Abstract

Objective of this research was to find out significant difference of reading achievement between students The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement in students' skill in writing narrative texts after they were taught by using Genre-Based Approach. The method of this study was experimental design. The experimental group received a genre-based approach while the control group received the conventional method. The population was the eleventh-grade students of SMA Ethika Palembang. The sample was 60 students which was selected by cluster random technique . The data collection was a writing test. The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. It indicated that there was a significant difference in writing skill between the students who were taught using GBA and those who were not.  Based on the result of data, it was interpreted that all aspects of writing are increased after taught by using GBA Approach. The best-achieved writing aspect was style and quality expression. It assumed the use of words: phrases, sentences, and paragraphs in expressing the ideas were clear and effective in writing style. Further, the study provided evidence for the effectiveness of using the genre-based approach in improving the students' writing skill in narrative text.

Abstract

This study aimed for finding out whether or not (1) there is a significant influence of intelligence quotient on students’ English achievement; (2) there is a significant influence of emotional quotient on students’ English achievement; (3) there is a significant influence of intelligence quotient and emotional quotient on students’ English achievement. The population of this study consisted of 223 students of the tenth grade student of senior high school 6 of Palembang. The sample was selected by using simple random sampling. The data were collected by using documentation, questionnaire, and tests. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic and inferential statistic (correlation and regression analyses), F-test for multiple correlation and t-test for partial correlation, significant 95% (0.05) by SPSS version 15. The result showed that there was a low correlation of intelligence quotient on students’ English achievement (r=0.364); there was a low correlation of emotional quotient on students’ English achievement (r=0.368); there was an enough correlation of intelligence quotient and emotional quotient on students’ English achievement (r=0.468). The influence of intelligence quotient was 0.133 (13.3%) on students’ English achievement. The influence of emotional quotient was 0.136 (13.6%) on students’ English achievement. The influence of intelligence quotient and emotional quotient were 0.219 (21.9%) on students’ English achievement. The variability of students’ English achievement could be explained 21.9% by intelligence quotient and emotional quotient. The rest (78.1%) was determined by other factors.

Abstract

English competence is always needed in this globalization era. TOEFL test is always used due to measure students’ ability in understanding English spoken and written. Grade Point Average (GPA) and religious performance practice are suspected whether or not influence students English language competence.  In this paper, religious practice and Grade Point Average (GPA) correlated to English language competence at the economic and business students’ faculty of Muhammadiyah University Palembang. Recent research demonstrated a positive correlation between religious practice and academic performance to English competence. Students’ religiosity was measured using Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS) ready-made questionnaire, while academic performance was measured by Grade Point Average (GPA) and TOEFL test was used to determine students’ English language competence. The statistical analysis revealed that there was no significant correlation between students’ religious performance to English language competence. Meanwhile, Grade Point Average showed positive correlation to English language competence.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the implementation of audio-visual media to improve students’ motivation in speaking English. The writer has conducted a Classroom Action Research. The subjects of this study were 31 students who belong to the XI IPA 1 class. This study used classroom action research in three cycles; the planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The score of speaking from cycle to cycle improved, the first students’ speaking performance result was the second result was, and the third was. Based on those score (from 1st cycle to 3rd cycle), showed how the implementation of audio-visual media that could be improved students’ motivation to speak English.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the correlation between students’ habit in watching English movie (X) and listening achievement(Y) by fourth semester students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang There were 47 students taken as the sample of this study who were determined by using purposive sampling technique. The collected data was analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the instruments used were students’ listening scores and questionnaire of students’ habit in watching English movie. Subsequently, the research finding indicated that there was low correlation between students’ habit in watching English movie and listening achievement. It proved by the obtain (0.212) which lower than r table (0.2845). It considered that alternative hypothesis (Ha) in this research was rejected and the null hypothesis (Ho) which stated that there was no correlation between students’ habit in watching English movie and their listening achievement accepted. In conclusion, there was low correlation between students’ habit in watching English movie and their listening achievement.

