Abstract

Malocclusion is very closely related to the disharmony of mesiodistaltooth-width with dental arches. It is important to know the mesiodistaltooth widths before establishing the diagnosis and planning oforthodontic treatment. The ultimate goal of orthodontic treatment isfacialesthetic, which is supported by a balanced soft tissue profile. The aim ofthis cross sectional study was to investigate the correlation betweenmesiodistal tooth widths with the convexity of soft tissue profile. Theresult of the study can be used as a reference and guidance inestablishing orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The numberof sample was 50 (18 males and 32 females), aged 18-27 years old.Criteria for sample selection comprised absence of interproximalcaries/filling, no tooth deformity, aged over 17 years, never undergoorthodontic treatment, the presence of teeth from the right first molarthrough the left first molar, both upper and lower, Buginese orMakassarese people, and Class I Angle malocclusion. Tooth sizemeasurements were performed on study models by using slidingcaliper. The photo of each subject was taken cephalometrically. Theangular measurement was performed on cephalogram, using Subtelny'sanalysis. The soft tissue convexity degree was represented by N-SnPog.The data was processed using SPSS program and tested byindependent t-test and correlation. It can be concluded that the meanvalue of mesiodistal width on males was greater that those on females(p<0.05), the mean of facial convexity degree on males (159.05°) wassmaller than those on females (162.77°), which was different significantly (p<0.05), and there was a very weak correlation (r<0.25) oralmost no correlation between mesiodistal tooth-width and the degree ofsoft tissue facial profile, and it was not significant statistically (p>0.05).

Abstract

In the daily work, dentists are required to performprecision in relatively small treatment areas, inside the mouth. We oftenfind a dentist who does his work with an awkward position in a relatively long time. Musculoskeletal disorders oftenoccur as a result of less ergonomic body position while working which occurs for a long time and repeatedly. The aim ofthis descriptive observational study was to determine the application of ergonomic posture by Hasanuddin Universityclinical dental student during treatment procedures. The ergonomic posture during treatment measures assessed by directobservation on 78 clinical students of Faculty of Dentistry using test of visual perception (TVP) which consists of 8 items. This study showed that the most ergonomic posture often overlooked when performing treatment procedures is backposition performed by 51 respondents (65.4%). Positioning the feet in such a way that the angle between the thigh and calf form the angle of 110º or more is the most rarely overlooked, just 19 respondents (24.4%). In this study, 39respondents (50%)were categorized as sufficient, which means50% of ergonomic stance/posture has been applied. It wasconcluded that ergonomic posture applied by clinical dental students of Hasanuddin University during treatmentprocedure was categorized as adequate.

Abstract

Tooth extraction is a simple procedure that is frequently performed in the practice of dentistry. Bleeding is a common complications of tooth extraction. There are several materials or methods that may be used to control the bleeding. To minimize side effect, it might need natural ingredients as a replacement. Tannin and flavonoid is a compounds that can reduce bleeding time. Green tea and black tea are plants that have these compounds with different concentrations. Aims of this study is to determine the differences in the effectiveness of water steeping green tea leaves and black tea leaves as a hemostasis effect on wound cut-tail mice (Mus musculus). This is an experimental research with study design post-test only control group design. Samples were 30 male mice which divided into three groups. One negative control group (aquadest) and two treatment group (green tea and black tea). Mice that match the criteria is cutted the tail equal to 3 mm from the tip of the tail, then the ingredients is applied to the wound. Blood is dripped on absorbent paper until bleeding stop and data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis. There are significant differences between negative control group and the treatment group. In the treatment groups there were significant differences in the bleeding time between green tea group and black tea group. As a conclusion, water steeping from green tea leaves have a better effect than black leaves tea as hemostasis on wound cut-tail mice.

