Abstract

The availability of the fuel oil in the world are declining, so that alternative energy is needed to meet the needs of the fuel. One of the alternative energy is biodiesel (ethyl/methyl ester). The research aimed to determine the optimal conversion value of ethyl ester, to identify ester components and their concentration. The biodiesel was produced from candlenut oil (Aleurites mollucana) ethanol by the ratio of 1:6 using 0.5% KOH catalyst which reacted by utilizing ultrasonic wave (47 kHz) for 45, 60 and 75 minutes. Biodiesel conversion value were 3.9%, 1.6% and 1.2% respectively. The biodiesel obtained then were analyzed by FTIR and result the pattern of fatty acid ethyl esters. In addition, analysis by GC-MS revealed the concentration under variation times of ethyl palmitate, ethyl linoleic, ethyl oleic and ethyl stearic from variation time  45,  60  and  75 minutes. They were 6.34%, 1.76% and 1.56%), (25.94%, 6.46% and 7.46%), (31.42%, 8.17% and 8.79%) and 2.13%.

Abstract

Kinetic study of the biodegradation petroleum waste by using biocompost was conducted to determine the concentrations of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) decline. It can be seen from the reaction kinetics of biodegradability by calculating the rate constant and reaction order of biodegradation of the petroleum waste. Otherwise it can be seen also from the activity of enzymes involved in the biodegradation namely enzymatic kinetics by measuring the value of Km and Vmax. Research methods are mixing biocompost and petroleum waste, measurement of pH, water content and determining the concentration of TPH at day 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35. The concentrations of TPH before and after biodegradation are 11.23% and 0.54%. The results show biodegradation by using biocompost can decrease the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons up to 95.19% within 35 days. The degradation rate is 0.502% per day while the rate constant is 0.0847 which relevant to the first-order reaction rate. The reaction kinetics of biodegradation by oxygenase enzyme show Vmax and Km value as 0.0834 and -0.9920, respectively.

Abstract

A molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) can be synthesized using functional monomers and template molecules through polymerization with the aid of cross linker. In previous studies, MIP_TFMAA-co-EGDMA was synthesized using the main ingredient tryfluoromethylacrylic acid (TFMAA) as functional monomer, b-sitosterol as a template molecule and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross linker. The ability of adsorption against the effects of pH and contact Time of MIP has been evaluated. Variations of pH standard solution b-sitosterol were 4, 5, 6, and 7, while the time variation used were 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The data of b- sitosterol concentrations adsorbed by MIP_TFMAA-co-EGDMA because of the influence of pH and contact times were analyzed using high pressure liquid  chromatography (HPLC). pH5 gives the most influence on the adsorption capacity MIP_TFMAA-co-EGDMA against b-sitosterol. The number of b-sitosterol adsorbed on the pH was 1.0265 mg/g, while at 90 minutes was the best time for the MIP b- sitosterol adsorb as much as 1.3486 mg/g. Based on the adsorption kinetics study, the adsorption ability MIP_TFMAA-co-EGDMA against b-sitosterol in accordance with the pseudo second order kinetic model.

Abstract

The motorized vehicle activities could result air pollution. One of the pollutan emitted from fuel process is lead which might be reduced by using Bogenvil plants (Bougainvillea spectabilis Wild). Bogenvil were planted in a 1 x 1,5 meter square sized green house where there is a particular hole to flow exhaust fume of motorized vehicle for an hour in each 3, 6, 9 and 12 day after the first exposure. The result shows that Bogenvil leaves have ability to absorb Pb metal emitted from vehicle in response  to the exposure time. The highest accumulation of Pb in the leave is 0,469 mg/Kg with exposure time of 12 days. For this reason, the Bogenvil plant can be used as bio- accumulator of timbale metal in the air.
