This study discusses the social dynamics of a kampong in Batavia during XVIII to XIX centuries. Pekojan has already emerged as the center of commerce for Arabs and Muslim Indians community since the 16th century. By the eighteenth century, many Arab immigrants from Hadramawt (Southern Yemen) settled here. Its initial landscape can be traced by the theory of the coming of Islam in the Archipelago. One of the theories says that it was driven by international trade by the Arabs, which also carried Islam along with them. The Hadramis went through the naval journey passing the Indian Ocean to the Malaka Strait. They stopped over in Singapore then went on to Batavia, especially Pekojan. This study found Pekojan became a place where Arab culture and ideas were constructed yet negotiated within a local context. There prominent ulamas, merchants, writers, educators, the initiators of independence, the benefactors, and artists socialized under close racial surveillance of the Dutch East Indies government.

The study evaluated users’ satisfaction with the reference services of federal university libraries in southeastern Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and questionnaire served as an instrument for data collection. Drawing from a population of 20,570, a questionnaire was administered to 394 undergraduate library users of which 351 were completed and found useful for data analysis. The findings revealed that users were satisfied with library reference services except those they are not familiar with and none of the categories of reference services was rated very high. Most library users are not familiar with translation service, internet service, and e-mail service along with library OPAC. Reference librarians have a good customer relationship with the users, even though they are yet to fortify their presence in an online environment. Sequential to the above unearthing, recommendations were given that reference librarians should adopt public relation technique in relating to users and other stakeholders of the library. More so, awareness of reference services should be created through library publicity and marketing of library services among the community of users. The recommendation was also given that the reference librarian should be ICT compliance to be able to perform excellently in an online environment.

Zakat is the third of the five pillars of Islamic faith, relating to wealth and welfare of the society that helps to close the gap between the poor and the rich. The efficient and systematic zakat management is able to propel it’s potential as an instrument of human developments especially among Muslims. The optimum utilization of zakat funds is essential to improving the quality and potential of every Muslim. In Malaysia, zakat is administrated by the Islamic Religious Council (IRC) in every state. The IRC is responsible for determining the beneficiary's qualification and the type of relief that is appropriate based on the background of each recipient so that the relief can be utilized to fulfill their needs. This study aims to assess the potential of zakat in developing the quality of Muslims in Malaysia by highlighting the practice of each IRC in distributing relief to each qualified zakat recipient. The distribution statistics and the form of programs provided by the IRC were analyzed descriptively to see the potential of zakat itself practically in improving the quality of Muslims. The study found that the IRC has provided various programs aimed at improving the quality of asnaf through equitable distribution of economics, social welfare distribution, human capital production and upgrading of education. Thus, every Muslim, especially zakat payers, should take the opportunity to equally engage with the IRC to ensure that zakat funds can be optimized for the developments of Muslims in Malaysia.

Massive discussion has been done related to the translation strategy, including the proper name. This study discussed the types of a proper name and the translation strategy of a proper name in an English-Indonesian Novel Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret. The data will be presented qualitatively by using Peter Newmark and Lincoln Fernandes theories. Six data are frequently typed into addressing name, four are typed as a geographical place, and one as an object name. Moreover, the most strategies used to engage the equivalence effect are copy strategy with seven data, rendition strategy with three data, and re-creation strategy with one datum. Therefore, the copy strategy can be a solution to deliver proper names into TL because it preserves the proper name and introduces the foreign name of foreign culture to the target language and target culture. Moreover, if a proper name has its equivalence meaning in TL, it might be translated by rendition strategy.

I argue that if we recognize the roots of violence in modern social theories, we may have at least a picture of how to solve the problem of violence for both Islam and modernity. I use the term “violence” to refer to an idea or an action that explicitly endorses revolt or physical conflict in attaining a goal. I will review fourteen social theories of the colonial and post-colonial period from the beginning to the end of the Twentieth Century, as presented by Charles Lemert in his book, Social Theory: The Multicultural & Classic Readings (1993). I refer my understanding of violence and its solutions for Islam and modernity on my interpretation of the types of abuse that I took from Lemert’s book. I discuss my argument in the following subtitles. The first subtitle is an introduction to capitalism as the answer to Islam and modernity. The second item is my finding of the notion of violence as a concept that is originated in the Western social theories of the colonial period. The third point is the degree to which I find that the roots of violence are also originated in the Western social methods of the post-colonial period. The fourth point of my article conveys the term “violence” used in linguistics by two French philosophers: Jacques Derrida and Michelle Foucault. The fifth element concludes this article by strengthening the above-mentioned assumption.

