Abstract

Abstract- Kalimantan (Borneo) is famous as the island of a Pulau Seribu due to the large number of rivers that run across its cities. One of the longest is the Kahayan river that flows through the city of Palangka Raya. The river as an important aspect in Kalimantan people’s life has made it the starting point for the embryo of a city in the form of river side dwellings that keeps on developing amidst the dynamics of the Kahayan river that undergoes a high degree of change in terms of water level during the dry and rainy seasons. The issue that arises is the addition and loss of space due to the changes of the river water level. The purpose of this research is to describe the adaptation strategies used by the writer in Kampung Pahandut that is unique when compared other kampongs (villages) due to its condition of having dry and flooded streets in the dwelling area. This research is qualitative in nature, employing the narrative descriptive method. The data collection technique uses purposive sampling to collect the physical and activity data. The physical and activity data were gained through a survey of the research object as well as picture taking, field observation, as well as the medium ofinterviews conducted with the Kampung Pahandut villagers. The data was then processed by classifying the numerous changes that had happened in both physical and activity-related terms as well as analyzing and concluding the adaptation strategies. It was found that in Kampung Pahandut there were both physical and activity-related changes as efforts to accommodate its people to enable them to survive the dry and flooding condition due to the changes of the river water level. Within these efforts there was also architectural adaptation based on the study consisting of three adaptation strategies, namely: being adjustable, refittable, and movable. Abstract

Abstract - Apart from paying close attention to architecture as a constructional skill connected with material structure and construction, tectonics also covers its expression. One of the architects closely associated with tectonics is Y.B. Mangunwijaya, and in each of his works of architecture the tectonic content is put to the front or highlighted. Referring to Kenneth Frampton’s definition of tectonics as the Art of Joinings, it may be quite interesting to focus on the relationship between the three purposes to be found in a work of architecture, namely spatial distribution, construction, and ornamention.. One of the architectural works designed by Y.B. Mangunwijaya that has given shape to these three objectives is the Gua Maria Complex devoted to Mother Mary in Sendangsono. In Sendangsono there is a main route for pilgrims that is most commonly visited and passed by visitors to this sacred place. The analysis of architectural tectonics in this research study has been limited based on the ordering of the space passed via the main pilgrim route in Sendangsono. The spatial sequence consists of an entry, the Way of the Cross (Via Crucis), a basin for holy water, a yard featuring the Cave of Mother Mary (Gua Maria), and finally the yard across the river. Its scope includes the tectonics of space, structure, and ornamentation. The analysis indicates that the architectural tectonics in this complex has been designed with the concept of oneness and respect for nature in mind, so hat it has become one with the surrounding natural elements. The local materials used are environment-friendly. The next step is to further refine the elements used for this spatial and structural lay-out by way of ornamentation in order to enrich the Christian significance of it all. Keywords: architecture, tectonics, Y.B. Abstract

Abstract- The expansion of the western part of Bandung was preceded by one of the main roads named Groote Postweg (Jalan Jendral Sudirman). Apart from this road, the area was developed further with the expansion of buildings on Jalan Layang Cimindi in an effort to curb traffic congestion, along with a railway route and vertical buildings that left their mark on the architecture of Bandung. The development of the area emerged through the presence of a variety of functions that affected the types and variants of land parcels (kaveling) and buildings in this part of town. The relevant data were obtained by reduplicating maps of the area dating back to 996, 2003, 2007, 2010, and 2015. The area’s expansion is discussed in synchronic and diachronic ways showing the local sitauation from 1996 to 2015. This part of West Bandung starts from Jalan Jendral Sudirman (at the Jalan Jamika three-way intersection) reaching Jalan Raya Cibeureum (until the Pasteur Tollroad). This expansion has been based on the variety of land parcels and the range of building types that have emerged over the years, resulting in the tendency toward a range of functions, types of land parcels and diversity of buildings. This trend is based on the outcome of a field survey, and the data have been obtained by way of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The buildings show a tendency toward certain dominant functions, that is to say being mainly commercial in nature, two-storied in addition to single buildings and small types of land parcels. Less dominant functions have also affected the skyline and urban lay-out or planning, in the shape of the Sudirman Suite Apartments whose height amounts to no fewer than 20 stories. Keywords: urban architecture development, range of functions, range of land parcels, variety of building types, tendency

