Abstract

Background: High-fat diet (HFD) can lead to a low-grade inflammatory state in the body called meta-inflammation. Propolis and Vitamin E are proven to act as antiinflamatories by inhibiting the NF-Kβ pathway, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and scavenging free radicals. TNF-α is a biomarker for the analysis of acute pro-inflammatory cytokines. This study aimed to determine the effect of propolis extract and vitamin E on TNF-α responses in HFD-induced rats.Materials and methods: A randomized controlled trial with post-test only with control group design. Thirty Wistar rats were acclimatized for 7 days, prior to randomization into five groups that are C group (standard diet), T1 group (HFD 2 mL of quail eggs/day),  T2 group (HFD + vitamin E 12mg /200 g of rat BW/day),  T3 group (HFD + propolis extract 36 mg /200 g of rat BW/day), and T4 group (HFD + vitamin E 6 mg/200 g of rat BW/day + propolis extract 18 mg/200 g of rat BW/day).  All intervention were administered orally for 14 days. TNF-α were measured from periorbital blood sample on day 15th using ELISA.Results: TNF-α highest levels was found in HFD group (T1) on 90.53±10.48 ng/L and the lowest was found in propolis group (T3) on 68.21±3.97 ng/L. Combination group (T4) has TNF-α levels on 68.46±15.39ng/L. One way ANOVA showed significant differentiation p<0.05.Conclusion: Propolis extract and vitamin E significantly reduced TNF-α levels on HFD induced rats, either in single form or in combination. Abstract

Background: Xerosis leading to chronic pruritus and increased inflammation. Current treatment like urea, may induce itching, burning and stinging sensations in some patients. Kombucha extract exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing properties; however, evidence on the effects of green tea kombucha extract cream on IL-10 and EGF in xerosis remains limited. This study investigates the effects of kombucha extract cream on epidermal growth factor (EGF) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) represent epidermal generation and inflammation resolution in xerosis-like rat model.Materials and methods: Experimental study employed 30 male Wistar rats divided into five groups, consisting of healthy control (G1), negative control (cream base) (G2), positive control (5% urea cream) (G3), treatment groups receiving 10% (G4) and 20% (G5) kombucha extract cream. Xerosis induction by applying 5% SLS for nine days, topical treatments were applied for seven days. EGF and IL-10 levels were measured from skin tissue using ELISA. EGF data analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and post hoc Tamhane. IL-10 data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney (p<0.05).Results: The highest mean EGF levels were observed in G4 (665.96±17.74 ng/L) and the lowest in G3 (573.88±25.09 ng/L). One-Way ANOVA revealed a significant difference in EGF levels across groups (p=0.006). Regarding IL-10 levels, the highest mean was found in G1 (201.41±20.41 pg/mL) and the lowest in G4 (181.60±3.42 pg/mL). The Kruskal-Wallis showed a significant difference in IL-10 levels across treatment groups (p=0.013).Conclusion: Topical 10% kombucha extract cream increased EGF levels and modulated IL-10 in a xerosis-like rat model, highlighting its potential as a topical agent to enhance the skin repair process in xerotic conditions. Keywords: skin barrier repair, EGF, IL-10, topical antioxidant, Wistar rats, sodium lauryl sulfate

Abstract

Artemisia princeps is widely used in traditional Asian medicine and is well known for its diverse pharmacological properties. Scientific evidence supporting its role as a natural source of iron remains limited. Several medicinal plants have been reported to contain measurable iron and to improve iron status. This systematic review aimed to examine the pharmacological activities of A. princeps critically and to contextualize the limited iron-related evidence for this plant, compared with other medicinal plants with established iron content or bioavailability. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and ScienceDirect up to April 2025, following PRISMA guidelines and the PICOC framework. The extracted data were organized into two categories: (1) pharmacological activities of A. princeps, and (2) iron content and bioavailability-related outcomes of other medicinal plants. Eight studies investigating A. princeps were identified, predominantly reporting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and metabolic effects. Only one study reported the iron content of A. princeps, without evaluating iron bioavailability or haematological outcomes. In contrast, nine studies on plants such as Astragalus membranaceus, Beta vulgaris, and Moringa oleifera demonstrated improvements in haemoglobin levels and other iron-related parameters in animal models and, in some cases, human studies. Current evidence indicates that while A. Princeps possesses broad pharmacological activity; its potential as a source of bioavailable iron has not been adequately investigated. This review highlights substantial evidence gaps and underscores the need for targeted studies assessing the iron content, bioavailability, and haematological effects of A. princeps, rather than overstating its current role in iron-deficiency management. Keywords: A. princeps, iron deficiency anemia, biological products, plants, natural products

