Abstract

School-age children are approved as agents of change, easy, motivated, and competent. The right media will facilitate the delivery of messages, set more goals, save time, and reduce misunderstanding of the recipient of the message. The study aimed to determine the differences in knowledge about nutrition using pop up book media, PGS cards, and leaflets to improve PGS knowledge, attitudes and behavior in elementary school students. Quasi-experimental research design was pre-post test with control group design in 3 groups in 3 different elementary schools. The sample of 123 students who were divided into intervention groups were given counseling from PGS with pop up book media and PGS cards and control groups using leaflet media. Intervention was given 4 times for 8 weeks (counseling every 2 weeks). Data analysis using paired t-test and ANOVA test. The results of the analysis showed that the highest mean in knowledge score (15.00 ± 3.35) and significant was found in the PGS cards group (p = 0.017). No increase in attitude and behavior scores (p>0.05) in all media. Only the average knowledge score showed a significant difference between media (p = 0.001). Thus, it can be concluded that there are differences in students' knowledge about PGS between before and after PGS counseling using nutritional promotion media (pop up book, PGS card, and leaflets) and otherwise with attitudes and behavior.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a condition of female adolescent experiencing a lack of energy and protein intakes for a long period. Nowadays social media is a popular media among adolescents. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of social media in improving nutrition knowledge, energy and protein intakes of CED?s adolescent girls in rural and urban areas. A quasi experimental research design with one group pre-test post-test was applied, subject was taken with a purposive technique. A total of 56 CED teenage girls from SMAN 1 Baturraden represented rural group and 54 CED teenage girls from SMAN 5 Purwokerto represented urban group were taken. Knowledge was measured using a knowledge questionnaire, data on energy and protein intakes were collected  using 2x24 hour Food Recall. Statistical analysis used were dependent T-test, Wilcoxon, Independent T-test, and Mann-Whitney. The average change in nutritional knowledge scores was 2.71 in rural area, and 2.48 in urban area. Average changes in energy intake in rural area was  510.66 kcal, and urban area was 592.43 kcal. Average changes in protein intake in rural area was 24.78 g, and urban area was 20.78 g. There was a difference before and after nutrition education on nutrition knowledge, energy intake, protein intake in rural areas (p = 0.000) and urban areas (p = 0.000). There was no difference in increasing nutritional knowledge (p = 0.899), energy intake (p = 0.426), protein intake (p = 0.663) between rural and urban areas. There were differences in nutrition knowledge, energy and protein intakes, before and after social media-based nutrition education given in rural and urban areas. However, the amount of improvement in the score of nutritional knowledge and energy-protein intakes, did not differ between rural and urban areas.

Abstract

Nutrition and health behavior during pregnancy has an impact on fetal health and outcome birth. The aims of this study were to analyze the relationship between nutrition and hydration knowledge on maternal attitudes and behavior during pregnancy. This study was a cross-sectional study, conducted in Kebon Jeruk District Health Center, West Jakarta. The research subjects were pregnant women in the second and third trimesters who examined their pregnancies at the study site, totaling 100 subjects. The data collected were characteristics subjects, anthropometrics, level of knowledges, attitudes, and behaviors. Data was taken through interviews and anthropometric measurements by enumerators and health professional trainee. Pearson's correlation and chi-square tests were used to analyze data.Subjects were on average 29.0 ± 5.7 years, body weight 54.3 ± 8.6 kg, body height 153.7 ± 5.4 cm, body mass index 23.0 ± 3.8 kg/m2, upper arm circumference 26.4 ± 3.3 cm, and hemoglobin level 11.9 ± 0.9 g/dL. There was a positive relationship between nutrition and hydration knowledge on the behavior of pregnant women (p<0.05).The proportion of mothers in the high-level group had a positive attitude about water consumption when nausea and vomiting were more than those with low-level group (p<0.05).Mothers with a high-level group of knowledge have a tendency to have frequent water consumption and vary in diet from the low-level group (p <0.05).Therefore, the health professional needs to give the nutrition education which reliable and accurate to pregnant women in antenatal care.

Abstract

Disease treatment and prevention can be done by providing appropriate dietary therapy, such as the use of functional food. Growol, cassava fermented food, is potentially developed as functional food. Cassava fermentation process into growol can change growol?s prebiotic potency. Aim of this study was to know growol?s prebiotic potency as a functional food based on carbohydrate changes. This was an observational laboratory study. Samples of this study were cassava and growol. Cassava used in this study was Manihot esculenta Crantz. The prebiotics potency was seen from carbohydrate, reducing sugar, sucrose and dietary fiber content. Carbohydrate was analyzed using carbohydrate by difference, while reducing sugar and sucrose were analyzed using Nelson-Somogyi and enzymatic hydrolysis. Gravimetric AOAC enzymatic was used to measure dietary fiber content. Dependent t-test was used to determine the prebiotic potency differences in growol and cassava. Fermentation of cassava into growol statistically reduced total sugar (p=0.001), reducing sugar (p=0.002), and sucrose (p=0.003). Furthermore, fermentation process of cassava into growol increased carbohydrate (p=0.038); insoluble dietary fiber (p=0.005); soluble dietary fiber (p=0.048); and dietary fiber (p=0.005). In conclusion, growol can be potentially developed as functional food in terms of carbohydrate changes, and it expected to be used in disease treatment and prevention. Further studies can examine changes of other nutritional compounds in growol due to fermentation. Moreover, study about health effects of growol administration is needed to be done.

Abstract

Anemia is highly prevalent among Indonesian community, especially in pregnant women. Sleep duration and poor sleep patterns when someone is pregnant mayincrease therisk factors that affect the outcome of pregnancy. Protein requirements for pregnant women will increase as increasing gestational age. Lack of protein intake maycause low birth weight. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlationof sleeping duration and protein intake in anemic pregnant women with the incidence of low birth weight babies. The study used a case control design. The subject of the study was anemic pregnant women in Sukoharjo who have been gaving birth from 2016 to 2018. Subjects wereselected using purposive sampling. Case was those who delivered normal baby?s weight and case was those who delivered low bird weight baby. 74 subjcts were in control group and 37 subjects were in case group.Sleeping duration was measured during sleep at night per hour and the quality of sleeping using PSQI from. Path analysiswasused to evaluate the association. The results showed that the association of sleeping duration of anemic pregnant women with incidence of LBW was not significant (p=0,285); protein intake withincidence of LBW was significant (p=0,019), and sleep quality anemic pregnant women with incidence of LBW was not significant (p=0,379). There is no significant direct and indirect associations (through sleep quality) of sleeping duration among anemic pregnant women withincidence of LBW, there is a significant associationof protein intake in anemic pregnant women with incidence of LBW, and there is no significant indirect association (through sleep quality) of protein intake in anemic pregnant women with incidence of LBW babies.
