Abstract

Obesity is a disease with a significant increasing prevalence that affects body circumference and becomes an indicator of health measurement. Exercise programs need to be given to determine the effectiveness of the program on the changes in body circumference of patients with obesity status, such as PIR Fit Journey which applies High Intensity Interval Training exercise with 2-month duration. The research method used quantitative approach with pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design. Subjects were employees of Pertamina International Refinery with adiposity. The total samples were 11 samples taken from 63 population. The main characteristics included body weight exceeding 70kg for men and women. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling technique. The data obtained included age, gender, upper arm, waist, and thigh circumference measured using a body meter. The data analysis test used in the study was a non-parametric test because the subject n= 30. The appropriate non-parametric test is the Wilcoxon paired test because the pre-test and post-test data were from the same subject. The results showed the effectiveness of the exercise program with significant changes. The upper arm circumference was 39.27 ± 10.77 for pre-test data and 32.64 ± 2.96 Δ -6.64 ρ .05 for post-test data. The waist circumference was 106.44 ± 11.39 for pre-test data and 96.36 ± 9.10 Δ -10.08 ρ .05 for post test data. However, the data were not significant in thigh circumference. The pre-test result was 52.63 ± 13.72 and the post-test result was 56.60 ± 7.46 Δ +3.98 ρ .05. It concludes that PIR Fit Journey program was effective in reducing upper arm and waist circumference, but there was no significant change in thigh circumference of the subjects.

Abstract

Despite its popularity to enhance physical, emotional, and social skills, the existing studies mostly focus on athletes coming from well-resourced environments, leaving a gap in understanding how these benefits manifest in resource-limited settings. This study examined the relationship between sport participation and personal development of collegiate basketball players in the Mindanao State University (MSU). Using a descriptive-correlational approach, this research assessed sport participation using related variables, such as active years, training volumes, and competition levels. To measure personal development, life skill indicators, such as leadership, teamwork, and communication, were used. Data were collected from 48 basketball players across several MSU campuses using standardized questionnaires. Results of the study revealed a significant positive correlation between prolonged sport participation and improved personal development, particularly in teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. The strongest correlation was found in the number of years of participation and training experience, with weaker associations for training frequencies and competition levels. These findings indicate that even in resource-limited environments, a consistent sport engagement could foster a meaningful personal growth. The study concludes that a structured sport program could contribute to a holistic development of athletes although additional resources and exposures to higher-level competitions could further enhance these benefits. Future research should investigate the impact of coaching quality and socio-cultural factors on personal development, particularly in under-resourced settings.

Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) are essential to prepare students to face challenges and make literacy activities more meaningful. However, several studies reported that Indonesian student HOTS are still low. HOTS need stimulus to develop optimally, especially for school age students (10-18 years) because, at that age, children are not yet able to think at a high level by themselves and the activity for stimulating HOTS in students is greatly affected by the teacher attitude to the value of stimulating HOTS itself. This study aimed to compare the attitude of Physical Education (PE) teachers in stimulating HOTS of students. The design of research used in this study was comparative design. The sample involved PE teachers teaching in West Sumatra province, totaling 129 people. The samples were drawn using self-selection sampling. The instrument used to measure teacher attitudes was the SHOT questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted with Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that the teacher attitudes based on school level and teaching experience obtained Sig 0.05, while the teacher attitudes according to certification status obtained Sig 0.05. It concludes that the attitude of teachers based on school level and teaching experience was not significantly different, while the teacher attitudes according to certification status was significantly different.

Abstract

Sport is believed to provide positive psychological benefits and support positive personal growth, including resilience, the ability to deal with stress. However, the research exploring positive benefits obtained by female athletes, especially after they retired as athletes, is scarce. This research aimed to comprehend whether the experience of being a national athlete supports the formation of resilience in women even after they retired as athletes. The research used a qualitative approach with semi-structured interview data collection methods. Participants were 7 former female athletes who had represented Indonesia at international events. All of them were retired and working as professionals. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using content analysis. The results of this research showed that the experience of pursuing a career to achieve international achievements had profound impacts on their life, especially when facing daily challenges in the workplace and at home which contribute to their resilience. Three dominant themes were articulated from the analysis, including discipline and self-regulation (such as having a regular scheduled routine, keeping to the time for every activity, and preparing early to achieve better results, affecting their succession in their current profession), the ability to reflect on emotions and control negative emotions (such as when life challenges cause emotional turmoil, past experience in sports at the national-international level provides reference to be competent in recognizing self-weaknesses leading to manage emotions in retrospective way), and opportunities for career achievements brought by involvement in sports at the national level, including the ‘dream career’, and wider networking access for career advancement and social supports. Considering the positive highlights of this results, it is recommended that policymakers support female participation more in elite sports and provide supportive environments for female athletes.

