Abstract

Social dancing is an important yet understudied form of physical culture in Philippine community life. This qualitative case study examined how Western-originated social dances were adapted and sustained in communities across the Southern Philippines, focusing on their roles in physical activity, social connection, and cultural continuity. Eighteen participants, including dancers, instructors, organizers, and cultural workers, were engaged through semi-structured interviews, participant observation at twelve dance events, and document review. Thematic analysis identified four key dimensions, namely cultural adaptation through local music and movement, inclusive participation across diverse groups, institutional support from schools and local governments, and psychosocial benefits such as well-being, identity affirmation, and community bonding. The findings indicate that social dancing functions as an accessible physical recreation while also supporting cultural transmission and community cohesion. The study contributes to scholarship on physical culture in Southeast Asia and offers implications for physical education, community health, and cultural preservation.

Abstract

This preliminary study examined the impact of integrating three traditional Kerinci games, including Rakalah, Conce, and Prakeja, into elementary school physical education learning on student cooperation and self-discipline. A total of 30 students in grades IV and V participated in 16 meetings within a single-group pretest-posttest design. Cooperation and self-discipline were measured using a questionnaire that had been tested for its validity and reliability, then analyzed using a paired t-test and Cohen's d effect size. The cooperation score increased from 38.77 to 45.60, while the self-discipline score increased from 38.33 to 42.40. This study is expected to enrich the evidence for cultural pedagogy, showing that local games can serve as a vehicle for character education in physical education learning. Teachers can use traditional games as core activities and as part of P5 activities to practice role coordination, rule adherence, and value reflection. However, because the design lacked a control group and the measurements were self-report-based, the findings need to be confirmed through quasi-experimental or experimental studies using observational data.

Abstract

The balance between stress and recovery is essential to maintain sport performance and wellbeing. The Recovery-Stress Questionnaire for Athletes (RESTQ-Sport-76) has been widely used internationally to measure psychosocial dimensions. However, the Indonesian version has not undergone formal psychometric evaluation. This study aimed to conduct an initial validation and reliability testing of the Indonesian version of RESTQ-Sport-76 in sport science students. A cross-sectional quantitative design was used, involving 120 sport science students (74% male, aged 18-23 years) recruited through purposive sampling. The instrument, adapted through forward-backward translation and expert review, was distributed via an online form. Data analysis included item-total correlation for construct validity, Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using SPSS AMOS to assess model fit. Most subscales showed good validity (r ≥ 0.50) and adequate internal reliability (α ≥ 0.70). The initial CFA indicated suboptimal fit for general stress and recovery dimensions (CFI = 0.666; RMSEA = 0.102), which improved after model revision (CFI = 0.930; RMSEA = 0.055). Similarly, the sport stress and sport recovery model fit improved from CFI = 0.866 to 0.973 after refinement. In conclusion, the Indonesian version of RESTQ-Sport-76 demonstrated satisfactory initial validity and reliability, supporting its use as a preliminary tool for monitoring stress and recovery among sport students. Nonetheless, several subscales, particularly related to conflict/pressure and sleep quality, require further semantic refinement and longitudinal testing before large-scale practical application.

Abstract

A vital defense against rule infractions that could endanger athletes' careers and the integrity of sport is doping knowledge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Indonesian athletes' knowledge of doping and investigate how it relates to sociodemographic traits. A cross-sectional quantitative survey was completed by 436 athletes from different sports disciplines. Four knowledge domains were covered by the instrument: national anti-doping organizations, legal regulations, prohibited substances, and the definition of doping. The findings showed that athletes were generally aware of the existence of anti-doping organizations and the idea of doping. Nonetheless, there were still a lot of common misconceptions about prohibited substances. Many respondents believed that therapeutic-use drugs such as insulin and erythropoietin (EPO) were unrestricted, or they confused legal supplements with doping. While no significant differences were observed by gender, sport type, competition level, or medal achievement, knowledge varied significantly by age (p = 0.001), student status (p = 0.001), and athletic experience (p = 0.011). These findings highlight the need for more contextualized, practice-oriented anti-doping education tailored to athletes’ backgrounds. Strengthening evidence-based education may foster a cleaner and more ethical sporting environment in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of the neuroplasticity-based adaptive physical education learning model on motor development in early childhood and to understand teacher experiences in designing and implementing this learning strategy. The study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, complemented by a qualitative case study approach. The study participants consisted of 25 children aged 5–6 years and a class teacher at a kindergarten selected purposively. Quantitative data were obtained through motor development tests administered before and after the implementation of adaptive physical education. Quantitative data analysis was conducted using descriptive-comparative analysis to compare pre-test and post-test scores on child motor development. Meanwhile, qualitative data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation analyzed using an interactive analysis model that included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed an increase in child motor development scores after the neuroplasticity-based adaptive physical education intervention. Qualitative findings revealed three main themes, namely adaptation of activities to individual child needs, increased self-confidence and involvement in child movement activities, and strengthened social interactions during the learning process. These findings suggest that varied and progressive movement stimulation can support optimal motor development through contextualized learning that is responsive to the characteristics of early childhood. This research provides theoretical contributions to the integration of neuroscience with early childhood physical education, as well as practical implications for the development of more adaptive and evidence-based learning models in early childhood education settings.