Abstract

Abstract- The Salman Mosque was constructed in the era of modern architecture guided by geometric elements. Geometric elements enable architects to easily design with accurate measurement. These geometric elements were applied to the Salman Mosque by Achmad Noe’man. The applications of these geometric elements were made to the roof, walls and floor of the Salman Mosque building. The purpose of this paper is study the aspects of geometric elements within this research. The other purpose is to study the application of geometric elements to the Salman Mosque in Bandung. The theories behind this research are the ones concerning geometric elements, modern types of architecture, Mosque architecture, structuring principles, and archetypes. The method used to conduct the research is the research object analysis, in this case of theSalman Mosque. This paper discusses the background, formulation of the problem, purpose, utility, method, theoretical study, object data and research object analysis, as well as the ultimate research conclusion and suggestion. The benefits of the research outcome that can be derived from this research study are yielding knowledge concerning the application of geometric elements to a Mosque building in Indonesia as well as producing recommendations for the design of geometric elements in Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract - The city district known as Senen forms one of the historical parts of Jakarta where there are many buildings to be found in the Dutch East Indies Empire style as architectural relics of the Dutch Colonial Era, and the majority of these buildings are still there, up to the present. Many of these relics of the past have not been properly maintained and have suffered damage. One of these happens to be the Heritage Bank Indonesia building situated at Jalan Prapatan No.42 in Jakarta. After its conservation and re-use, a functional change has taken place that is quite drastic when considered from its establishment until the present. This research study can be categorized as qualitative. The research method consists of the descriptive method along with the analytical and interpretative methods. The data have been analyzed by drawing a comparison between the building in its initial state and its current condition, which was subsequently processed based on the conservation principles issued by the regional authorities called Perda. The data collection technique was employed with the observational method, interviews, taking measurements, and by way of studying the relevant background literature. The conclusion of this research study is that the building of the Heritage Bank Indonesia is nothing but a piece of sculpture after its conservation because it has become isolated or alienated from its surroundings, and as such it is no longer in keeping with its environmental context, which is situated in the Learning center complex of Bank Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract- Having been an autonomous region since 1906, Bandung has experienced continuous expansion. One factor pushing this development was the construction of a road network connecting Bandung with its surrounding towns, yielding a variety of spatial and functional physical elements in urban space. This research study examines the architectural development of the southern part of Bandung, located on Jalan Raya Kopo and Jalan Terusan Buah Batu from 1996 until 2015 by analyzing the transformation that occurred, using the typo-morphological method, and by determining the correlation between the functional elements (land use or exploitation and the spatial-physical component of buildings and land parcels known as kaveling of their scope (height, mass lay-out, area width and type of lot). The tendency of the the area’s expansion in each of the street corridors can be analyzed through determining the correlation between these components covering the variety and dominant character or features observed. Jalan Raya Kopo shows a tendency toward a commercial trade-bound function whose mass type consists of one storey situated on the land parcel on the roadside in the middle of small lots. On the other hand, the extension of Jalan Terusan Buah Batu shows a functional tendency toward mixed use featuring a two-storied building mass on a land parcel on the roadside positioned in the middle of small lots. A change has been discernible in the actual planning of the spatial pattern from a purely residential area into a merger between commercial or industrial occupancy, in addition to the increasing density of the area and its soaring skyline. Keywords: Urban architecture, physical, spatial, street corridor

Abstract

Abstract- A political regime generally possesses an identity and has insight into nationally idealistic cultural values. Its expression can be observed in the art and physical architecture that blossoms in its era. This insight gives birth to national identity. The formation of national identity itself originated from several dimensions, namely the sub-national dimension, the personal dimension, and the supra-national dimension. In the transition between the Netherland-East Indies and the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesia as a new country possessed ideals in the formation of physical architectures that can represent its national identity. This insight is realized in detail within nation-building and character-building ideas within several mega-projects pioneered by the Old-Order government. One of them was the Istiqlal Mosque as a national house of worship. The expression of Istiqlal Mosque architecture cannot be separated from the dimensions of national identity formation in architecture. The focus of this research is on the observation of Istiqlal Mosque architecture. Indicators of the national identity’s expression in Istiqlal Mosque architecture are: the discussion of national-identity dimensions in architecture (national-identity dimension – sub-national dimension, national-identity dimension – personal identity and national-identity dimension- supra-national identity). The discussions of expression in architecture that can be achieved through visual composition formation are (a) domination, (b) repetition, and (C) continuity in composition of one architectural object. The object of architecture was further examined, arranged by form and material, general design principles, contextual relations, and physical, semantic and spatial organization of an architectural object. The Istiqlal Mosque is one example of an architectural product from the previous political regime that can profoundly and critically sharpen our thoughts concerning the Indonesian nation’s identity on the national and state level. Abstract