This study aims to describe the cultural stereotypes between American and Pakistani that are portrayed in The Big Sick (2017) movie. This study uses a qualitative method with a Cultural Studies approach. The analysis is done by looking at the characteristics of American and Pakistani characters by using the theory of characterization from Boggs and the theory of representation by Stuart Hall to present the cultural stereotype issues that appear in the movie (Hall, 1997). The cultural stereotype of the American and Pakistani culture is presented by some American characters (Emily and her family) and some Pakistani characters (Kumail and his family) of The Big Sick movie. The result of the study shows that the characteristics of Pakistani characters are religious and deceitful, while the characteristics of American characters are smart and straightforward. Furthermore, through the analysis of the characters’ characteristics, the writers found the cultural stereotype in the movie. Pakistani characters are associated with conservatism and close-mindedness. On the contrary, American characters are associated with modernism and open-mindedness. It can be concluded that in this movie, American culture is depicted as more positive than Pakistani.

This article discusses the identity of the main characters; Rehana, Leela, and Usha in Lipstick Under My Burkha film released in 2017. The main objectives of this research are to explore how four major characters negotiate the desire of their lives with the patriarchy and social norms that they should obey. This study employs qualitative research method with a cultural approach using the technique of library research. The text is analyzed by using identity theory by Stuart Hall to interpret how women reach their freedom in life. This study not only analyzes the characters of women who wear a burkha but also analyzes all of the four major characters in this film because the main point of this film is about women's dream that cannot be conveyed. The result shows that the four women characters in this film are trying to reach their dream; freedom for woman. Freedom to dress as she wishes refers to Rehana, a freedom to be loved refers to Shireen, freedom to choose a life partner refers to Leela and freedom to do what they want refers to Usha. The attitude and behavior of the four major characters in this film are limited by the patriarchy (manpower) and the social norms. The patriarchy in this film refers to Rehana and Shireen’s life because there are men power represented by the father figure in Rehana’s life and husband figure in Shireen's life. Then, the social norms appear in Leela and Usha’s lifeasboth of them do immoral acts and make them feel ashame.

The management of university libraries in Indonesia has been intervened from foreign institutions through a donation of library materials which seem for the benefit of the academic community, but it is for the benefit of the donors. Academicians, especially the young generation, are a target of donation whether as the readers of books donated to the University or as the audience of programs or activities funded by donor agencies. Based on the background, it is found how the library becomes an arena for the contestation of various interests through some “corners” build inside the University Libraries. Using the concepts introduced by Pierre Bourdieu such as arena and capitals. Supported by Vincent Mosco’s theory of political economy of communication as the tools of analysis, this research reveals how the agents involved in the management of the “Corner” use the library as an "arena" to achieve their benefits. The data obtained were grouped based on the sub-theme of types capital, commodification, specialization and structuration Using phenomenological approach, it is found that Corners in the university Libraries are used as an arena of contestation of agents involved in governance to foster capital. Contestation in this study illustrates the phenomenon of actors involved in the management of Corner into the dominant-subordinate relationship.

The last decades, people can calculate other people’s worth only through what they are wearing or their appearances. It makes the phenomenon of commodification and consumerism emerges in the society. This phenomenon might not harm the bourgeoisie, but it is harming the work class. This article discusses how consumerism harm the workers, meanwhile they are not realizing this. This phenomenon is clearly depicted by two main characters namely Phoebe and Gary in Five Star Billionaire, a novel by Tash Aw created in 2013. The portrayal of commodification can be seen through the action of characters in seeing the object or the persons base on exchange and sign-exchange value. This research used qualitative method with Marxist theory about consumerism. The results show that Phoebe and Gary are treated as commodity that have exchange value. Next, Phoebe is used her fake-branded stuff to give other people impression. Last, Phoebe is using Walter Chao to make she lives in luxury. How Phoebe is commodifying her stuffs leads her to follow the ideology of consumerism.
