Abstract

This paper attempts to offer some efforts that can be applied or employed by teachers  in teaching learning activities to shape self-directed learners. It encompasses some theories about roles of teachers, roles of learners, the definition and characteristics of self-directed learners, the advantages of self-directed learning, and some possible tips of shaping self-directed learners. Some roles of teachers  are discussed in this paper to highlight that  teachers do not only teach and give some materials to be learned by their  learners but have great tasks, like  to be  a monitor of students learning, motivator, organizer, and controller of pupil behaviour, provider of accurate language models, counselor and friend, needs analyst, material developer, and evaluator (Richard :1990:4). Hence, a teacher must encourage learners to take on greater degree of responsibility for their own successful learning (Hedge, 2000:34) and a teacher must motivate and help the learners to gain and develop the executive control of their  learning strategies especially metacognitive strategies to teach them how to learn (Joyce, etal:  2009:16).Thus, some roles of learners become important to be included in this paper to assert that the burden of learning cannot be merely puored on the teacher but the learners  have some roles need to be contemplated for the success of teaching and learning.  Therefore, the integration of teacher - learner  awareness toward their roles in teaching learning process can be effectively shaped to generate self-directed learners.

Therefore, the sample of the study is 72 students consist two classes, namely: 36 students for control group and 36 students for experimental group. The sample was taken by using non purposisve random sampling method. The data collected by using written test consist of 30 questions and the type of questions is multiple choice.  The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test which were pair sample t-test and independent sample t-test was known as: mean of post test in expermental group was 72.22 higher than past test mean score of control group was 58.64. Furthermore, the result of t-obtained was 6.132 and t-table was 2.030, it shows that t-obtained was higher than t-table. From the explanation above, there were significant difference between the experimental group that have been taught by using jigsaw learning model and control group that was not taught using treatment. It means that, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It was concluded that it was effective of using jigsaw learning model to teach reading comprehension of spoof text to the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 13 Palembang.

Abstract

This study investigated whether or not self-esteem and TOEFL scores can influence students’ speaking 4 achievement. The population of this study was fourth, sixth, and eighth semester students of English Education Study Program, Muhammadiyah University of Palembang in academic year 2012/2013. The data were collected by documentation for speaking 4 achievement and TOEFL scores, and the data were collected by using questionaire for Self-esteem. The data were analyzed by using F-test and regression analysis. There was significant Influence between Self-esteem and speaking 4 score (r=0.206>0.05), TOEFL scores and speaking 4 score (r=0.123>0.05), Self-esteem and TOEFL score on speaking 4 score (r=.0.235>0.05). it was assumed that a fairly correlation between sudents’ Self-esteem and students’ TOEFL scores on their speaking 4 achievement was caused from the internal factor of  personal learner  as a speaker  or it might be untruthfullness of the  students’ Self-esteem when filling out the questionnaire and the limitation  of their second language foundation and their  reluctancy in  doing more  speaking.

Finnaly the calculation using a two-way ANOVA was used to measure an interaction between fishbowl technique and students interest on their speaking ability. Test of Between-Subjects Effects analyses, the significant value of the techniques (fishbowl and conventional) and the students’ interest were 0.422, the probability sig. of technique was 0.175, and the interaction between high and low interest was 0.097 which higher than the significant level of p-value 0.05, it meant that there was no a significant interactions between students’ interest and techniques. So, the research hypothesis that stated “there is no an interaction between fishbowl technique and interest toward students’ speaking ability” was accepted and the null hypothesis was not rejected based on the data finding on chapter four.
