This essay is an exploration of historical writings of women in the Indonesian context. Through a short fragment of Nie Hiang Nio, this essay discusses the challenges and opportunities of using careful speculation and literary techniques as a method of writing the history of unknown women. An exploration of this method helps historians to find a creative solution in dealing with the stories of ordinary women. Without falling into fiction, a literary style of women history can open more conversations about the past and can become one way of feminist practices in writing history, of which silences can be embraced through historical imagination and bravery to ask.

This study aims to unpack the complex representation of ideology and discourses of colonialism, race, and gender. Using social semiotic as a framework, this research investigates the meaning behind the text and images in an official history textbook published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC). The images were counted and categorized before they were analyzed using multimodal discourse analysis. In term of visual design and the layout of the pages in the textbook, there is ample evidence that events and figures were depicted differently. This study also indicates a tendency of male domination in a history textbook, particularly the indigenous males. Meanwhile, the indigenous females were given a stage in the history textbook even though it is limited.

Relief is a sculpture on a building or stone that describes a message or event that occurred at that time. In addition to reliefs, depictions of human life during the Hindhu-Buddhist period are found in inscriptions and also records of foreigners visiting the archipelago. One side of life depicted in these three sources is the hunting of animals. Then how are the three historical sources in this classical period able to provide a visualization of life so that they can be translated as historical sources. These three sources complement each other about the visualization of hunting, scratches on the reliefs of Borobudur Temple provide a visual picture, and the inscriptions will explain the meaning and terms of hunting, and finally the more foreign news about the types of animals being traded. These historical sources are examined using the Archaeological approach to be a historiography.

This study attempts to describe the visualization of Komodo dragons based on the records of expedition, scientific journals, newspapers, and magazines in the period 1912-1939. The Komodo dragon has been so popular since P.A. Ouwens first published a scientific journal about Komodo dragons in 1912. Komodo is increasingly famous globally after Douglas Burden's expedition in 1926. Komodo is described as an exotic wildness and imagination of prehistoric. This made the explorer and collector hunt Komodo dragons to serve as the museum's collection and the inhabitants of the zoo in the Indies, Europe, and America. Komodo dragons remain a target for hunting, even after the Dutch East Indies Government enacted regulations on protecting Komodo dragons in 1931.

The development of women's history must continue to be improved due to the lack of availability of sources that record women's roles in Indonesian history. Faced with that condition, the oral history method is present as an alternative source to answer the shortage of these sources. Recognizing the importance of oral history, the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) is a national archival institution that maintains and preserves authentic sources in the form of archives from various mediums and carries out oral history interviews to complete and fill in the gaps of certain events that have occurred in Indonesia. the past. Regarding women's progress, ANRI's oral history interview with the theme of the Relatives of the Kingdom of the Nusantara shows the role of women in cultural preservation. ANRI interviewed three female sources from three different kingdoms, namely G.R.Ay. Retno Rosati Kadarisman Notohadiningrat from Mangkunegaran, GKR Koes Murtiyah Wandansari from Surakarta, and Anak Agung Ayu Dewi Girindra Wardani from Karangasem. This article discusses how ANRI's oral history activities led to the role of women in the Kingdom of the Nusantara in cultural preservation so that it can be an alternative source as a complement to the ANRI archive treasures that are useful to be used today and in the future. Keywords: Oral History, Women of the Kingdom of the Nusantara, Cultural Preservation
