Abstract

In Indonesian history, volcanic disasters are both disastrous and blessing. In the short term it becomes disastrous when the impact causes massive damage and takes many casualties. But in the long term it can becomes blessings because the ashes from volcanic eruptions has the potential to fertilize the soil. Volcanic disasters as happened in several parts of Dutch East Indies regions that were traversed by the "ring of fire" have attracted the attention of scholars, such as botanists Verbeek (1886), Treub (1888), Hemsley (1888 & 1903), Valeton (1905), Ernst (1907), Backer (1929); volcanologist ter Braake (1945); and agronomist Mohr (1945) in examining soil conditions post-eruption which is good to growth of various vegetations. From their research it was concluded that the regions with the highest number of active volcanoes tend to have a high level of soil fertility. This article discusses the traces of scientific researchs on the vegetation condition after eruption of Krakatoa (1883) and how the research results became guidance for the botanical study in Dutch East Indies on the last of 19th century until the first half of 20th century.

He was a captain and merchant from Minangkabau who wrote his autobiography when he turned 73 in 1914. The story of his original life was handwritten in Minangkabau language using Arabic-Malay letters (or bald Arabic letters) of Minangkabau (Pariaman) coastal dialect. In the 1920s, his grandson, Soetan Mahmoed (S.M) Latif began copying the manuscript into Latin letters in the form of stencils. The literacy work (transliteration) could only be completed in 1933 and printed in limited numbers in Bandung in 1933, 1965 and 1975 to be distributed to members of Moehammad Saleh family. From the biography, it is obtained an overview of the events of the earthquake that occurred, especially on Telo Island and its surroundings. When the earthquake struck, all residents jumped out of their homes. The earthquake shaking was very hard and lasted a little longer, orced the locals to flee into the hill. Abstract

Abstracts This study attempts to question the existence of animals in around Kratatau’s Eruption 1883. Narratives about animals actually often appear in post-disaster reports. In a disaster, animal behaviour is usually mentioned as marker of disaster. Although the truth is still questionable until now. In the disaster of 1883, Simon Winchester (2006) explained about some strange of animal behaviour before the eruption. This was also noted by several witnesses such as Rogier Verbeek and R.A. van Sandick. In addition, some reports mentioned the waves killed many livestock, fields, and plants. The continued impact of Krakatau’s eruption caused deforestation, population movements and changes of the agricultural system in South-Banten. Finally, a few years after eruption the tiger plague attacked many people in the region.
