Abstract

School-age children are approved as agents of change, easy, motivated, and competent. The right media will facilitate the delivery of messages, set more goals, save time, and reduce misunderstanding of the recipient of the message. The study aimed to determine the differences in knowledge about nutrition using pop up book media, PGS cards, and leaflets to improve PGS knowledge, attitudes and behavior in elementary school students. Quasi-experimental research design was pre-post test with control group design in 3 groups in 3 different elementary schools. The sample of 123 students who were divided into intervention groups were given counseling from PGS with pop up book media and PGS cards and control groups using leaflet media. Intervention was given 4 times for 8 weeks (counseling every 2 weeks). Data analysis using paired t-test and ANOVA test. The results of the analysis showed that the highest mean in knowledge score (15.00 ± 3.35) and significant was found in the PGS cards group (p = 0.017). No increase in attitude and behavior scores (p>0.05) in all media. Only the average knowledge score showed a significant difference between media (p = 0.001). Thus, it can be concluded that there are differences in students' knowledge about PGS between before and after PGS counseling using nutritional promotion media (pop up book, PGS card, and leaflets) and otherwise with attitudes and behavior.

Abstract

Background: Complementary Feeding (CF) is one of the important factors in efforts to prevent malnutrition. There is a phenomenon of stunting prevalence increasing 1.6 times at the age of 6-24 months where this phase is the phase of CF. Objectives: Understanding the obstacles in the practice of CF in rural areas. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive qualitative research is used to explore the phenomenon of obstacles experienced in depth. The data collection method included in-depth interviews with mothers whose children aged 6-23 months experiencing stunting. Triangulation methods are carried out by interviewing husbands, grandmothers, and health cadres. Results: This study provides an overview of specific barriers to CF practices, such as picky eating, the onset of allergic reactions, and the risk of choking. The practical obstacles experienced are pressure from families and the environment to provide CF prematurely, limited time to prepare CF, and financial limitations to access healthier food. Obstacles that come from mothers, such as inadequate knowledge about CF cause concern, as well as the lack of time that mothers have to make CF independently. Support also plays an important role in the success of CF that comes from families and health cadres in the form of community-based education. Conclusions: The main obstacles to CF experienced by mothers are the lack of proper knowledge and behavior, as well as limited socio-economic support. To increase the success of the CF program, interventions that include continuing education, increased family support, and strengthening support networks at the community level are recommended.

Abstract

Gross motor skills training on cognitive function in early primary schoolBackground: Low gross motor skills are associated with low physical activity in preschool and elementary school children. Children's gross motor skills are correlated with obesity and contribute to physical activity participation and physical, social, and cognitive growth. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of gross motor skills training intervention on the cognitive function of early elementary school children. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest with a control design. The study involved first-year children from two elementary schools in Pleret, Bantul, DIY, with a total of 90 participants (49 boys, 41 girls) and a mean age of 7 years. The intervention consisted of motor skills training, including obstacle courses and walking on a balance beam, with each session lasting 15 minutes and conducted once a week for nine weeks. Cognitive function in terms of memory and attention abilities was assessed using the Stroop test (Stroop color and word test) and the digit span test (forward and backward)—data analysis using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test.Results: The study's results indicated a significant difference in the mean scores of the Stroop test for both the intervention and control groups and the digit span test for the intervention group. The findings suggested that motor skills training intervention significantly positively affected children's cognitive function, particularly with the Stroop test. Conclusions: Gross motor skill training can enhance the cognitive function of children aged 6-7. Motor skill instruction should be incorporated into preschool and early elementary school programs to help narrow the academic achievement gap.

Abstract

Household food security and children's dietary quality as determinants of stuntingBackground: Nutritional status is determined by dietary intake, which reflects the dietary quality. Poor dietary quality directly contributes to dietary problems in toddlers and is strongly associated with household food security. Objective: This study aims to determine the correlation of family food security and dietary quality with stunting among toddlers. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 104 toddlers aged 2-5 years who reside in the working area of Pleret Community Health Center, Bantul. Family food security was measured using the United States Household Food Security Survey Module (US-HFSSM) questionnaire. Diet quality scores were assessed using a three-level Balanced Nutrition Index (IGS3-60) based on the type of food and portions adjusted to the portions for toddlers according to the Balanced Nutrition Guidelines (PGS). Data analysis used the Chi-Square test. Results: More than half of toddlers (51%) live in food-insecure households. According to the IGS3-60, most toddlers (93.3%) show poor dietary quality. The average daily portion sizes and IGS3-60 scores for all food components are below the recommended standards of the PGS, except for animal protein, which meets the standard of three portions per day with an IGS3-60 score of 8.3 ± 3.0. Vegetables were the least consumed food group, as shown by both the average daily portions and IGS3-60 scores. Correlation analysis showed that milk consumption portions were the only dietary factor significantly associated with stunting, based on the height-for-age Z-score (p = 0.032).Conclusions: Household food security and children’s dietary quality were not associated with stunting. However, the daily portion of milk is associated with stunting.
