Abstract

Dengue Fever (DF) is an infectious disease caused by the dengue virus, primarily transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. The incidence and mortality rates, especially among children, have remained alarmingly high. This is largely attributed to the ambiguous clinical manifestations of the disease and the challenges in predicting its severity. Factors such as nutritional status and immunization play a pivotal role in influencing the severity of DF. In a study conducted at dr. Doris Sylvianus General Regional Hospital, we analyzed the impact of these factors on pediatric patients diagnosed with DF. Our observational analytical study followed a cross-sectional approach involving 51 patients aged 0 to 17, admitted between January 2022 and December 2023. Data were sourced from patient medical records and evaluated using the chi-square test. The findings revealed no significant correlation between nutritional status or immunization and the severity of DF symptoms. This implies that maintaining good nutritional health and having a complete vaccination history do not guarantee milder symptoms in DF patients. Ultimately, while nutritional monitoring, vaccination, and early detection of warning signs are vital in managing DF, they do not directly correlate with the severity of the disease. Further research is warranted to explore other influential factors.

Abstract

This study analyzes the distribution of characteristics and factors associated with hypertension among menopausal women in the Teluk Tiram Health Center area. Hypertension is a significant health issue affecting postmenopausal women, yet local evidence from community-based health care in Indonesia is limited. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 105 menopausal women. Data collection included structured surveys assessing age at menopause, Body Mass Index (BMI), physical activity, stress levels, sleep quality, and history of hormonal contraceptive use. Bivariate analysis, utilizing chi-square tests, along with multivariate analysis through logistic regression, was conducted to identify associated factors. The findings indicated that early menopause, high BMI, low physical activity, elevated stress levels, poor sleep quality, and a history of combined hormonal contraceptive use were significantly related to hypertension. Multivariate analysis further identified BMI as the most influential factor, succeeded by low physical activity and high stress levels. These results underscore the importance of weight management, promotion of physical activity, and stress reduction strategies to lower the risk of hypertension in menopausal women. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the multifactorial nature of hypertension during menopause and calls for comprehensive prevention strategies in primary care settings.

Abstract

Work fatigue is a problem that is often found in every job, one of which is in a workshop. Kisaran Fantasi Workshop is one of the car repair shops whose work involves muscle and energy. Workers are required to complete repairs according to the queue that exists per day. The queue makes workers have to work late into the night and even rest periods are often used to work when the repair queue does not stop. With poor physical activity and work duration occurring continuously, workers often experience dizziness, frequent yawning, excessive thirst, and a weakening of activity that makes workers often feel like lying down and unable to concentrate. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between work duration and physical workload with the level of fatigue in workers at the Kisaran Fantasy Car Workshop. This research is descriptive quantitative research with a Cross Sectional approach. The sampling technique used total sampling with a research sample of 55 respondents. Data collection instruments used questionnaires, observations and interviews. Data were analyzed with Univariate and Bivariate analysis. Statistical test using Chi-Square test with significance α = <0.05. The results showed that there was a relationship between work duration (P value = 0.000) and physical workload (P value = 0.000) with the level of job fatigue in workers at the Kisaran Fan Car Workshop.

Abstract

Palangka Raya, as the capital city of Central Kalimantan, has unique environmental characteristics because it often experiences forest and land fires (karhutla) which result in an increase in air pollutants. This study aims to analyze the association between exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) pollutants and the incidence of Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) in toddlers in Palangka Raya in 2024. This retrospective study was conducted in Palangka Raya City, with data on the incidence of ARI in toddlers obtained from the Palangka Raya City Health Office. Determination of NO2 and CO levels using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform that analyzes TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite data from the Sentinel-5 precursor. Geographic Information System (GIS) software was used to process spatial data and map layout. The relationship between CO and NO2 levels and ARI incidence was analyzed using linear regression tests, followed by multiple linear regression tests if there was a significant correlation. All statistical tests were conducted using a web-based platform. The conclusion of this study was that the linear regression test showed that NO2 levels only contributed 2.07% (p=0.6555) and CO contributed weakly (p=0.4981) to the incidence of ARI. This indicates that other factors are more dominant in causing ARI in Palangka Raya

Abstract

Banjarmasin, a city in South Kalimantan, faced significant challenges in 2024 due to the dual impacts of El Niño and traditional land-clearing activities, leading to widespread forest and land fires. These fires emit harmful air pollutants, notably carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), thereby increasing the risk of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) among the population. This study was conducted to analyze the correlation between the concentration of these air pollutants and the incidence of ARI in Banjarmasin throughout 2024. Employing a retrospective research method, data on ARI cases were sourced from the Banjarmasin City Health Office. CO and NO2 concentrations were analyzed using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) with Sentinel-5P satellite imagery and subsequently visualized using ArcGIS. The linear regression test revealed that CO levels showed no significant association with ARI incidence (p = 0.552), accounting for only 22.69% of the variance. Similarly, NO2 levels were not significantly linked to ARI rates (p = 0.1163), accounting for only 3.65%. The findings suggest that, despite the presence of air pollutants from land fires, CO and NO2 have only a weak influence on the incidence of ARI in Banjarmasin.

