Abstract

Hospitality is a theoretical concept that underlies intersubjectivity, that is, my acceptance of the coming of strangers. Derrida and Caputo propose the concept of anarchy hospitality as the most radical form of hospitality, where hospitality occurs without a source/principle because the I fully welcomes the other. However, Kearney criticizes this thought because it actually creates a space for violence. The problem of an-archic radical hospitality lies in the asymmetrical relation between the I and the Other. Kearney's critique leads to the question of what the source/principle (arche) of radical hospitality is. In this paper, I argue that Kearney's concept of hospitality can produce radical hospitality through two arches: the necessary existence of the I and the other. Radical hospitality is hospitality in a symmetrical relational structure. As a competing concept of anarchy hospitality from Derrida and Caputo, I will call this hospitality model as di-archic hospitality. To prove my point, this study employs a qualitative methodology that integrates meta-analysis with conceptual analysis. First step, I will explain Kearney's thoughts on otherness. Secondly, I will explain Kearney's thoughts on arche. Finally, I will draw conclusions from the study that has been conducted.

Abstract

Should we always follow our conscience? Through a close reading of the works of Aquinas and Arendt, this paper argues that conscience alone is insufficient for determining right actions. After witnessing Eichmann’s trial, Arendt questioned the reliability of conscience as traditionally understood. Traditionally, conscience is considered the voice of God and an infallible moral compass. Aquinas, a traditional thinker, developed a systematic theory of conscience. However, Aquinas does not view conscience as the voice of God or an infallible moral guide. Rather, conscience is an act of reason applying moral knowledge to particular actions. Consequently, conscience is fallible and must be supplemented by moral virtues and prudence (prudentia). Prudence is the practical wisdom that guides the will and helps one discern the best course of action in specific circumstances. For Arendt, conscience is a byproduct of thinking that evaluates one’s actions. Since thinking is an inner dialogue, conscience is subjective and requires judgment—namely, the capacity to evaluate actions from others’ viewpoints through mutual debate and enlightenment. In conclusion, prima facie, we must always listen to the voice of our conscience, but not without critical reflection and prudence.
The Configurative Role of Emptiness in Hylectic Consciousness: A Phenomenological Investigation Amar Yanuar Pamungkas

Abstract

Husserl’s Ideas I distinguishes a noetic approach from a hyletic (material) one, yet his emphasis on the former leaves the latter conceptually underdeveloped. This underdevelopment fuels familiar objections: the enigmatic status of non-intentional “data,” worries about immanentism and idealist drift, and suspicions that correlationism licenses a tacit humanism. I offer a critical reconstruction of the hyletic dimension that preserves Husserl’s texts while clarifying its role in phenomenological analysis. Methodologically, I conjoin a conceptual analysis of hyletic and noetic moments with a phenomenological account of their correlation in givenness (Gegebenheit). The claim is that hyletic content, through distinctive modes of “emptiness,” functions configuratively, structuring intentional experience rather than simply stocking it with data. On this view, the hyletic is not brute sensory matter but a condition for what I call epistemic reversibility within consciousness: the capacity of experience to reconfigure its own evidential bearings by way of hyletic modulation. This reinterpretation addresses the standard critiques and repositions hyletics as an internally normative moment of Husserlian phenomenology.
