Acta Aquatica: Aquatic Sciences Journal is a scientific open access journal in the field of aquatic sciences, published periodically (April and October) by the Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) Universitas Malikussaleh (Malikussaleh University) in cooperation with Marine Center Universitas Malikussaleh, Department of Aquaculture Universitas Malikussaleh and Department of Marine Science Universitas Malikussaleh. Acta aquatica are publish original research, overviews and reviews relating to aquatic environments (wetlands, freshwater and marine waters) and the border limits of these environmental systems and the impacts of human activities on the environmental systems. Acta Aquatica has a related studies in aquatic bioecology, aquaculture, hydrology, biodiversity of aquatic biosphere, oceanology, exploitation and exploration technology of aquatic resources, fisheries product technology, aquatic microbiology, aquatic modeling, aquatic geographic information systems, and socio-economic of aquatic resources.

Abstract

The present study investigated the seasonal feeding habits of the pike (Esox lucius) inhabiting Salmanlı Dam Lake in the Adapazarı district of Sakarya province. Sampling was conducted on a regular basis over the course of three seasons (spring, summer and autumn) during the 2024–2025 period. The method employed was spin fishing from the shore. In accordance with the regulations prohibiting fishing in the lake during the winter months, specifically from December to March, no sampling could be conducted during this period. Consequently, no samples were obtained. A total of 267 pike individuals were captured during the study period, and their stomach contents were analysed. A thorough analysis of the stomach contents revealed that the diet of E. lucius consisted of various types of fish (Atherina boyeri, Alburnus escherichii, Cyprinus carpio, Scardinius erythrophthalmus), reptiles (Natrix natrix, Lacerta viridis), amphibians (Pelophlax sp.), rodents (Microtus sp.), and macroinvertebrates. Despite the preponderance of fish in the diet throughout the study period, the reptile species N. natrix was dominant, particularly in spring and autumn. This finding suggests that pike may modify their feeding habits in response to seasonal changes in prey availability. The results obtained demonstrate the feeding flexibility and adaptive behaviour of pike to environmental stressors, thus contributing to a more complete understanding of the dynamics of the local ecosystem. Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the protein content of feed for catfish (Clarias sp.) formulated from chicken waste and fish waste as an alternative high-protein feed. The method used is descriptive quantitative by comparing the results of protein content analysis of two treatments, namely fish waste-based feed (PRO24) and chicken waste (PRO25). The feed was formulated with the same composition of additional ingredients, while the difference lies in the main protein source. Protein content analysis was carried out through laboratory testing using the Kjeldahl method. The results showed that the fish waste-based feed had a protein content of 62%, higher than the chicken waste-based feed at 57%. The 5% difference indicates the effect of the type of raw material on the protein content of the feed. Both types of feed still meet the optimal protein requirement standard for catfish growth. These results indicate that fish waste has more potential as an alternative protein source in feed formulations, but chicken waste can still be utilized with formulation improvements. Utilizing organic waste as a feed ingredient contributes to reducing production costs, as well as supporting the principle of sustainability through more efficient waste management. Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem in the coastal area of Pasekan Subdistrict, Indramayu Regency, is experiencing environmental pressure due to coastal abrasion and land-use conversion, which affect vegetation density. This study aims to analyze changes in mangrove density during 2015–2025 using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method based on Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 imagery. The analysis included image preprocessing, NDVI calculation, density classification, and spatial change analysis. The results showed that mangrove density area decreased by 29.2293 ha (9.38%), from 311.7671 ha in 2015 to 282.5378 ha in 2025. The decline mainly occurred in the very high-density class due to coastal abrasion and land conversion into ponds and settlements. Meanwhile, the increase in low to medium-density classes indicates mangrove regeneration and rehabilitation in several locations. In addition, Sentinel-2 imagery provided better spatial detail than Landsat 8 for mangrove density identification. Keywords: Mangrove density; Landsat 8; NDVI; Sentinel

Abstract

Mahseer (Tor tambroides) is an endemic freshwater fish species with high ecological and economic value; however, its aquaculture development is constrained by slow growth performance. Dietary probiotic supplementation has been proposed as a nutritional strategy to improve growth and feed utilization. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus sp. probiotic supplementation in the diet on the growth performance and nutrient retention of mahseer juveniles. The experiment was conducted for 60 days using a completely randomized design with six dietary treatments consisting of different probiotic doses (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 mg kg⁻¹ feed), each with three replicates. Relative growth, feed efficiency, protein retention, and lipid retention were measured as response variables. Research data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s multiple range test at a 5% significance level. The results showed that dietary Lactobacillus supplementation significantly affected all measured parameters (P<0.05). Fish fed the diet supplemented with 15 mg kg⁻¹ probiotic exhibited the highest relative growth, feed efficiency, and protein retention. In contrast, higher probiotic doses did not further improve growth performance and were associated with decreased feed efficiency. Lipid retention was highest in the control group and significantly lower in probiotic supplemented treatments. These findings indicate that Lactobacillus sp. supplementation at 15 mg kg⁻¹ feed is the optimal dose for improving growth performance while reducing lipid deposition. Abstract

Degradation of natural coral reef ecosystems in the coastal waters of Kilo Lima Beach due to anthropogenic activities has led to a decline in reef fish populations. The installation of artificial reefs has emerged as a rehabilitation strategy to provide new habitats for marine biota. This study aims to identify species diversity, population abundance, and the distribution of ichthyofauna across three types of artificial reef structures (Kubah, Dinoreef, and Carreef) in the waters of Kilo Lima Beach, Banggai Regency. This study evaluates the effectiveness of artificial reefs in Kilo Lima waters (April 2025–April 2026) using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. Results indicate that artificial reefs significantly increase reef fish richness and density. Dinoreef recorded the highest species richness (47 species), while carreef reached the highest population density (5.7 ind/m²). The community is dominated by major fish groups (>80%), confirming the artificial reefs' function as a refuge area. The highest diversity index was achieved five months post-deployment (H’ = 3.50) before declining due to the dominance of specific species. The presence of associated biota and optimal water quality confirm a successful ecological succession. In conclusion, artificial reefs are effective in rehabilitating marine ecosystems, though long-term monitoring is essential for optimal community stability. Abstract

