Abstract

The Qur'an and the Sahih Hadith interwave each other. Both correspond and there is no contradiction between the two for both are part of God's revelation toward Prophet Muhammad. Therefore, they are referred as sacred texts to seek guidance from. According to Ibn Hazm (d.456 AH), the sacred text must be understood textually. He treated the text as it is in the Qur'an and Sunna denoting the law of something. It is unacceptable for him to use majaz (metaphorical interpretation) except a famous majaz evidenced by other texts, ijma', sensory elements, or the language by which the text is derived. Because of this textual tendency, the Sunna / Hadith that has the power of hujjah (a valid argument) is only in the form of his sunnah qauliyyah (stated sunnah). Meanwhile, his sunnah fi'liyyah (performed sunnah) can not be used as hujjah unless it correlates with the command written in the Qur'an and Sunnah (qauliyah). The sunnah taqririyyah (confirmed sunnah), according to Ibn Hazm, is only addressed to mubah (lawful) category and has no binding legal provisions.

Abstract

Syi’ir Tanpa Waton, a work of KH Mohammad Nizam As-shofa, is a sufi poem. It is a cultural endeavor to response the modern problems of Muslims who easily judge others infidels without realizing their own infidelity. This poem is used as a closing recitation of Reboan Agung (Islamic regular study forum of Muslim conducted in every Wednesday night learning the book of Jamī’ al-uṣul fi al-uliyā’ the work of Shaykh Ahmad Dhiya 'uddin Musthofa Al-Kamisykhonawi) and the book of Al-Fatḥurrabbani wa al-Faiḍurrahmani the work of Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani. The forum took place at Islamic boarding school of Ahlus-Shofa Wal Wafa Sidoarjo, East Java. This research is inspired by spiritual emptiness caused by the modernization and the shallow understanding of Islamic teachings. Islam is studied and practiced at the level of shari'a without deepening it into higher stages of Sufism i.e. tariqa, haqiqa and even marifa. This study employs content analysis and qualitative approach aims at analyzing the message or moral values contained in the literature. Then, I classifies basic thoughts into some themes and selects these themes to find the central idea of the text. Substantively, the verses were structurely written ranging from understanding comprehensively the teachings of Islam, teachings self-awareness, the teachings of social piety (humanism) and the teachings of Sufism namely suluk practice. Suluk in Syi’ir Tanpa Waton is devided into two parts, namely: small suluk (khalwat fi al-khalwat) and big suluk (khalwat fi al-jalwat). Meanwhile, suluk nafs/soul purification and suluk Qalb/heart purification are called takhalli/purgativa. In addition to that, sirr emptying (tahalli/contemplative) followed by soul enlightening (Tajalli/Illuminativa) is a chain of process or stages that should be passed in the form of small and big suluk which take place in suluk Qalb (takhalli/purgativa) and sirr emptying (tahalli/contemplative). Suluk in the present context is urgently needed for peaceful soul to face negative effects of modernization and spiritual crisis of modern human by doing seclusion physically and mentally (qalb/jasad) from the crowd of human life. Seclusion is a symbol of taqarrub ilallāh by self-equipping with spiritual values to depend on nothing but Allah. This process will consruct oneself to be calm, patient, active, productive, firmly independent, consistent, having integrity and good personality

Abstract

The ‘doctrine of the seven grades’ or martabat tujuh is a popular Sufi teaching. It originated in early seventeenth-century India and was later introduced in Aceh and gained considerable popularity among the Malay Sufis. Despite its wide acceptance in Sufi circles, martabat tujuh seems incompatible with Islam and its strict belief in a transcendent God. The purpose of this article is to examine the history of the Tuḥfa al-Mursala as the source text of this doctrine and to establish its authenticity as a legitimate source of Sufi thought in Southeast Asia. Based on detailed document analysis, the study found that its original purpose was to correct misconceptions of Ibn ʿArabī’s waḥdat al-wujūd. The text is attributed to Fadlullah al-Burhanpuri, an eminent Sufi scholar living in the seventeenth century. The Tuḥfa al-Mursala and its commentaries are an important source for the study of Sufi thought in the archipelago and the doctrine of martabat tujuh.

