Abstract

Teacher well-being is upheld as an important factor in terms of improving the quality of teaching and school effectiveness (Leithwood, et al., 2006). The questionnaire survey, conducted in April/May 2009, was undertaken in two major cities in Saudi Arabia with an opportunistic sample of teachers (n = 445) drawn from 22 schools, both boys’ and girls’ schools. The questionnaire consisted of fixed-response items except a final open-ended question. The questionnaire sought to discover how teachers reacted to their working conditions. The study concludes by urging the Saudi Ministry of Education to improve the quality of facilities in its classrooms and to examine its in-service training provision. These changes would help teachers develop their teaching skills and provide a better quality of education for their students. It is important that teachers’ views and opinions are sought when bringing about improvements. The researcher also considers what she has learned about research work from conducting the study. In conclusion, she calls on the Ministry of Education when developing its provision, to take more account of the views of teachers. They have firsthand experience of working in Saudi classrooms; as such, they represent a valuable resource, which should be supported and encouraged.

Abstract

The internationalization of Chinese higher education (ICHE) is the corollary of the Opening-up policy. With “the Belt and Road” Initiative, education for international understanding (EIU) plays an important role in promoting ICHE. Certain aspects should be noted: 1) To clarify the purposes of ICHE and to optimize the content system of EIU; 2) To improve the level of faculty internationalization in higher education and cultivate faculties’ international understanding literacy; 3) To improve international exchanges and cooperation of colleges and universities against the background of internationalization Key Words: Internationalization of Chinese Higher Education, Education for International Understanding, the Belt and Road

Abstract

According to the Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers No 535/1999, Article 1, laying down the “Regulation on the tasks of the Committee for Foreign Minors, in conformity with Articles 33(2) and 33(2-bis) of Legislative Decree No 286 of 25 July 1998”, in Italy ‘unaccompanied foreign minor’ (UAM) refers to “a minor who does not have Italian or other EU citizenship, has not applied for asylum and is, for any reason, within the territory of the State without care or representation by their parents or other adults who are legally responsible for them under existing Italian laws”. This provision was defined as the solution to a social phenomenon that became particularly significant in the country number-wise in the 1990s.Despite the attention of the Government, the actual number of UAMs within the territory of the State is difficult to define, since most of them do not fulfil residence regulations and move considerably within Italian territory. Over the past seven years, the number of UAMs has remained stable with an average of 7/8,000 per year, and a peak of 8,461 in 2013. This figure will be greatly exceeded in 2014.This paper analyses the evolution of the presence of UAMs Italy, their characteristics, their migratory projects and some aspects of the social practices and procedures regarding UAMs in Italy.

Abstract

The media in the United States are the “influentials” of the day. But, all too often their influence, purposeful or not, are agenda driven and based on incomplete and inaccurate “facts.”The current authors’ experiences across the world say this is true in most other developed countries. Of course in some of the countries the press reports and government reports are the same, and in newly free or near free countries most do not trust their press. These assertionsare supported by antidotal evidence and careful analysis.  If you agree or not, read on to advance your thinking.By thinking to learn we learn to think.  We will provide insight into transferring understandable data into useful information. The key research question is: are we better off if the academy took a different approach to teaching, learning and publishing? Shallow understandings, witnessed and documented, during discussions and press reports of current events reinforce the ‘opinions based on little knowledge’ phenomena that leads to the current quagmire of vastly opposing views. Readers of this current research and opinion manuscript are challengedto find scientific, medical and academically referred journal articles, and official governmental data before accepting the wisdom of the day or the pronouncements within this manuscript. In all we in the professoriate do keep in mind that“The work of the professor becomes consequential only as it is understood by others (Boyer, 2016: p. 13).”

Abstract

Teachers are most effective when they match their instruction to a student’s learning style (Dunn & Dunn, 1993).  It is very important for students to be engaged in activities that build on their perceptual and cognitive strengths.  After all, traditional instruction, compromising of teacher-directed information intake, only works for a percentage of students.  In the present quasi-experimental study, 16 students in a suburban middle school on Long Island were taught eighth grade social studies through a learning styles Contract Activity Package.  The other 16 students in the control group were taught through traditional instruction.  Using a contract activity package, students were assigned behavioral objectives for each lesson, activity alternatives, reporting alternatives for each behavioral objective, and team learning activities.  Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to both groups of students to measure the effects of both forms of instruction.  The students who learned through contract activity packages achieved proportionally similar gains from pre- and post-tests as compared with the students who learned through traditional instruction.  Additionally, males and females who learned through contract activity packages achieved proportionally similar gains from pre- and post-tests.  Based on the findings, the incorporation of learning styles strategies such as contract activity packages can serve as an alternative method of teaching for students that are not being fully serviced through traditional instruction.
