Abstract

Liver cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver slowly deteriorates and is unable tofunction usually due to chronic, or long lasting, injury. Fibrotic tissue replaces healthy livertissue and partially blocks the flow of blood through the liver. Fibrosis increases liver stiffness.Liver palpation on the early physical examination has been used to assess liver stiffness.Though, palpation has some limitations, such as highly subjective, very operator dependent, and sometimes even impossible to perform. At present, liver biopsy remains the current goldstandard for assessing liver fibrosis, even though the diagnostic accuracy is limited by thespecimen size, invasive procedure, and long duration for getting the result. Elastography is analternative method to liver biopsy in patients with chronic liver disease. Keywords: chronic liver disease, elastography, liver cirrhosis

Abstract

Prophylactic dose antibiotic are indicated in patients having neurosurgical clean operations with implant surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic dose antibiotic in shunt infection. Between 1 October 2009 until 31 September 2011, 102 patients with congenital hydrocephalus who underwent VP shunt surgery. Fifty-one received profilactic antibiotic (ceftriaxone 50-75 mg/kgBW), 30-60 minutes before surgery until 5 days post-operative, and 51 patients received therapeutic antibiotic  (ceftriaxone 50-75 mg/kgBW), 30-60 minutes before surgery until 1 days post-operative. All patient were followed for 1-6 months to evaluate shunt infection. Collected data will be statistically analyzed. The study found that the rate of infection is 17,6% (9 patients of 51 patients) who received therapeutic antibiotic, and 17,6% (9 patients of 51 patients) who received profilactic antibiotic. There is not statistically significant between all group in shunt infection (p=1,000). Others risk factors significantly influence shunt infection are enlargement of the head (p=0,002), length of surgery (p=0,00327), time of surgery (p=0,00077) and nutrition status (p=0,01343). The results of this study indicate that profilactic antibiotic effective to prevent shunt infection in congenital hydrocephalus. Others risk factors significantly influence are enlargement of the head, length of surgery, time of surgery and nutrition status. Keywords:  antibiotic,  prophylactic, infection, VP shunt, congenital hydrocephalus

Abstract

High-intensity physical exercises can increase oxidative stress, causing damage to reproductive system. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mangosteen peel extract on sperm motility and  sperm count of  Swiss Webster mice induced by high-intensity physical exercise. This was a real experimental with complete randomized design. Twenty five  male Swiss Webster mice were divided into five groups (n = 5). Negative control (KN) was without any treatment, positive control (KP) was given  treadmill exercise only, the treatment groups (KM1, KM2, KM3) were given mangosteen peel extract orally 2, 4, 8 mg respectively as well as treadmill exercises. The treadmill exercises was conducted for 35 days. The sperm motility (mm/second) and the sperm count (per mm3) were assessed manually using Improved Neaubauer chamber. The result were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD. The result showed high significant differences of sperm motility and sperm count between KM2 and KP, also between KM2 with  KM1 and  KM3 (p=0,000). The conclusion was mangosteen peel extract improved the sperm motility and sperm count of Swiss Webster mice induced by high-intensity physical exercise with 4 mg as the optimal dose. Keywords: mangosteen peel, sperm motility, sperm count

Abstract

Colorectal cancer has provided a paradigm for the connection between inflammation and cancer. Modulation of intracellular signaling involved in chronic inflammatory response by anti-inflammatory agents represents an important strategy in molecular target-based chemoprevention. The aim of this research is to study the effect of buah merah oil on  IL-6  serum level and histopathology of colon in colitis-associated cancer (CAC) mice model. BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups. The negative control and buah merah control were given aquabidest and buah merah, respectively, without CAC induction. The AOM/DSS control and buah merah treatment were given azoxymethane (AOM) followed by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) to induce CAC. The AOM/DSS control was given aquabidest while the buah merah treatment was given buah merah. Data were analyzed by One-Way ANOVA continued with Tukey-HSD. The result showed that IL-6 level in mice administrated with buah merah was significantly lower than the AOM/DSS control (p=0.000). Histopathological analysis scores  of colon were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis continued with Mann-Whitney. The result showed that histopathological analysis score in buah merah treatment was significantly lower than in the AOM/DSS control (p=0.002). Taken together, buah merah oil lowered IL-6 level and histopathological analysis score of colon in CAC mice model. Keywords: CAC, buah merah oil,  IL-6 level, histopathological  analysis scores of  colon