Abstract

Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) remains a health problem found in tropical countries, especially Indonesia, where humidity supports the development of worm parasites. This study aimed to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and worm infections among students of SD Negeri Inpres 1 Apo, Jayapura City. This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design with a population of 167 and a sample of 97 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Inclusion criteria were fifth and sixth grade students willing to participate and submit faecal samples; absent or sick students were excluded. Data were collected using questionnaires and faecal examinations through the direct method at the Jayapura Health Polytechnic Laboratory. Data were analysed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test (α < 0.05). Results showed that most respondents were 11 years old (45.4%), female (55.7%), class VI B students (24%), and 47.4% tested positive helminth infection. Bivariate analysis found no significant relationship between knowledge, handwashing, footwear use, nail hygiene, snack hygiene, or defecation habits and helminth infection (p > 0.05). Although no significant association was found, good personal hygiene remains essential to prevent STH. Education from schools and parents is crucial to improve children’s hygiene practices.

Abstract

Bango River is one of river in Malang city with its role as a primary source for irrigation and community sanitation. According to data from Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, it was found that the river suffered from heavy pollution for five consecutive years because of open defecation practices and high sediment loads. This condition creates a critical gap between existing water quality and the hygiene standards required for public health. This study aims to make a filtration for Bango water, so people can use it as their function. This filtration system improved the physical and chemical parameters of Bango River water so can suit with national water sanitation standards. This research used the method of pre and post-test experiments to treat Bango River water using simple filtration. The results were analyzed based on Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No 2 of 2023. The results showed a significant increase in the quality of physical and chemical parameters such as turbidity, TDS, and DO in Bango River water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the simple filtration device is effective in reducing three out of five water quality parameters that were tested

Abstract

Hypertension, a chronic disease, remains a leading cause of global illness and death. Medication adherence is critical for managing hypertension, yet poor adherence is common. This systematic review evaluated how community empowerment and self-management education influence medication adherence in adults with hypertension. Using PRISMA guidelines, the review identified studies published in English from 2015 to 2025 in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus, focusing on adult hypertensive populations and reporting adherence outcomes. Studies without educational or empowerment interventions were excluded. Two reviewers independently selected and assessed the quality of studies. Of 443 articles, six met the criteria. Results showed that structured self-management education, especially with personalized support and follow-up, significantly improved medication adherence. Community empowerment strategies, including family involvement, peer support, and engagement with local health workers, further enhanced motivation and long-term adherence. These findings highlight the importance of integrating self-management and community-based interventions into hypertension care. Such approaches may strengthen public health programs, promote sustained treatment adherence, and reduce hypertension-related complications. The review’s evidence supports prioritizing these strategies for better health outcomes. This review was not prospectively registered.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in many low- and middle-income countries, including Indonesia, and maternal nutrition during pregnancy plays a critical role in its prevention. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a nutrition literacy intervention on pregnant women's knowledge regarding stunting prevention in Tabunganen, Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan. A one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design was used. A total of 48 pregnant women were recruited using purposive sampling in May 2025. Nutrition knowledge was assessed using a structured questionnaire before and after a nutrition counseling intervention. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test with SPSS version 25 to compare pretest and posttest scores. The results showed that most respondents had sufficient knowledge at baseline (79.2%). After the intervention, the proportion of respondents with good knowledge increased from 20.8% to 58%. The paired t-test indicated a statistically significant increase in knowledge scores after the intervention (mean difference = 2.9; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that nutrition literacy counseling was associated with improved knowledge of stunting prevention among pregnant women. Integrating structured nutrition education into routine antenatal care may support efforts to strengthen maternal nutrition knowledge in communities at risk of stunting.

Abstract

This study explored the persistence of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in Indonesia, focusing on the role of health communication barriers and social copying in sustaining the practice. Despite being recognized globally as a violation of human rights, FGM/C remains prevalent as a culturally normative practice in West Java, where it is intertwined with notions of purity, religion, and social acceptance. Using a qualitative case study with an ethnographic communication approach in Purwakarta Regency, this research involved in-depth interviews with 10 participants, consisting of two traditional birth attendants (paraji), three healthcare workers (doctors and midwives), two adult women, and 2 adolescents to understand how cultural meanings and weak health communication perpetuate the practice. The findings revealed that FGM/C was endured not because of religious obligation but through intergenerational social imitation and the absence of culturally sensitive health education. Ambiguous regulations and passive attitudes among healthcare providers further reinforce public reliance on traditional actors. Consequently, formal health messages fail to challenge deeply rooted social norms. The study concludes that effective eradication of FGM/C requires culturally grounded and integrated health communication strategies.
