Abstract

Sexual violence is an act of rape, sexual coercion, and harrasment, as well as sexual contact with coercion or threat using force. It is timely to consider that sexual violence is discussed in schools and take it as serious issue with empathy towards the victims and not only being considered as women’s issues that can only be discussed among women. Public awareness against it is crucial to be raised. This is important for women and girls as victim of violence to be survivors. These actions should also involve men in advocating against sexual violence. By providing an understanding of how men should behave toward women and listening to the testimony of women survivors of sexual violence of the trauma and its impact on women’s lives, it is expected that young men since early age will have a sensitivity in dealing with sexual violences.

Abstract

Our girls today faced with a condition that is very susceptible to the risk of child marriage age. The expectation that the child marriage be stopped immediately hit by a thick wall of patriarchal culture intertwined with the social structure, economic and political. Conditions of poverty, difficult geographical location, access to education are minimals, and the lack of willingness of policy makers have worsened the child’s age. But amid all the complexity of the state of marriage age of the child, there is a good practice the elimination of child marriage as in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Marriage age is quite high in some areas, such as in sub district in Gedangsari Gunung Kidul has made policy makers together with the residents making network-based integration MoU (the collective agreement) at the district level for the elimination of child marriages. This agreement contains cooperation of various institutions, both on the level of schools, villages, health centers, law enforcement officers, to institute the service of women in the sub-district level to end the marriage age of the child. Attempts to move along this done because all people agreed that the root causes of child marriage is not a single, then the handle should give space to all parties to move together.

Abstract

As a relatively new field of study, queer studies is still underexamined in Indonesian gender and sexuality discourse and studies. In addition to its complexities, examining and teaching sexualities in university is often perceived as ‘taboo’ and ‘indecent’. This claim becomes an impedement for queer studies to expand its coverage in tertiary institutions. In order to mainstream queer studies to public and university students, as a guest lecturer in several universities in Indonesia, the author tried to invent a participatory approach which put greater emphasis on reflexivity experience of the students, while the lecturer becomes a facilitator to generate meaningful and active discussions with the students. This reflection paper is an attempt to summarize the strategy of teaching queer studies in tertiary institutions, based on the author’s own teaching experience.

Abstract

Human rights which were convened by international laws and United Nations is at present universally ideal. However in implementation, this universality was contrained by interior politics, soveregnity, religious interpretation, and culture. Issues of LGBT has received wave of protests internationally and nationally though their rights are guaranteed within laws. Include LGBT issue has been debated on the national an local level. On the other hand, state has responsibility to promote, to protect, and to fulfill human rights for every single person, even people with sexual orientation and gender identity from any harms and violences. This paper will explore how human rights in Indonesia interior politics will protect LGBT groups.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of Indonesian Christian women in the public sphere, especially in the realm of politics. This article aims to reconstruct the role of Israelite women who lived in pre-monarchic Israel using sociological, social science, anthropological, and archeological methods. The result of my analysis shows that the demands of war that occurred continuously in the territory of ancient Israel and the opening of new land in the mountainous regions of Israel required the active participation of women to not only be involved in the reproduction but also the production–an activity that belonged to male members of the family. This phenomenon creates a balance in the division of labor between men and women which of course increased the status of women in society. The result of this reconstruction that underlines the active role of women in the public sphere in the world of ancient Israel becomes an important model for Christian women in Indonesia today to take an active role in the public sphere, especially in politics.

Abstract

Feminist pedagogy explicitly documented equal and inclusive interactions that is aware of the existence of the other in the text and practice of knowledge. Feminist pedagogy is not a tool or collection strategy, but it is a philosophy which links the theory of teaching and learning that putting feminism in its central dynamics. It accepts to be appreciated, criticized, and fought as a form of knowledge dynamics. First, it did the work of resistance against hierarchy and domination. Second, it used the experience as a source of knowledge. Third, it made a transformation and realization in arrays of critical ways. This paper investigates two studies centers: Gender Studies Graduate Program of UI (later shortened as KG UI), which was established in 1990; and Islam & Gender Study UIN Kalijaga (later shortened as IKG UIN YK) which was established in 2015. In-depth interviews are mainly done to the founders of the graduate school at the two universities, lecturers and students.