Abstract

Lymphadenopathy is enlarged lymph nodes caused by infection, inflammation or malignancy. On HIV positive patients, lymphadenopathy is one of the most common clinical manifestations and it is usually persistent. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is an effective cytology technique in determining the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy. This study aimed to describe the cytopathology of lymphadenopathy in HIV positive patients. This is a descriptive study of 21 cases of lymphadenopathy in patients with HIV positive who underwent FNAB examination in Anatomical Pathology Department of Dr.Hasan Sadikin Hospital between 2013-2014. Medical data was taken from the patient medical records including age, sex, location, size and cytopathological diagnosis. Cytopathology overview of FNAB specimens were reassessed by 2 pathologists. In this study, lymphadenopathy in HIV positive patients were mainly found in men (n = 15.71%) with an average age between 20-30 years. The most frequent location was the neck (n = 20.95.2%). The lymph nodes size were found between 0.5-3 cm. Most diagnosis was tuberculous lymphadenitis (n = 15.71%) with the most common cytology feature was granulomatous lymphadenitis (n = 5.33.3%) and suppurative lymphadenitis (n = 5.33.3%). FNAB examination in lymphadenopathy is very helpful to identify the cause of infection in HIV positive patients. Keywords: FNAB, HIV, lymphadenopathy, cytopathology

Abstract

Ameloblastoma is a tumor originating from odontogenic epithelial cells. The tumor islocated in the gray zone between benign and malignant neoplasm. These tumors can occur atany age. Although traditionally divided as solid and cystic ameloblastoma, nearly all showedcystic changes. These tumors are invasive and have a very high recurrence rate. The operativetherapy of choice is radical resection of the affected parts of the jaw, followed byreconstruction. Bridging titanium plate can be used to replace part of lost bone and serves as ameans of reconstruction. Various methods of reconstruction of the mandible can be done byusing a bone graft from the calcaneus, fibula, ribs, scapula, iliac crest, or flap reconstruction. We reported a case of a 18 years old male patient with lump under the tongue that emerged 8years ago, accompanied by eating and speaking difficulty, and shortness of breath. Thediagnosis of mandible ameloblastoma was confirmed by anatomical pathology examination. The patient went through segmental mandibulectomy and free fibular osteoseptocutaneous freeflap with multiple osteotomy. Patients went home with improved condition. Keywords: ameloblastoma, free fibular flap osteoseptocutaneus

Abstract

“Jati Belanda” leaves (Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk.) possesses antidyslipidemia effect and in this study we assessed the effect of "Jati Belanda” leaves ethanol extract in delaying the progression of atherosclerosis in aorta of the rats.Thirty atherosclerosis animal models were divided into six groups, which are three variant dose of “Jati Belanda” leaves (EEDJB 1-2-3), standard control (SC), negative control (NC) and Comparative control/ CC (simvastatin). The parameters measured were the wall thickness and lumen diameter (both in mm), and the amount of foam cells. The result for Kruskal Wallis test showed highly significant differences (p=0.00) of wall thickness Dose2 (0.056 mm) and Dose3 (0.056 mm) compared to NC (0.075 mm) and non-significant compared to CC (0.055 mm). ANOVA result for lumen diameter, p=0.773.  ANOVA result for foam cells amount, p=0.000, Duncan test showed significantly different between EEDJB and NC group. It is concluded that “Jati Belanda” leaves ethanol extract reduced aortic wall thickness and the amount of foam cells, but did not increase lumen diameter on the athersclerotic aorta, and had an equal therapeutic effect compared to simvastatin in delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. Keywords: atherosclerosis, Jati Belanda, wall thickness, lumen diameter, foam cell