Abstract - The Cirebon region was once one of the centers for sugar plantations on Java. In the middle of the 19th century the town of Cirebon developed an urban area revolving around the food industry whose main products were sugar and ice. To facilitate the distribution of sugar in large quantities, the State Railway Service built the Cirebon Railway Station in the Kejaksan town district. This was designed and built by a Dutch architect named P.A.J. Mooijen in 1911, in the typical “Indies” style that was in the middle phase of its development. This research study aims to explore the influence of function and hierarchy on its architectural form, namely the main station building on Jalan Siliwangi in the Kejaksan district. The research steps consist of deconstructing and classifying the building, employing Thijs Eversen’s theory concerning Archetypes in Architecture, and an examination of function, form, space and ordering principles as described by Francis D.K. Ching. The result of this interpretation is subsequently linked to various indicators that point toward the Indies style of architecture, as proposed by Hardinoto. The final step consists of showing the connection between spatial function and hierarchy found in the building form. The conclusion indicates that spatial function and hierarchy have indeed had a direct impact on the architectural form examined. This is discernible in the building mass that shows a formal hierarchy in the middle, which is in keeping with the hierarchy of building space. The typical Dutch East Indies building concept featuring the use of symmetrical space, a monumental shape due to the hierarchy in the middle section, and the use of supporting walls can all be found in the main building of this railway station. Keywords: Function, Form, Space, Spatial Hierarchy, Dutch East Indies Style of Architecture

Abstract

Abstract- At present, the Fine Arts Museum at the Keraton of Yogyakarta is still intact, though it has seen slight change and is less than comfortably equipped for certain activities. This research study aims to reveal the cultural significance of the objects and the architectural elements that have shaped them, followed by a description of preservation measures. The research method is qualitative-interpretative, along with the Architectural Approach (function-form-meaning), Architectural Typology, and the Conservational Approach. The cultural significance of the formal aspects falls under architectural values and skills, whereas the functional aspect takes on the form of purpose-based values and history-related values. The building with its massive shape has been adapted to its environment or immediate surroundings, in addition to having been ornamented. The spatial arrangement shows a symmetrical pattern. The thick walls protect it against the local tropical climate. The function of the building has changed drastically, namely from being a school to a residence for the Crown Prince, to its final transformation into a museum. The ornaments on the ceiling, railings, walls, gable and columns reveal a decidedly mixed style consisting of Art Nouveau, the typical Indies style, and local Javanese architecture. The skill-related values reveal the technology behind the shaping elements of the structural and architectural construction. The current purpose-based values refer to its present use as a Fine Arts Museum. The period spanning 1921-1934 forms the reference point for conservation. The condition of the building is still intact and solid, but there is some ambiguity in terms of temporal context (era) discernible, and there is minor damage, as well as less than satisfactory suitability for its current purpose. Conservation measures include adaptation of the building in accordance with its current function and preservation in the shape of routine maintenance. Keywords: Fine Arts Museum, cultural meaning, adaptation, conservation

Abstract

Abstract- In addition to Hinduism, Balinese people are familiar with Buddhism that entered the region at almost the same time as Hinduism during Dharmaudayana’s reign. Unfortunately, due to the large number of sects and religions developed at that time, there was religious simplification by Mpu Kuturan. Syncretism occurred between Shivaism, Buddhism (Mahayana), as well as original Balinese local religion merging into Shiva-Buddhism that developed into Balinese Hinduism that has been prominent until the present. After independence, the school of Buddhism that had not been influenced by the conditions and local denominations was resurrected and had Vihara temples built. Hence, the existence of Buddhist buildings of worship on the island of Bali from the IX-XI century called Candi (Vihara). Based on this phenomenon, the need arose for identifying similarities (in terms of continuity) and differences (discontinuity) of spatial and formal patterns in the Buddhist buildings of worship in Bali within the typo-morphological context, namely Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), Candi Pegulingan (Pegulingan Temple), Candi Kalibukbuk (Kalibukbuk Temple), Brahma Vihara Arama (Brahma Arama Temple), and Vihara Buddha Sakyamuni(Buddha Sakyamuni Temple). The descriptive qualitative method was used through field observation of individual research objects which was subsequently identified and analyzed to discover the similarities and differences as well as mutual relations in accordance with variables determined by theoretical analysis concerning typo-morphology and Buddhist buildings of worship. There are similarities and differences in each research object. The similarities and differences exist due to the strong beliefs and closely guarded simbols of Buddhism although there is also the influence of local and traditional elements on the Balinese order of life. These, in turn caused the existence of numerous patterns of each object. The new patterns are the reflection of the various forms of assimilation that occur on Bali. Keywords: Buildings of Worship, Candi, Vihara, Bali, Typo-morphology
