findings support the use of technology-based learning approaches in early childhood development, creating an interactive and engaging learning environment.

Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of reporting verb usage in article texts written by Indonesian speakers. This study is qualitative research that focuses on the comparison of the form, tense, and voice of reporting verbs. The data are clauses and sentences from fifty social science articles and fifty science articles published in national journals. The data analysis is based on Hyland’s theory (2002), supported by the theory of tense and voice by Azar (2002) and O’Dwyer (2006). The findings show that the forms of reporting verbs in social science articles are more varied, with around 33 verbs, compared to natural science articles, which amounted to 28. From the findings of these forms, the category classification of reporting verbs in social science leans towards discourse (69.09%), and natural science leans towards research (49.26%). In terms of tense, present simple is the tense that tends to be used in social science. Meanwhile, natural science uses two types of tense: present simple and past simple. Lastly, the voice of the reporting verb in the two disciplines applies active voice. These findings indicate that the characteristics of social research are argumentative, emphasizing the interpretation of ongoing phenomena. On the contrary, the characteristics of social research illustrate that it is experimental, reflecting a verified research process.

Abstract

This study explores EFL students' perceptions of using Quizizz as an assessment tool in Basic Reading class and examines its correlation with their reading proficiency. A survey was conducted among 25 students using a closed-ended questionnaire, and their reading proficiency was assessed using final test scores. The findings reveal that students generally have a positive perception of Quizizz, particularly in terms of its interactive features, motivation enhancement, and immediate feedback. Correlation analysis indicates a significant relationship between students' perceptions and their reading proficiency, suggesting that higher engagement with Quizizz is associated with better reading outcomes. However, some technical difficulties and accessibility challenges were noted, emphasizing the need for additional training and support. The study concludes that integrating Quizizz in reading instruction enhances student engagement and proficiency, though further research is needed to explore long-term effects and broader implementation strategies.

Translanguaging has emerged as a pedagogical approach that facilitates multilingual learners in the EFL higher education. While studies have extensively explored its benefits, limited study has examined the challenges encountered when implementing translanguaging in specific content area, such as Morphosyntax. This study addresses this gap by investigating challenges faced by a lecturer in translanguaging practices in an undergraduate of the English Language Education program. This research was belonged to qualitative research using a semi-structured interview. Based on the preliminary research, it showed that the lecturer applied translanguaging during the teaching and learning process. A semi-structured interview was conducted for 11 meetings to obtain data regarding the challenges confronted by the lecturer. The data were analyzed through a deductive thematic analysis to acquaint the objective of the research. The challenges of translanguaging were categorized into 3 aspects; situations, tasks, and problems. The findings revealed that during translanguaging practices in 3 learning phases, the lecturer did not encounter any significant challenges. Instead, the lecturer found that translanguaging practices had facilitative function to assist students in achieving the learning objectives. Therefore, this research elucidated the information about translanguaging practices as an approach that can be implemented in the English language teaching and learning.