Abstract

Blind people often face barriers to access information, reducing their ability to participate fully in daily activities such as education, employment, finances, communication, recreation, and independence. This research used the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method to investigate developments in the use of assistive technology aimed at improving the mobility of people with visual impairments, especially in the context of runners. This study followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Data were collected from Google Scholar with the help of Harzing's Publish or Perish application. Of the 67 international journal articles downloaded, strict selection was carried out through inclusion and exclusion stages in accordance with established criteria, resulting in 6 journal articles that were relevant to the focus of this research. This study provided a systematic overview of the development of assistive technology to improve the mobility and independence of blind runners. Various technological innovations are discussed in this research, including electromagnetic navigation systems, mechatronics, navigation for marathons, smartphone applications (SPAs), and devices such as EyeVista. The research results conclude that these technologies have great potential to improve mobility and independence of blind people, especially in physical activities such as running. These innovations help individuals navigate complex environments, avoid obstacles, and participate in running with more confidence and independence. Although there are challenges that need to be overcome, the potential of this technology is significant in supporting individuals to achieve a full independence and active participation. It is recommended to continue the research and development of the technology as well as increasing the collaboration among developers, researchers, and visually impaired communities, especially runners, to ensure more effective and widely accepted solutions.

Abstract

Referee is an important element in a football match. Just like an athlete, the mental aspect of a referee also greatly affects the performance of a football referee. This study aimed to determine the effect of mental fatigue on football referee decision making. The method used in this study was an experimental method with a pre-post-test design. Participants of this study consisted of 28 football referees selected using a purposive sampling technique. Participants consisted of male referees with amateur and professional background levels and having more than three years of experience. In this study, the FIFA Video test 2024 was used as a decision-making instrument. Based on the results of data processing and analysis using the paired sample T-Test, a significance value of 0.000 was obtained, indicating that there was a significant effect of mental fatigue on football referee decision making. This indicates that a referee ability to manage psychological aspects can help them overcome mental fatigue which could affect referees in making the right decisions in football matches.

Abstract

Traditional physical education approaches, which often focus on decontextualized sports techniques, may affect the student engagement leading to learning difficulties. The Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model, which emphasizes game understanding and skill development through actual plays, offers a pedagogical alternative. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of using TGfU with modified traditional games, specifically the Kasti game, to improve the game understanding of primary school students. The pre-experimental design, specifically the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design, was used. This study involved 24 Grade 5 students from a public primary school in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The TGfU model was implemented using a modified version of the Kasti game adapted to the school curriculum. The game comprehension was measured using the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI), focusing on decision-making, skill execution, and covering ability. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests to compare pretest and posttest results. Results of this study found a significant improvement in the student game comprehension after the intervention. The mean scores for skill execution, decision-making, and covering ability increased the overall game understanding from the pretest mean of 0.61 to the posttest mean of 0.67. The number of students categorized in the Effective Performance category increased, indicating improved cognitive and tactical understanding. The study concludes that TGfU, which incorporates modified traditional games, could effectively improve game understanding of primary school students. This approach could enhance student cognitive abilities and increase their enjoyment and engagement in sports. These findings suggest that TGfU is a viable model for teaching physical education.

Abstract

Classic and modern swings are movements that are often performed when playing golf with the main difference laid in the position of torso and pelvis. In addition to the swing pattern which already has its own advantages and disadvantages, the same type of swing movement in reality is likely to be executed differently by one golfer to another. The differences in golf swings, biomechanically from address to follow-through, aims to affect the level of performance of a golfer. However, it is necessary to find out biomechanical positions and conditions that have significant influence on golf performance when performing golf swings and shot. This study aimed to determine how the biomechanics of golf swings influence the performance of adult golfers through an evidence-based case report. The search of articles applied a number of inclusion criteria. The articles were searched from Pubmed, Cochrane, Scopus, and manual searches. The result was displayed in the PRISMA Flowchart.  Based on the search results, 15 articles were found and met the eligibility criteria. The articles included 1 Systematic Review, 5 experimental studies, and 9 cohorts. The articles show that the angle between thorax and pelvis and the ability to control spinal movement will change the X-factor, while the X-factor stretch affects performance. Weight transfer location, grip position, gender differences, golf functional movement, and skill level also determine performance. X-factor, X-factor stretch, crunch factor, including grip position, and stance are components that can differentiate golfer performance. Understanding the biomechanics factors of an individually-tailored golf swing can help optimize a golfer performance. Further research is expected to include Indonesian golfers, with various handicap levels for the subject criteria, by using various designs, such as RCTs and cohort studies.
