We are a journal on archaeology published by Balai Arkeologi Yogyakarta every May and November each year. This journal seek to promote and shares research results and ideas on archaeology to the public. We covers original research results, ideas, theories, or other scientific works from the discipline of Archaeology mainly in the Indonesian Archipelago and Southeast Asia. Interest from other disciplines (such as history, anthropology, architecture, geology, etc.) must be related to archaeological subject to be covered in this journal. Our first edition was published on March 1980.

Abstract

Radiocarbon dating is a tool for age determination of a carbon sample. During the time, synthesis benzene method is used for age determination mentioned. By this method it could be analyzed one sample per day only with high material cost. Lately, it has been developed a new method, namely CO2 absorption method. The latest method is often called as direct counting CO2, because radioisotope of 14C in CO2 is counted directly and converted to age. The aim of the development and the use of the method are supporting some research in isotope hydrology, oceanography, climatology, geology, and archeology by faster, economic and practice. The result of 14C analyses for the same sample using the CO2 absorption when compared to the synthesis benzene method is relatively equal.

Abstract

Gunung Wingko is one of the Bronze Age sites located in Bantul Regency or approximately 25 km south from Yogyakarta city and 1.5 km from Indian Ocean coastline. This site became known in 1972, and since then an intensive research had been conducted there, surveys as well as excavations. Information related to the Gunung Wingko community life reconstruction has been obtained from the research. However, nowadays the site seemed to be forgotten within the contexts of historical reconstruction, in particular by the community of Yogyakarta and its nearby surrounding. The fast change of land use has caused damage to the site research has provided some culture information but in the other hand the management and utilization of the research results are still minimal. In this paper will be discussed how to utilize result in Gunung Wingko site based on conservation efforts. The Results of this paper are expected to be used as a reference to managing the site.

Abstract

Study of Neolithic settlement pattern in Ranu Grati area at Pasuruan-East Java is a part of research series on the ancient settlements at the lakes area in East Java, conducted by author since 2008. Research has been csttied out every year in a row starting from Ranu Klakah, Ranu Gedang, Ranu Segaran, Ranu Bethok, and Ranu Grati. Eventhough in its early stage of research, the results are quite promising, both geoarchaeological and archaeological landscape as well as its artifactual data. Lake terraces as geo-archaeological data and artifacts such as pottery sherds, net-sinkers, and Neolithic adze are evidences of settlement in Grati Lake area.

Abstract

Borobudur temple has been famously known as one of the Indonesian heritage masterpiece. Various aspects of it had been studied thoroughly since the beginning of 20th century A.D. Those studies tended to be monumental centric, giving less attention to the cultural context of the temple and its surroundings. Settlement in the nearby places is one of the topics which not have been studied much yet; leaving a big question about how the settlement supported continuity of many activities in the temple, or even the other way around; how the temple affected the settlement. There is only a few data about old settlement found in situ in Borobudur site, only abundance of pottery sherds. The analysis applied on to the potteries find during the 2012 excavation had given some information about the old settlement in Borobodur site. The old settlement predicted as resided in the south west area, in the back side of the monument.

Abstract

Forensic archeology is defined as the application of archaeological principles and techniques in medico-legal and/or humanity context related to buried evidence. Forensic archaeologist has two roles, as the expert who unearth buried objects systematically and reconstruct them. This paper discusses the role of archeology and archaeologists in the excavation of criminal, humanitarian and disaster victims. Archaeologist’s role to reveal paleoanthropological materials smuggled and theft is also discussed in this paper. Humanitarian missions to investigate mass grave of victims of war, political strife and genocide in the past and the present are other archaeologist’s role discussed in this paper. The existence, condition and development of forensic archaeology in Indonesia emphasize the significance of new paradigm in Indonesian archaeology. Forensic archeology not merely focusess on the study of cultural materials of the past, education and museum development, cultural resource management and its advocacy, but it also has role in medico-legal works. Forensic archaeologist also engages in disaster victim identification (DVI) that addresses issues related to victims buried by either natural or human disasters.
