Abstract

This research’s objective is to find the comparison of two television series, Wednesday (2022) and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018) of their setting in Gothic element using the theory of Fred Botting. Based on Botting’s theory, the setting in Gothic fiction was divided into two types, natural sublime and synthetic sublime. This research answered the question of what Gothic’s setting in the television series Wednesday (2022) and The Chilling Adventure of Sabrina (2018) and the comparison between the two television series regarding the Gothic’s setting. This research’s objective requires a deep understanding of the topic, so the qualitative descriptive method is applied in this research. Based on this reseach, it was found that there are nine Gothic setting in Wednesday (2022) and six in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018).  On that note, four similarities and seven differences was also found regarding the Gothic setting between the two television series. Based on the analysis, Wednesday (2022) has more Gothic setting compared to The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018) both in natural and synthetic sublime, with with one more data on natural sublime and four more data on synthetic sublime.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to peer out the results of the final perspective of Hidayatul Athfal junior high schools’ students in implementing digital English learning which refers to Merdeka curriculum. Beforehand, the Ministry of Education issued one of the latest efforts to change the education system, which is popularly known as the Merdeka curriculum. Based on the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System, curriculum is a set of plans and arrangements regarding objectives, content, and teaching materials, as well as methods used as guidelines for implementing up-to-date learning to achieve effective and optimal learning objectives. Apart from that, junior high school students in this research used learning media, it is barcode scanners as one of the learning media to make the digital system of the learning process at their meetings. The author uses a qualitative descriptive research method, which is conducted by direct observation and in-depth interviews with the parties involved, and the data collected is then analyzed descriptively by presenting the results of the research in the form of a research report. The conclusion of the research that the author draws that, it shows the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum is very helpful in assisting the junior high school students by adapting digital English learning process. It is proved that, 66.7% of students agreed with the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Hikayat Abu Samah merupakan salah satu hikayat yang berisi cerita keagamaan. Karya sastra melayu klasik memiliki banyak unsur kebahasaan khususnya unsur kebahasaan bahasa Melayu cikal bakal bahasa Indonesia, salah satu contohnya adalah Hikayat Abu Samah penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk membahas konjungsi ekstratekstual yang ada dalam Hikayat Abu Samah. Penelitian ini akan mengkaji jenis, posisi, beserta fungsi konjungsi ekstratekstual yang terdapat dalam Hikayat Abu Samah. Metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif adalah metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan sumber data berupa teks Hikayat Abu Samah yang telah ditransliterasikan. Sementra itu, data dalam penelitian ini adalah konjungsi ekstratekstual yang ada pada Hikayat Abu Samah. Teknik pengumpulan yang dipakai, yaitu teknik pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukan lima jenis konjungsi ekstratekstual yaitu maka, adapun, hatta, syahdan, dan sebermula. Konjungsi ekstratekstual yang ditemukan di awal dan tengah kalimat adalah maka dan adapun. Sementara itu, konjungsi ekstratekstual hatta, syahdan, dan sebermula hanya ditemukan di awal kalimat. Fungsi konjungsi ekstratekstual  maka dan adapun adalah  pembuka kalimat untuk menekankan pokok pembicaraan dan sebagai pembatas kalimat satu dengan kalimat lain. Fungsi konjungsi ekstratekstual hatta dan sebermula adalah pembuka alinea baru, dan sebagai padanan arti kata yang lain. Sementara itu, konjungsi ekstratekstual syahdan berfungsi untuk pembuka alinea baru.

Abstract

The object of this study is The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time (2003), a novel that presents a story about a dog murder case that happened on the Mrs. Shears’s house lawn and Christopher, an Asperger Syndrome kid, tries to solve the case and disclose the murderer. The engaging topic which became the main discussion in this study is why Christopher with Asperger Syndrome can solve the dog murder incident in this novel. To analyze this topic, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative method. This study found that in favor of Christopher’s reasons to solve the dog murder case, Christopher has three reasons namely Christopher’s likes animals, especially dogs, Christopher’s desire to be a detective like Sherlock Holmes, and Christopher’s responsibility to find the murder since the dog belongs to his neighbor.

Abstract

Pragmatism is an important factor to take into consideration when developing political speech because the main goal of political speech is to communicate with the public and foster trust. 1) Identify the constructive and destructive forms of politeness employed in President Jokowi's statements. 2) To determine how frequently President Jokowi used positive and negative strategies in his speech. In this study, a qualitative research design was used. Using document analysis, it is possible to pinpoint the diplomatic techniques Jokowi employed during his speeches. According to the analysis, more positive politeness strategies (96,9%) than negative politeness strategies (3,1%) are used. The analysis showed that the most popular positive politeness tactics were to show greater interest in the recipient and to use in-group identity markers. The speaker only employed one impolite tactic, which was to show deference. To gain the trust of Indonesians, Jokowi primarily employs positive politeness techniques.

