Abstract

Particular economic interests and national and international financial demands condition the system according to which mental illnesses are assessed, diagnosed and treated. In the context of psychiatric pathologies, the market also exerts its influence through disease mongering, which consists in the tendency, operated by global pharmaceutical companies, to broaden the market, transforming common diseases into pathologies. Today, that which shifts the boundary between normal and pathological, in any case changing in accordance with the epochs and cultures, is the market strategy decided by ‘Big Pharma’. The construction of a psychiatric diagnostic category is, therefore, also the result of a commercial need, reinforced by a targeted sensitisation of public opinion. The creation of new pathologies is encouraged by a collective that requires, more than ever, the positioning and allaying of its own shadow. Key words: psychiatric disorder; Big Pharma; normal; pathological.

Abstract

Appraisal services involve gathering, organising, and interpreting information or data about the student for the purpose of understanding himself and his world. Information about the student is usually collected through psychological tests and written reports. The study was carried out to find out the school counsellors’ knowledge and use of anecdotal records – a non –test technique as a means of gathering information about students. The sample consists of 98 guidance counsellors randomly selected from the state secondary schools in Ondo State, Nigeria. A self-constructed 15 item questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of r= 0.94 was employed to elicit information from respondents. The result showed that majority of the counsellors 96(97.95%) have read about anecdotal forms. However all the counsellors sampled did not use them during their training as counsellors and have never made use of them as trained counsellors. Though they are aware of other assessment tests but the tests are not available in schools 66 (67.35%), Moreover only 40 (40.82%) of the counsellors can interpret these other tests adequately. The result also showed a significant relationship between counsellors’knowledge of anecdotal record forms and access to them. There is also significant correlation between counsellors’ knowledge of anecdotal forms and their use. However there is no significant correlation between counsellors’ knowledge of other forms of assessment and the interpretation of anecdotal record forms..Counselling implications were therefore highlighted for holistic and efficient schools guidance services.

Abstract

This article is about Mona Lisa’s gaze where it is accepted for about 500 years that she is looking at her viewers from all directions she is viewed from. However,a thorough experimental study about her view has never been done. As a researcher, the author has decided to check this phenomenon experimentally. 500 people were asked to look at her picture from right, front and left sides. The results were surprising and negate the well-known myth that Mona Lisa looks at the observer from all directions viewed. Only 65% confirmed that Mona Lisa gave back a look to them.In addition 93% confirmed that Mona Lisa was looking at them while observing at her from the right, 72% from the front and 78% from the left. Following this result brought the author to formulate the following principle: “if you look at any detail in a picture and this detail turns to you, it will turn from each direction you view it: from right, from front, from left, from above and from below. However, from your looking direction the element does not turn to you, it will never turn to you.” Thus, don’t view a picture only from the front. Move from right to left and the opposite and you will start to feel that the elements that turned to you from acertain direction will start to “move” in your brain to every direction from which you view them

Abstract

While earning per share (EPS) had a negative influence on dividend payout policy of firms in Nigeria for the period the study covered.  The study therefore recommends that managers of firms should endeavor to pay dividend as dividend payout policy enhances firm performance.

Abstract

This study explored school culture and teachers’ perspectives on Special Education Needs (SEN) and disabilities in relation to the inclusiveness of education within Guyana’s mainstream elementary school system. It was concluded that Guyanese mainstream elementary teachers have basic general knowledge of the theories and principles of being inclusive and promoting inclusive education. However, they lack training in the area of SEN. They are either unaware or uncertain of whether they have learners in their classes who have SEN that are not physical disabilities or known learning disabilities. Secondly, teachers are biased against teaching learners with SEN because they feel unsupported. They associate learners with SEN with challenging behaviours low cognitive ability and underachievement. Finally, the study proved that there is a direct relationship between school culture and teachers perspectives on SEN and disabilities. This is directly related to the inclusiveness of education within Guyana’s mainstream elementary schooling system.
