Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is an important risk factors of atherosclerosis. Bitter leaf is believed to have potency in decreasing plasma lipid. The aim of this study is to study the effect of bitter leaf ethanol extract in decreasing total cholesterol serum levels on hypercholesterolemic male Wistar rats. This is a true experimental laboratory study with complete randomized design. Antidyslipidemia effect was tested with HFF induction and Propiltiourasil 0,01% towards 30 rats which were divided into 6 groups: groups I as normal control (standard diet), groups II, III, and IV were given bitter leaf ethanol extract of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW, and 400 mg/kgBW dose, group V as positive control group with Simvastatin, and group VI as negative with aquades. HFF  were given for 14 days then the study was continued for 14 days. The percentage data of the declining total cholesterol levels before and after treatments is analyzed with ANAVA, continued with LSD test. The result between group II, III, and IV with group VI shows a significant difference p<0,01. We concluded bitter leaf ethanol extract can decrease the level of total cholesterol serum of hypercholesterolmic Wistar rats.

Abstract

The prevalence of cancer increases each year, from 4.7‰ in 2007 to 5 ‰ in 2013. InWest Java, the prevalence of cancer is quite high at 1.0 ‰. Obesity becomes a risk factor forcancer. Exercise is aimed to solve the obesity problem, prevent and improve the cancer patientcondition, as well as improve the quality of life of cancer patients. Exercise plays a role in thetreatment of cancer patients. The potential benefits obtained during and after exercise areincrements of strength, speed, muscle mass, physical functions, range of motions, immunefunctions, the average completeness of chemotherapy, improved body shape, moods andconfidence. For patients diagnosed with breast cancer, exercise acts as a therapeutic to preventthe disease and its etiology factors (hormonal theory, the theory of immunity and inflammationtheory). Applying the proper exercise (frequency, intensity, type and time) in cancer patientswould improve the physical performance which is impaired due to cancer. Exercise canimprove levels of fitness, muscle strength, quality of life and fatigue in patients with cancersurvivors. Diagnosis and management of cancer can decrease the system performance organsand it would be upgrade by good exercise. Keywords: breast cancer, exercise

Abstract

Stroke is the second most common cause of death worldwide after heart disease. About80% stroke cases are ischemic stroke. One of 4 people with ischemic stroke had cardioembolicstroke. Ninety percent of cardiac emboli obstruct cerebral blood vessels and causedneurological deficit. Cardioembolic stroke may be due to abnormalities in cardiac walls, rhythm, valve, or function. Stroke patients with cardiac abnormalities have poor prognosis. Thisretrospective descriptive study was done in May-June 2017. We collected 103 medical recordsof stroke patients from Department of Neurology, Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital duringJanuary 2015- March 2016. Data regarding sex, age, education level, economic status, andcardiac abnormalities were recorded. Majority of subjects were female (53.4%). The mostfrequent age group was 45-65 years old (49.51%). Most subjects had low educational level(76.7%) and low economic status (77.67%). Among subjects, 41.75% had cardiac rhythmabnormalities, 29.13% had cardiac wall abnormalities, 14.56% had cardiac valveabnormalities, and 14.56% had cardiac function abnormalities. The most common cause ofcardioembolic stroke was atrial fibrillation. Keywords: cardioembolic stroke epidemiology, patient characteristics, cardiac disease

Abstract

Fungus easily grows in the plateau area with warm moist air. The fungus can enter and contaminate mosque rooms, especially on the surface of prayer rugs. If pathogenic fungi grow on prayer rugs, they can increase the health risk of those who come into contact with them. This research aimed to detect and identify pathogenic fungi on prayer rugs of the mosques in Jatinangor campus of Universitas Padjadjaran using laboratoric descriptive method. The data was collected by sampling of dust from the surface of prayer rugs, fungal culturing and mold identification. The existence of pathogenic fungi has been investigated and observed in twenty-eight samples of thirty mosques using simple random sampling. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar was the chosen medium to grow pathogenic fungi. We found fungal growth in all samples with a total of 8 fungal species (Alternaria spp, Aspergillus spp, Candida spp, Fonsecaea spp, Mucor spp, Penicillium spp, Rhizopus spp, Rhodotorula spp) which are opportunistic fungi; however, no pathogenic fungi were found. Keywords : pathogenic fungi, prayer rugs, fungus, Aspergillus spp., Candida spp.

Abstract

Hypertension is commonly found in obesity patients. Age affects the occurrence of hypertension. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of obesity on blood pressure levels in early adulthood males (<35 years) and middle adulthood males (?35 years). This is an observational analytic study using data from medical check-up records of male adult office workers in Bandung. The data was analyzed with Mann-Whitney test (? = 0.05) and Chi-Square to find the odds ratio (OR). The results showed that out of 110 data in medical records, there were 79 (71.82%) obese and 31 (28.18%) non-obese. In early adulthood males (<35 years) there is no significant difference between non-obese with obese in systolic blood pressure (p=0.779) and diastolic blood pressure (p=0.779). In middle adulthood males (?35 years) there was a highly significant difference between non-obese with obese on systolic blood pressure (p=0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (p=0.003). There was a significant relationship between obesity and hypertension (p=0.048) with OR=3.73. In conclusion, in early adulthood males (<35 years) obese does not have an effect on the development of hypertension, while in middle adulthood males, obesity increases the risk of developing hypertension by 3.73 times.
