Abstract

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) continued to decline from secondary schools to universities level, as well as in lab, teaching and research policy-making and technology. This is triggered by the absence and minority of women in policy and decision-making regarding research in science and technology. Women’s leadership is very low in the area of energy use, adaptation to climate change, and economic production. In the formal sector, only 10% of women are in the sector of STI (science, technology, innovation). Only 5% of women who become members of the national academy of science technology in the respective disciplines. Why does it happen? This paper studies several vocational schools in Jakarta to answer those questions. This research found that the fear of a mother and daughter against STEM is not just happening today, but deeply rooted in the tradition, even in modern era. Besides bullying both in school and in the community, girls’ interest in STEM is also still very low compared to boys. However, this study found how girls copes those hindrances with strong will via their agency to win STEM in their education pathways.

Abstract

Sang Hyang Dedari Dance in religious ceremonies is not only aimed vertically to Sang Hyang Widhi, but also bearing horizontal objectives, to sustain stable structure in Bali society. This study aims to describe the layers of the society, so it can be understood critically what is meant by women of Bali—that the multicultural discourse, indigenous women celebrate the customs and traditions as an act against the root of patriarchy. Yet there is always a need to reexamine the roots. Root is not absolute, and a single tone, but rhizomes that question the hegemony of the hierarchy in winning gender equality against patriarchal subordination.

Abstract

The article entitled “Hannah Arendt’s Politics of Women in the Perspective of Philosophy” derived from the results of philosophical research. The research objective is specifically exploring the philosophical concept of Hannah Arendt’s politics of women and revealthe forms of implementation in the context of open access, participation, and political control those are involving the women. Hannah Arendt political concept subsequently is applied to be adopted as a political strategy to fight for political equality of women in Indonesia. Concept, form of implementation, and women’s political strategy is analyzed through library research by using the typical elements of philosophical research; interpretation, deduction and induction, historical continuity, idealization, heuristics, and inclusive language. By using the typical elements of philosophical research, it is found that the source of women political thought isoriginating from Hannah Arendt’s idea of labor. The idea lies in a private area which is regarded as the political basis of reproductive and the strength of birthrate. In addition, Hannah Arendt introduced the politics of women as a feminine ethics which is conceptuallydefined as the ability to forgive and to love. The politics of women at the praxis level, according to Hannah Arendt should emphasize the principle of equality in the public sphere and apply the typical feminine power.

Abstract

The rising number of women in parliament is a vital entry point to involve more women politics. This factor opens discourse, engagement and active participation that can elevate women’s political bargain in negotiation room. It is in the long run will affect the embodiment of critical mass which is believed to increase factor of women’s representation in policies decision. Mainstreaming gender in governance shall be supported by political engineering, institutional setting, roles of the game, and an open and democratic system. Democratic political setting is the pre-requisite to create equal representation and participation for women and other minorities group in governance politics.

Abstract

Since 2011, the number of case of HIV and AIDS suffered by Indonesian women tends to increase. However, the prevention of HIV and AIDS in Indonesia focuses only on high-risk group. Besides that, measures are not differentiated base on different needs of targetedgroup of programs. The article discusses gender mainstreaming in the prevention of HIV and AIDS program in Surakarta as well as the fulfilment of gender need of housewife who is prone to HIV and AIDS infection. The article is the result of a qualitative study with interactive analysis method. The research targeted housewives as research subjects due to the increasing number of housewives who suffer from HIV and AIDS infection. Moreover, they even placed as the second highest group infected by the disease in Surakarta. The data was collected from an in-depth interview, documentation and observation. The finding showed that the quality of gender equality in the HIV and AIDS mitigation policy in Surakarta is positioned in a gender neutral level, providing the equal rights and obligations for all citizens, regardless of their sex. This matter gives impact to the prevention of HIV and AIDS program that only focuses on the fulfilment of housewives practical gender needs.

Abstract

Women’s participation in politics is the manifestation of the citizenship right fulfillment. Women as well as vulnerable groups as citizens have the right to improve their existence in politics. The rights that attach to women as citizens hopefully can make them not only as the vote-getter or political parties’ participants but also as those being elected and exercise policy. Politic is genderless but politic system is constructed mostly by men. And women are lacking confidence within this culture of politic. It then deteriotes the stigma that women are unable and having no capacity to compete with men. Although women are legal citizens but the culture of politic is neither friendly to women nor conducive to feminine traits. The electoral process in citizenships system hopefully does not only create the man-represented view, but also a transformation process between the political party and the women platform.

Abstract

The segregation between men and women in technology as the impact of the assumption that technology is masculine leads to the paradigm that reveals the technology and its use as the man-thing. In this regard, the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is most likely playing the same role toward the paradigm of man-thing. Consequently, many women experience the gender discrimination in the cyber space. We the women are getting less space in using and maximizing ICT. There are several efforts of women in order to take part in the ICT world. This research aims to narrate the women who have taken control and maximized the use of ICT as a tool and media to deliver the message as well as knowledge in order to encourage themselves and other women in the field where they are in. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research by conducting the concept of cyber feminism as the scoping study deals with how the cyber space is used as the media to encourage women. In result, this research shows that the women are able to take control and maximize the use of ICT under the pressure of social and political construction tied in patriarchal morality in cyber space.

Abstract

Some of the Yellow Book (traditional source of Islamic Study) are taught in a traditional boarding school including sexual and reproductive health issues. Such discussion is the realm of the study of jurisprudence. However discussions in the Yellow Book are often gender-bias and less relevant to the women of today who have different sexual and reproductive health problems compared to their grandparents. As a result, many cases of sexual violence and women’s reproductive affecting female students because of lack of knowledge not to say being ”blind” of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). By using the approach of Islamic epistemology and feminist theological analysis, this paper will attempt to reconstruct the Islamic sciences by integrating the Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) into the study of gender and social science.