The availability of quality jelawat fish seeds as input for enlargement activities is still experiencing problems, especially continuity. One way to improve the availability of high-quality seeds are through the application of artificial spawning using the hormone Ovaprim. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal dose of the Ovaprim hormone for artificial spawning and the reproductive performance of jelawat fish (Leptobarbus hoevenii). The study was conducted for three months, from April to June 2024, at the Telanaipura Ornamental Fish Facility of the Jambi Provincial Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. This study employed a completely randomised design with four treatments and three replicates. The treatments used were ovaprim dose of 0.3 ml/kg (P1), ovaprim dose of 0.5 ml/kg (P2), ovaprim dose of 0.7 ml/kg (P3) and ovaprim dose of 0.9 ml/kg (P4). The test parameters included latency time, fecundity, egg diameter, fertilization rate and hatching rate. The results showed that the shortest latency time was observed in treatment P4, at 2.67 hours, whilst the longest latency time occurred in treatment P1, at 13.67 hours. Fecundity values ranged from 23.767 to 28.338 eggs. Egg diameter ranged from 0.70 to 0.82 mm. The highest fertilization rate was observed in treatment P3 at 84.04%, whilst the lowest fertilization rate was observed in treatment P1 at 45%. The highest hatching rate was observed in treatment P3 at 84.97%, whilst the lowest hatching rate was observed in treatment P1 at 28.00 %. This study found that a dose of 0.7 ml/kg of the hormone ovaprim was the most effective, yielding the highest fertilisation and hatching rates compared to the other treatments. Abstract

Female seurukan fish exhibit relatively slow growth compared to male seurukan. Therefore, the application of simple genetic reproduction technology through reversal sex could be a solution to this problem. The research was conducted from August to December 2025 at the Mina Mandiri Research Institute (UPR Mina Mandiri), Beutong District, Nagan Raya Regency, and the Aquaculture Systems and Environment Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, and the Hatchery of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Teuku Umar University, West Aceh. This study used five treatments and three replications: P0: treatment without immersion at 28oC, P1: immersion treatment at the embryonic phase at 30oC, P2: immersion treatment at the embryonic phase at 32oC, P3: immersion treatment at the larval phase at 30oC, and P4: immersion treatment at the larval phase at 32oC. The results showed that different temperature and time immersions had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the degree of hatching and sex identification, but did not affect the level of abnormality and survival rate of seurukan fish. Treatment P2 was the optimal treatment with a hatching rate percentage of 86.33±2.08% and sex identification of 80±0.00%. Abstract

The Indo-Pacific gaper Champsodon nudivittis is a Lessepsian migrant species that has recently expanded its distribution in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. A total of 245 individuals (131 females and 114 males) were collected by commercial bottom trawling from depths of 42–70 m along the Mersin Bay coast between September and November 2023. The estimated b values indicated positive allometric growth in both sexes, suggesting favorable environmental conditions and successful establishment of the species in the study area. The length–length relationship between the three length measurements (TL-FL-SL) was highly correlated (r2>0.97, P<0.001). This research is the first reference on length-weight relationship, length-length relationships, and also a new maximum length (as 14.5 cm TL) from the Northeastern Mediterranean coast of Türkiye (Mersin Bay). The high number of collected individuals indicates that the species forms a resident population rather than representing occasional records. These findings provide baseline biological data for monitoring the spread and potential ecological effects of this non-native species in the northeastern Mediterranean ecosystem. Abstract

This study aims to examine the morphometric and meristic characteristics of pora-pora fish (Mystacoleucus padangensis) found downstream of the Bah Bolon River, Simalungun. Sampling was carried out from April to June 2024 with a total of 58 fish. Measurement results showed that the length of the pora-pora fish ranged from 12 - 17 cm, with a weight range of 25 - 69 g. From the morphometric and meristic measurements, it can be concluded that the growth pattern of pora-pora fish is positively allometric (b>3) with a regression coefficient (b) of 3.4945 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.9246, which means that the increase in fish weight is faster than the increase in body length. The condition factor of pora-pora fish in the Bah Bolon River was found to range from 0.7 - 1.23, categorized as lean and underweight fish. Abstract

Chicken feathers contain about 80–90% protein, but the keratin type is poorly digestible, requiring fermentation. This study aimed to analyze the effect of substituting fish meal with fermented feather meal on the growth and survival of barramundi (Lates calcarifer). The research was conducted from March 8 to April 5, 2025, at the Hatchery and Aquaculture Technology Laboratory, Malikussaleh University. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and three replications was used: A (0%), B (5%), C (10%), D (15%), and E (20%) substitution levels of fermented feather meal. Parameters observed included feed response, absolute growth in length and weight, feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), water quality, and feed proximate and organoleptic tests. The results showed that substituting fish meal with fermented feather meal significantly affected growth and feed efficiency (P<0.05). The best results were obtained in treatment D (15%) with an average length of 2.02 cm, weight of 2.28 g, FCR of 1.56, and survival rate of 83.33%. Water quality parameters remained within optimal ranges: temperature 25.8–29.1°C, pH 7–8.8, DO 4.6–6.44 ppm, and salinity 15 ppt. Keywords: Barramundi; Chicken Feather Meal; Fermented; Feed; Growth