Abstract

Heart (qalb) has a higher function than do other sensory organs such as eyes and ears have because heart is the executing part of the soul that changes human spiritual potentiality into actuality (Ansari, 2003). Spiritual actuality of heart such as mukasyafah is possible when it has achieved cleanliness and clarity. Sufism as a spiritual path offers several steps to clean and purify heart. This study explores the spiritual path that has been experienced by a grave digger in the form of mukasyafah towards the sound of complaints and pain from a grave. The data of this essay was gained from interviews with a grave digger in Kediri, East Java. This study concludes that the spiritual path traversed by the grave digger is, among other things, the path of heart which is exercised by the subject by giving help, alleviating sufferings of others, praying for the deceased, and being gentle towards his fellow people. The path of reason is passed by the subject by doing what he obtained from his studying Islam. The path of group is done by having good relations with others. While the path of service is carried out by the subject by giving emphaty to other people who are experiencing distress, giving hands to those who ask for help and giving alms to those in need. The way of dhikr is done by always remembering Allah, realizing and believing in Allah as the provider of the provision and who regulates one's sustenance and being honest in work expecting God’s blessing.

Abstract

This paper studies the thought of the Persian mystic Junayd al-Baghdadī, a prominent figure in the early development of Sufism (taṣawwuf). This study attempts to determine the relationship between Sufism and Islam and test the popular assumption that Sufi ideas and practices corrupt the original Islamic teachings and thus constitute innovation (bidʿa). This quantitative study focuses on the Rasāʿil Junayd (Epistles of Junayd) as the primary source of data and concludes that Sufism is not only based on authentic Islamic teachings but represents the spiritual core of Islam. Junayd al-Baghdadī formulated its three central concepts of the covenant (mīthāq), annihilation (fanāʾ), and unification (tawḥīd). He successfully reconciled the spiritual concepts of taṣawwuf and the legal concepts of fiqh and thus helped to free Sufism from the stigma of heresy and integrated it into mainstream Islam.

Abstract

As a universal religion, Islam regulates all aspects of life. As one of aspects in Islam, tasawwuf/Sufism invites people to be guardians for environmental preservation since nature is part of God’s creatures. To some extent, the teachings of Sufism are mainly about ethic (adab). This ethic can be either vertical to God or horizontal to all God’s creatures including nature and environment. Ibn Arabi in this regard is an influential character in Sufism which his thoughts gave a lot of influence on the development of the world of Sufism in General. Among his thoughts is about the unity of God with the universe. The question is, how Ibn Arabi’s thought could give an impact in the context of the preservation of the environment. This research finds amd formulates some aspect of Sufism that can contribute to encourage people in dealing with environmental preservation. It is based on attitude or akhlak theologically.

First, how is the architectural construction of art? Second, how is its philosophy in terms of the architecture and ornamentation in a mosque? Third, how are types of calligraphy which belong to mosques in the archipelago? To answer these questions, the author uses historical and semiotic approach. The research is a literature study. Abstract

The Qur’an carries many references to the created world being subjected to divine testing. It, therefore, seems obvious to ask whether the COVID pandemic that has caused so much suffering across the world and continues to ravage communities represents a test by God for faithful believers. Tests can be daunting experiences, causing apprehension and fear. To what extent should faithful believers regard the COVID pandemic as a fearful, traumatic experience? On the other hand, how can believers find ways to focus on a sense of hope in the midst of the current troubles? This paper will initially consider a range of responses to the COVID pandemic by religious leaders and commentators. It will then draw out Qur’an verses referred to in these responses and will engage with these verses through the lens of several Sufi commentaries, in a search for layered meanings below a surface reading of the verses concerned.