Abstract

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) commonly occurs after high-intensity resistance training, marked by elevated creatine kinase (CK) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, which reflect muscle damage and oxidative stress. Nutritional interventions such as royal jelly, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may aid in post-exercise recovery. However, limited evidence exists regarding its effectiveness in sports gel form following intense resistance training. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of royal jelly-based sports gel on CK and MDA levels after high-intensity resistance exercise. This pilot randomized, single-blind crossover study included ten healthy male participants. Participants performed high-intensity squats and leg presses (80-90% of maximal capacity) in four sets with one-minute rest intervals. Baseline CK and MDA levels were measured 24 hours before consumption of either royal jelly-based sports gel or placebo. Post-intervention measurements were taken 24 hours later, followed by a washout period and crossover to the alternate treatment. The results revealed that royal jelly significantly reduced CK and MDA levels compared to placebo. At 96 hours post-exercise, CK decreased by approximately 10.3% in the royal jelly condition compared with 3.4% in placebo, while MDA decreased by 24.2% versus 6.2%, respectively. These findings provide preliminary evidence that royal jelly-based sports gel may contribute to improved recovery following high-intensity resistance exercise. However, results should be interpreted cautiously due to the small sample size.

Abstract

This study investigated whether structured movement programs work differently for children at varying developmental levels using a 2×2 factorial quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest measurements. Forty-eight children aged 5-6 years from an Islamic Kindergarten in Kuningan Regency were assigned to groups using intact classroom placement (no individual randomization). Developmental maturity was operationalized through age-based classification, including low maturity (5.0-5.5 years) and high maturity (5.6-6.0 years). The four-week intervention (eight 45-minute sessions) compared structured versus conventional activities across maturity levels. Motor skills were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development Third Edition (TGMD-3), while motivation, confidence, and understanding of physical activity were measured using an adapted early-childhood physical literacy questionnaire (α = .81). Results showed that while structured programs benefited everyone, their impact on motor skills varied significantly by maturity level (F=15.89, p.001), with more mature children gaining greater advantages. Interestingly, benefits for motivation and confidence were similar across maturity levels. Within the limitations of this single-site study, the findings suggest that educators should implement structured movement programs while recognizing that motor skill benefits may vary according to developmental maturity, whereas affective outcomes, such as motivation and confidence, develop similarly across maturity levels.

Abstract

Inflammaging is a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition that contributes to sarcopenia and functional decline in older adults, primarily through elevated interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Resistance training has been proposed as a non-pharmacological strategy with potential anti-inflammatory effects. However, evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) remains inconsistent. This systematic review aimed to examine the effects of resistance training on IL-6 and TNF-α levels in adults aged ≥60 years. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines employing a narrative synthesis approach. RCTs published between 2010 and 2024 were retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus. Eight RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Four studies (50%) reported significant reductions in IL-6, while five studies (62.5%) demonstrated significant reductions in TNF-α. Pure resistance training showed greater consistency in reducing TNF-α compared to IL-6. Effective training protocols typically lasted 8–24 weeks, with a frequency of 2–3 sessions per week and intensities ranging from 60–80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). Resistance training appears to be effective in attenuating inflammatory biomarkers in older adults, particularly TNF-α. However, outcomes are influenced by exercise modality, duration, intensity, and participant characteristics. Further studies using standardized protocols and longer follow-up periods are warranted.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of interdisciplinary physical education learning on the fundamental movement and numeracy skills of students. An experimental research method was implemented by integrating interdisciplinary physical education with mathematics. The implementation was carried out for 12 meetings within a period of 6 weeks using a randomized pre-test post-test control group design. The research population was the third-grade students, totaling 4 classes consisted of 135 students. The cluster random sampling technique was used to determine research samples. Class III-B, consisting of 34 students, was selected as Experimental Group 1 (taught by a teacher experienced in interdisciplinary PE). Class III-A, with 33 students, was selected as Experimental Group 2 (taught by a teacher not experienced in interdisciplinary PE) and Class III-C, with 33 students, was selected as the Control Group. The treatment program was implemented for 12 meetings in 6 weeks. The instruments were TGMD-2 and AKM Numeracy test level 2. The results of the study showed a significant increase in the fundamental movement skills of students in Experimental Group 1 of 17.529 (Sig. 0.00) and a significant increase in numeracy abilities of 23.823 (Sig. 0.00). Meanwhile for Experimental Group 2, there was a significant increase in the fundamental movement skills of students of 11.515 (Sig. 0.00) and a significant increase in numeracy abilities of 21.591 (Sig. 0.00). The results of this study concludes that this interdisciplinary physical education program is feasible to be implemented to address the problems in fundamental movement skills and numeracy abilities, particularly in classes taught by experienced teachers.
