Abstract

This article discusses climate change in the Malacca Strait, both recorded in official government records and the Malay literary tradition. The sea that connects the Pacific Ocean to the Indies are indeed often experiencing the conjuncture, a situation where the weather can change suddenly. This natural phenomenon in turn makes all shipping and voyage activities in the Straits of Malacca, which is actually not quite large in scope, full of risk. In the report, the meteorological record and the strands of imagination in Malay literary works, at least, it seems that navigating the strait is not as easy as imagined, especially in the 1850-1885, years where shipping technology and climatology were not as sophisticated as this. The study also shows how sunspots affect changes in weather in the Malacca Strait.

Abstract

This paper attempts to narrate Achinese invasions of Malacca according to Portuguese sources. The use of various perspectives should be devised in order to re-narrate a specific historical episode. In the context of the Achinese invasion of Portuguese Malacca, Indonesian historians merely depend on the availability of the local and Dutch sources. The rich information, meanwhile, is recorded in bulk of Portuguese manuscripts. The local sources are silent related to all Achinese failures. The quiet locals should be considered in their spirit of the age that the Achinese chronicles are written to praise the glorious king and the success of the royal expansion. Therefore, the Achinese chronicles are in brief to mention the invasion of Malacca. The use of Portuguese sources should be promoted, but the existence of other sources remains considered. If the Portuguese sources could direct the historians to narrate the historical episode in detail, therefore, the other sources could be a corresponding source and a reference to verify the related data.

Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on the process of rationalizing health in Java with the central issue of dukun bayi or traditional birth attendants from the colonial era to the present day. This research tries to explain how to integrate dukun bayi into modern medicine carried out by the Dutch colonial government and continued by the Indonesian government after independence. In Java since 1851, there has been an official attempt by the government to realize training for dukun bayi by establishing a training center for native midwives. Similar efforts were then continued after Indonesia’s independence through the training conducted by the Department of Health assisted by the local health center. The dukun bayi played a significant role at the beginning of giving birth process but also has a powerful magical element; however, their role in these present days is reduced to being a baby masseur.

Abstract

Noted biographers of the Indonesian nationalist Tan Malaka (1897-1949) such as Helen Jarvis and Harry Poeze have described his sojourn in China from 1928 to 1932 as a lacuna since there is a dearth of direct information about his political activity. The gap is evident in his autobiography Dari Penjara ke Penjara, which Poeze claims is a deliberate attempt to cover his reconciliation with the Comintern. Three pieces of correspondence from the Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon Papers located at the National Library of the Philippines helps to shed some light about Tan Malaka’s activity. The letters reveal that at least around April and May 1928, Tan Malaka made attempts through his Filipino contacts to re-establish direct correspondence with Quezon, who sympathized with him during the deportation proceedings. In his main letter, Malaka offers his support for Quezon’s leadership in the aftermath of the latter’s opposition against the recently-deceased American Governor-General Leonard Wood. He then presents an analysis and vision for a pan-Malayan union and explains how this can fit in with the nationalist sentiments of the colonized peoples. However, it is also notable that the ideas expressed in this communication appear to have been motivated and overshadowed by a desire to enlist Quezon’s support for his re-entry to the Philippines.