Abstract

There are several causal possibilities developing dimensional changes on impressionsuch as type of impression materials used, impression taking technique, bulk ofimpression material or size of impression tray. In this study investigation was done onthe size of impression material used to elucidate the possibilities role of impressionmaterial in gaining dimensional changes of impression. Rectangle shape alginateimpressions were made in 29.57 mm length, 19.45 mm width and 9.67 mm thicknessmold of metal master die covered by glass plate and dimensional changes aremeasured on alginate impression itself. Then data were analyzed with T-test (pairedsamples test)to compare dimension changing between alginat height anddimension changing on length and width. Measured results show the dimensionalchanges occur 3.16% ± 0.63% on length side, 3.35% ± 0.42% on width side and10.87% ± 1.01% on thickness side, respectively. There are significantly differences ofdimensional changes on thick ness side covered by glass plate compared withdimensional changes on length and width sides surrounding by metal of master die.

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common inflammatory oral disease. The etiology remains unclear; howeversome studies and case reports showed any association between estradiol and progesteron level in this disease. The aimof this article is to evaluate estradiol and progesteron level in RAS subjects. Purposive sampling was used in this studywith 15 total subjects. Phase of luteal and ulcer reccurence characteristic are based on quisioner data. Estradiol andprogesterone level is examined by vena serum. Only one sample (6.7%)showed higher estradiol level than normal andthe rest (93.3%) are in normal level. Contrastly, 3 samples (20%)were in normal for progesterone level, while theothers, 12 samples (80%)were in low level. Estradiol level in RAS subjects tend to normal range, while progesteronelevels tend to be low

Abstract

Objective: Indonesia has many kinds of useful herbs, which are often used as species such as chili, pepper or cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L). Previous study showed topical capsaicin can be used as a therapy to cure pain due to inflammation. Small concentrations of capsaicin can attenuate cytokines in the inflammatory process. Capsaicin studies in animal model showed activation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid-1. Capsaicin can decrease various cytokines such as IL-6, IL-12, IL-1β, and increase IL-10. Capsaicin is a natural agonist for transient receptor potential vanilloid-1. The aim of this study is to prove the effect of capsaicin on transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 expression and TNF-α and TLR-4 toward pain.Material and Methods: An experimental laboratory research used animal model Wistar male rats (Rattus novegicus) induced with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans serotype b and green chili extract (Capsicum frutescens L.) with a dose of 0.0912 mg/kg/day was applied to surface of the gingiva on maxillary first molar for 7 days. An immunohistochemical examination was conducted to see the density of transient receptor potential vanilloid-1, and the expression of TLR-4 and IL-1β in the mucosal tissues of the oral cavity. Results: There were significant differences in the applications of Capsicum frutescens L. with increasing of TRPV ligand-1 and IL-1β (p < 0.05), while the TLR-4 (p > 0.05) showed a significant difference to TRPV-1 and IL-1β. There is no significant difference to TLR-4.Conclusion: Capsaicin can increase TRPV-1 and decrease IL-1β but did not affect the TLR-4. Capsaicin can be used to decrease pain and accelerate healing process in periodontitis.

Abstract

Caries remains a major challenge for public health, and is a major problem for children. Based on 2007 Basic HealthResearch, in South Sulawesi, the prevalence of oral health problems of 5-14-year-old children was 42.2% and theprevalence of active caries on children aged 12 years was 39%. This study aims to describe the severity of untreatedcaries at 6, 9 and 12 years old, using pathfinder survey, samples are 6, 9 and 12 years old, respectively 450 children,in three districts of Pinrang, South Sulawesi. Index of PUFA/pufa was used to assess the severity of untreated caries. This index records the involvement of pulp (P/p), ulceration (U/u) of oral mucosa due to tooth fragment, fistula (F/f)and abscess (A/a). The results showed that most found caries involve the pulp exposure both in the permanent (P) anddeciduous (p) on the entire sample. Overall caries prevalence on 6-year-old is 62% with the highest component ofdental caries and there are 8 permanent teeth with caries with pulp involvement. For ages 9 years 65.8% with a 10% permanent dental caries and 12 years old is the highest prevalence of caries in permanent teeth, which is 25.3%. It isconcluded that 9-year-old children in the mixed dental period showed severe caries.
