Abstract

Stature estimation is important for forensic identification, particularly in dismembered body. The equation used to estimate the height of a population is not necessarily applicable to other populations (population spesific). This study was conducted to generate the linear regression equation for stature estimation based on foot length and foot breadth on the population in the city of Bandung.  This cross-sectional study is conducted to 908 people, consisting of three age groups (children, adolescents, adults), in the city of Bandung. Sampling was done by multistage sampling. The stature was measured using a stadiometer SECA 213, right foot length (RFL), right foot breadth ( RFB), left foot length (LFL), and left foot breadth (LFB) were measured using sliding calipers. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 21.0 for Windows. There is correlation between height with the RFL, RFB, LFL, and LFB. In contrast to the group of teenagers and adults, there is no boys-girls difference between height, RFL, RFB, LFL, and LFB. 21 regression equation for stature estimation based on the foot size. Stature estimation can be done using the linear regression equation based on the foot length and foot breadth, according to population, gender, and age of the subject being examined. Key words: height estimation, foot length, foot breadth

Abstract

Escherichia coli is the most common bacteria that cause diarrhea. Based on Kurniawati’s research, ethanol extract of tamarind leaves has an antimicrobial effect to Escherichia coli. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial effect using disk diffusion method, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of tamarind leaves infusion against Escherichia coli. This research was done using a real laboratory experimental design with tamarind leaves infusion and Escherichia coli microbes as the research objects. Zones of inhibition were observed using disk diffusion method by putting the tamarind leaves infusion disks on Mueller-Hinton agars with Ampicillin antibiotic for comparison, followed by observing the MIC using macro broth dilution method  and MBC. The result of disk diffusion showed that tamarind leaves infusion had no zone of inhibition, whereas the mean value of the zones of inhibition of ampicillin is 17.2 mm. The MIC of tamarind leaves infusion is 62.5 mg/mL. Average growth of bacteria  for the MBC of tamarind leaves infusion at 125 mg/mL and 62.5 mg/mL concentration are 13 CFU/mL and >300 CFU/mL. It can be concluded that tamarind leaves infusion has antimicrobial activity effect against E.coli and that effect is bacteriostatic. Keywords: Tamarindus indica Linn, Escherichia coli, MIC, MBC

Abstract

Menstruation is the release of the endometrium with bleeding every month, except during pregnancy. Before or during menstruation, a woman may experience stiffness or abdominal cramps, mood fluctuations and other physical and psychological disorders, which is termed as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The aim of this research is to observe and value the effect of dark chocolate on clinical symptoms of PMS. This research is an experimental prospective, using experimental design with one group pre and post test. Subjects were 30 women aged 18-22 years. Every day for 2 weeks before menstruation period, subjects took 20 gram of dark chocolate, then were asked to answer questionaire. The data measured is the score as well as individual PMS symptoms before and after eating dark chocolate, was analyzed using a nonparametric Wilcoxon test, followed by McNemar chi square with α=0.05. A highly significant decrease was found in anxiety symptoms, whereas statistically significant reduction was found in fatigue or feeling tired, cramps abdominal, bloating, diarrhea, headache, back pain, change in appetite, muscle or joint pain, and problems in concentration. But the symptom of acne complaint was increased from 73.3% to 76.7%. Consumption of dark chocolate reduces premenstrual syndrome scores on women aged 18-22 years. Keywords: dark chocolate, premenstrual syndrome

Abstract

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease. Low levels of adiponectin resulted in an increased free estrogen levels and the inability to inhibit angiogenesis and the inflammatory process resulting in the development of increasingly severe endometriosis. This study is aimed to determine the differences in serum adiponectin levels in patient with nonendometriotic cyst with endometriosis cyst and its relationship with endometriosis stages. This is an analytical comparative study with cross-sectional method in group of women with endometriotic cyst (n=25) and women with non-endometriotic cysts (n=25), performed either laparoscopic or laparotomy surgery. The serum levels of adiponectin in both groups then compared with statistical analysis. The results showed there were no significant differences (p>0,05) on the characteristics of the study subjects in terms of age (p=0.994) and BMI (p=0.27). Significant differences of adiponectin levels were found between endometriotic patient group (mean=3.91) and nonendometriotic patients group (mean=8.59). There were no significant differences of adiponectin level in stages III endometriosis (mean = 4.24) and stage IV endometriosis (mean = 3.54).It is concluded that serum adiponectin levels in patients with endometriosis is lower than patient with non-endometriotic cyst. There is no relationship between adiponectin levels with endometriosis stage. Keywords: adiponectin, endometriotic cyst, non-endometriotic cyst, endometriosis stage

Abstract

The most common malignancy of testis is seminoma with prognosis that is not always good because of high recurrence rate and death cases. Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) is a glycoprotein adhesion molecules which plays a role in tumor cell invasion and metastasis as evidenced by immunohistochemistry method in several types of tumor cells and tissue that shows the correlation to the clinical progessivity. This study was conducted by observational descriptive analytics with each seven cases of seminoma nonrecurrences and recurrences diagnosed histopathologically from Dr.Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Advent Hospital and St.Borromeus Hospital in Bandung. This study shows that immunoexpression of estrogen receptor beta is not higher in testicular seminoma recurrence compared with nonreccurence. There was no higher imunoexpression of EMMPRIN receptor on testicular seminoma recurrence compared with nonrecurrence; besides, there was no relationship between immunoexspression of estrogen receptor beta and EMMPRIN in testicular seminoma nonrecurrence and recurrence. In conclusion, immunoexpression estrogen receptor beta expressed in all testicular seminoma, so that the patient could be given an alternative therapy and immunoexspression EMMPRIN, cannot be used to predict a recurrence in patients with seminoma who has received complete therapy.                                                        Keywords: EMMPRIN, Estrogen Receptor Beta, Seminoma Testis nonrecurrence and recurrence