Abstract

Background: Dengue infection is a major global health concern in tropical and subtropical regions, especially among children, ranging from mild to severe disease with high morbidity and mortality. Although ferritin and hematocrit have prognostic value individually, their correlation in pediatric dengue remains underexplored. This study was conducted to determine the correlation between serum ferritin and hematocrit levels in children with dengue infection.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 69 children with dengue infection. Data collected included age, sex, nutritional status, disease severity, and hematologic parameters. Blood samples were obtained from all participants, serum ferritin levels were measured using Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immunoassay (CMIA), while hematocrit was measured from whole blood using an automated hematology analyzer. Correlation was assessed using Pearson’s or Spearman’s rho test, followed by multiple linear regression analysis.Results: The mean age was 10.09±4.23 years old, with 52.2% male and 47.8% female participants. Nutritional status was 29% undernourished, 58% normal, and 13% overnourished. Mild dengue was observed (65.2%), while 34.8% had severe disease. The mean serum ferritin level was 4820.97±6327.75 ng/mL, and the mean hematocrit was 42.10±6.21%. Spearman’s Rho test showed significant moderate positive correlation between serum ferritin and hematocrit. Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that increased serum ferritin levels were significantly correlated with an increased hematocrit levels, whereas age, gender, nutritional status, and disease severity were not significantly associated.Conclusion: Serum ferritin levels were positively correlated with serum hematocrit levels in children infected with dengue, suggesting a potential role for ferritin as both an inflammatory marker and an indicator of hemoconcentration for early risk stratification. Keywords: dengue, ferritin, hematocrit, children

Abstract

Background: Maternal obesity causes chronic low-grade inflammation with elevated TNF-α, potentially disrupting the intrauterine environment and fetal development. Previous studies have primarily focused on preterm inflammation or cytokine levels earlier in pregnancy. However, data on the relationship between maternal TNF-α levels at term pregnancy and immediate neonatal outcomes in obese women remains limited, especially in the Indonesian population. This study evaluates their correlation in term obese pregnancies.Materials and methods: Maternal serum TNF-α levels were assessed in obese pregnant women with gestational age ≥37 weeks. Blood samples were collected during the third trimester of pregnancy and analyzed using ELISA. Neonatal outcome data were extracted from medical records and evaluated within the first 24 hours of life. Pearson correlation was applied to parametric variables, including maternal TNF-α levels and birth length, while Spearman correlation was used for non-parametric neonatal outcome variables. This cross-sectional study analyzed secondary data from a parent cohort.Results: Maternal TNF-α levels were not significantly associated with neonatal outcomes (all p>0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed a weak association with birth length (r = 0.214). In contrast, Spearman correlation analyses demonstrated weak or negligible associations with birth weight (ρ = 0.227), head circumference (ρ = 0.043), APGAR score at 1 minute (ρ = −0.100), and at 5 minutes (ρ = −0.014).Conclusion: Maternal TNF-α levels were not significantly associated with neonatal outcomes among obese women with term pregnancies. Assessment of inflammatory status limited to the late third trimester may be inadequate to fully evaluate this relationship, indicating the need for future studies with inflammatory measurements initiated earlier in pregnancy. Keywords: TNF-α, maternal obesity, neonatal outcomes, APGAR score, term pregnancy