Abstract

ABSTRAK This study aims to identify how patriarchal culture influences to the emergence of gender discrimination behavior and to find out the forms of implementation of female characters in their efforts to resist gender discrimination to achieve equality between men and women in the movie series Anne with an E. Two types of data were used in this research, primary and secondary data. The primary data source is a serial movie entitled Anne with an E. While secondary data sources are supporting references taken from books, journals, and the internet related to the research. The author used a qualitative analysis method and applied Naomi Wolf's theory of liberal feminism to analyze the data. The results of the study concluded that the involvement of patriarchal culture applied in Avonlea society influences the emergence of discriminatory behavior toward female characters in various aspects such as education, employment, marriage and individual autonomy. Moreover, the female characters implemented the feminist movement as a further response to the gender discrimination they experienced by raising awareness through ideology, forming women's empowerment communities, campaigning for freedom of speech and improvisation, evaluating and innovating education, and empowering women to participate in politics. Keywords: Anne with an E, Liberal Feminism, Gender Discrimination, Patriarchy.

Abstract

This research discusses the use of metaphor features in the Podcast Najwa Shihab Episode “Eklusif: Ganjar Pranowo dan Piala Dunia” | Mata Najwa. This podcast is one of the contents of Najwa Sihab's Youtube channel which is the source of data in this study. The purpose of the research is to analyze the characteristics of metaphors used and their relationship with power. This research was conducted using Fairclough's (1992) critical discourse research approach, which views language as a means of power. The research method used was descriptive qualitative. Through this research, the author found six metaphorical expressions from the podcast episode " Eklusif: Ganjar Pranowo dan Piala Dunia” | Mata Najwa. The results of this study show that language not only plays a central role in human life, but language is also created as a tool to control something, change something or make something happen. Other results show that the discourse and communication patterns between Najwa Shihab and Ganjar Pranowo in the podcast exemplify the exercise of power that directly influences people's opinions and behavior in responding to the government's stance of canceling the 2023 World Cup in Indonesia.

Abstract

In the sociology of literature, social action is interpreted as a form of individual behavior to achieve a goal, without social action, social relations will be passive. This study aims to identify and describe the forms of social action in the characters in the novel We Go Today by Ziggy Zezsyazeoviennazabrizkie. This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, the primary data sources are dialogues and author's narration in the novel We Go Today. Collecting data using the read and sign method, then data analysis through the transcription stage and then data reduction to produce some data that is relevant to Max Weber's theory. The results of this study found 12 forms of social action. 3 in the form of instrumental rational actions, 5 traditional non-rational actions, and 4 affective rational actions.

Abstract

Suatu kebudayaan lahir karena adanya dorongan dari pikiran manusia untuk menciptakan sesuatu hal yang kemudian melahirkan kebudayaan itu di suatu daerah yang mereka tinggali. Kebudayaan dan manusia adalah dua hal yang tidak dapat dipisahkan. Manusia yang menyelaraskan dirinya dengan sosial dan budaya menjadi sebuah masyarakat. Kebudayaan tidak mungkin ada jika tidak ada masyarakat dan masyarakat tidak mungkin tidak menghasilkan suatu kebudayaan. Penetapan Desa Kandri sebagai Desa Wisata mengharuskan masyarakat untuk terus bergerak dan berproses dalam menyikapi perubahan karena tidak mungkin hanya bergantung pada pemerintah saja. Salah satu upacara ritual untuk konsumsi wisata yang ada di desa Kandri adalah Sesaji Rewanda yang telah dilestarikan secara turun temurun dan masih ada hingga sekarang. Sesaji Rewanda sendiri dilaksanakan setiap tahun pada tujuh hari setelah lebaran, sebelumya tradisi ini dilaksanakan pada 1 Syawal atau pada hari ketiga Hari Raya Idul Fitri. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif. Menggambarkan secara sistematis, factual, dan akurat tentang bagaimana latar belakang sesaji rewanda, peoses pelaksanaan, manfaat dan fungsi yang diperoleh, serta bagaimana cara melestarikan agar tradisi itu tetap terjaga.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the actions of the characters in the novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux and their involvement in the story using aspects of narrative structure contained in Vladimir Propp's narrative structure study. This research uses qualitative approach and narrative approach. The material object of this research is Gaston Leroux’s Le Fantôme de l'Opéra which is studied using the concept of narrative structure proposed by Vladimir Propp. The data collection techniques used are reading and note-taking techniques. The data are grouped in a data tabulation table and then analyzed using structural analysis techniques. The results of this study show that this novel consists of 25 functions namely trickery, villainy, mediation, interdiction, beginning counteraction, unrecognized, reconnaissance, difficult task, delivery, the donor, complicity, transfiguration, struggle, absentation, hero’s reaction, departure, pursuit, provision, spatial translocation, the initial misfortune, violation, rescue, solution, return, exposure. The five spheres are villain, donor, helper, dispatcher, hero. The scheme in this novel is divided into three parts, namely the beginning, middle and end. These three schemes form a plot, namely a mixed plot, because the events that occur in this story begin in the middle. While the story progresses forward and several times displays pieces of flashback sections that explain the background of the story. Therefore, it can be concluded that the aspects of narrative structure found in this novel are aspects of actor's function, spheres of action and schemes, then the relationship between aspects is found in the aspect of the schemes.