Abstract

The title of the research is “Using Small Guessing Words in Teaching Narrative Text to Improve Reading Comprehension of the Tenth Grade Students”. The problem in this research was formulated into a question: “Is it effective to improve students reading comprehension using Guessing Words from the Context to the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Palembang?” The Objective of this research was to find out whether or not it is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension using Guessing Words from the Context to the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Palembang. This research used the design of the quasi-experimental method. Researchers collected the data by using a written test. The result of the research was the students’ score in the experimental and the control group (value of t-obtained) using independent sample test was 4.341, it was higher than the critical value 2.000, at the significant level p<0.05. It was effective to improve students’ reading comprehension using Guessing Words from the Context to the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Palembang.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between students’ learning style preference and their speaking achievement. The data were collected by distributing questionnaire sheets and testing a speaking achievement test for 55 students. It used correlational study. There were two kinds of variables in this study, predictor and criterion variables. The predictor variable was students’ learning style preference (x), and the criterion variable was students’ speaking achievement (Y). The sample was divided into two groups; experimental and control group. There were 30 students for experimental group (VIII.6) and 25 students in a control group (VIII. 1). Pearson product moment coefficients correlation and regression analysis were used to find out whether or not there was a significant relationship between students’ learning styles preference toward speaking achievement of SMPN 12 Palembang. Only students’ learning style in the pre-test of the experimental group was significantly correlated to their speaking achievement. It was also supported by the regression analysis, learning style preference gave 19.4 % contribution to speaking achievement. The speaking test of post-experimental, pre-control, and post-control group was not correlated significantly to learning style preference. And contribution also vice versa. Those three scores from the speaking test did not contribute significantly to learning style preference.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the narrative structure or formula in several soccer-themed movies; namely Garuda di Dadaku, Shaolin Soccer, Bend it Like Beckham, Barefoot Dreams, and Air Bud 3: World Pup. The writers try to see the convention in the entire movies and show up the invention that makes the movie different from each other. In analyzing, the writers use the descriptive method and structuralism theory as the approach of popular literature. The result shows that there are six conventions; the introduction of the main character that have problems, the main character’s initiative to solve problems, the problem is slightly solved, the suspense of success, the increasingly complex problem in the climax, and happy ending. Meanwhile, the inventions contained in the movies are more about culture. The producers try to combine this ball theme with a culture that is prevalent in the community so that it feels more familiar with the audience being the target market.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze people's interest in learning English in the face of MEA (ASEAN Economic Community). So that the municipal government of Lubuklinggau can take steps to improve their English-language communication skills. The goal to be achieved by this research is to obtain the results analysis of public interest in learning English, so that from the results of this analysis the government can take steps to improve Human Resources to have good communication skills to deal with the free trade era. This research was conducted through a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis methods, Tehnique of Data Collection were conducted by observasion, questionnaire, and interview. From the research conducted it can be concluded that the interestt of Lubuklinggau community in learning English must still be increased in order to progress the Lubuklinggau region tobe advance.

Abstract

This research is aimed at figuring out the dominant type of language function used by five characters in The great Gatsby movie directed by Baz Luhrmann.This research applied a descriptive-qualitative method. The researchers used Holmes and Hazen’s theory to analyze the data. The results showed 304 utterances of language function  of 106 referential  and 198 expressive utterances. The first character, Nick Carraway uttered 25 referential utterances and 61 expressive utterances. The second one, Jay Gatsby uttered 37 referential utterances and 57 expressive utterances. The third one, Daisy Fay Buchanan uttered 12 referential utterances and 35 expressive utterances.The fourth one, Tom Buchanan uttered 28 referential utterances and 42 expressive utterances, and the last one, Myrtle Wilson uttered 4 referential utterances and 3 expressive utterances. In conclusion, the dominant type of language function found was expressive utterance of 198 expressions which was greater than referential utterances of 106 expressions.
