Abstract

Cancer has become a global health problem arisen from exposure to benzo(a)pyrene. Interleukin-2 is one of immune system components believed to play roles in eradicating cancer. Cobra venom has antitumor effect and also contain protease which could boost up immune system. This research was aimed at analyzing Naja sputatrix venoms effect to increase interleukin-2 level in blood sera of mice induced by benzo(a)pyrene. Four group of Balb-C mice were used. The first group (control) and second group (treatment with Naja sputatrix venom) consist of 5 mices. There are 6 mices used in group 3 and 4, both were injected intramuscularly by benzo(a)pyrene (0,3L/0,01mL oleum oil) at day 1, 8 and 15. Three months after, observation was carried out to see changes occured in their liver and lungs. Naja sputatrix venom 0,1 mL (diluted in saline 1:100) was given to group 2 and 4 for 30 days. Blood was collected from all groups and centrifuge to form sera. Level of interleukin-2 in sera was measured by ELISA method. The results show that Group 2 has the highest mean level of interleukin-2 (136,837 pg/mL), and group 3 has the lowest (8,996 pg/mL). Level of interleukin-2 in group 4 is slightly higher than group 3 (10,632 pg/mL). Kruskal-Wallis analysis result come with Sig. 0,155; therefore shows no significance(p>0,05). It is therefore concluded that Naja sputatrix venom do not increase interleukin-2 level in blood sera of mice induced by benzo(a)pyrene

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to develop a model of water table fluctuation on tidal lowland area of A/B type. The results of the research are expected to support of the agricultural development on tidal lowland area, especially on water management, because the water management play an important role in the agricultural on tidal lowland area. The water table on tidal lowland area fluctuates according to space and time. The water table controls at a certain depth can support the plant growth and the pyrite oxidation restraint. The model of water table fluctuation which is developed in this research based on the ellipse concept. The research was conducted on the reclamation area of tidal lowland at the fourth tertiary block in P8-12S Delta Telang I, Banyuasin district, South Sumatra province. The simulations of model show good result of estimating the depth of water table on tidal lowland area of A/B type. The proportion of variation the depth of water table which can be explained by model that is 89,6% up to 95,5% with standard error of the estimate is 0,021-0,035 meters. The parameter of the water level in the tertiary canals has high sensitivity to the model.

Abstract

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that adversely affect human health and the environment around the world. Because they can be transported by wind and water, most POPs generated in one country can affect people and wildlife far from where they are used and released. They persist for long periods of time in the environment and can accumulate and pass from one species to the next through the food chain. To address this global concern, many countries in the world joined forces with 90 other countries and the European Community to sign a groundbreaking United Nations treaty in Stockholm, Sweden, in May 2001, known as the Stockholm Convention. One of important agreement is all countries agreed to reduce or eliminate the production, use, and/or release of 12 key POPs. The Convention specifies a scientific review process that could lead to the addition of other POPs chemicals of global concern. POPs include a range of substances that include intentionally produced chemicals currently or once used in agriculture, disease control, manufacturing, or industrial processes. Also it can be produced by unintentionally produced chemicals, such as dioxins, that result from some industrial processes and from combustion (for example, municipal and medical waste incineration and backyard burning of trash).

Abstract

Air pollution from vehicle emission becomes a major problem in urban areas, including Jakarta, Indonesia. This vehicle emission worsening ambient air concentration because of increasingly use of diesel engine for urban transportation, which exhaust particulate matter. This pollutan pose adverse health effect especially resparatory problems and premature mortality. This paper presents a model for estimating the level of pollution and the impact of that pollution on human health. An air quality model is developed using Gaussian model for urban area and the social-economic impact are estimated using Dose Response function. Simulation of the model shows a dynamic model is a powerfull tool for estimating the pollution level and the impact of the pollution. The result of the simulation can be used as basic information for decision makers to design some environmental policies for reducing the pollution level from vehicles emission.

Abstract

Dioxin/furan is one of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that the government and public in Indonesia has not taken care of, as there is currently no policy on reducing dioxin/furan emission, even according to previous research dioxin/furan emission has already high. Steel industries produce dioxin/furan emission that will give negative impact to the people (cancer and death) and environment. The objective of this research was to estimate dioxin/furan emission and to determine factors that influence dioxin/furan emission concentration on the air, especially from steels industries. Methods employed in this research used emission factors to estimate dioxin/furan emission and Gaussian dispersion modeling to estimate emission concentration. The result showed that dioxin/furan emission is 9,38-13,54 gTEQ and it has to be reduced. Production is main factor to contribute dioxin/furan emission to the air. Besides that, emission concentration also depends on temperature, wind speed, height of stacks and radius from the site to the recipient. The conclusion of the research is dioxin/furan emission should be reduced, by means of first or second treatment.

Abstract

Sodium (Na) was found as one of chemical elements that able to disturb plants that grow along the Cikijing river. This river water that had been detected as contains high sodium, whereas the river water is still used by local farmers to irrigate their rice fields. The aim of this research are to identify the effect of bleaching process on the Na polluted soils toward the plant growth. Experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using rice field soils that contains high Na as the experiment material. The soils were washed using deepwater well and filtered water. Filtering was processed using zeolit and white sand, whereas rice plants were used as indicator. Result show that bleaching with deep water well and filtered water are both able to reduce the contain on Na in the soils. The application of deep well water and filtered water has shown a significant influence toward the height of the rice plants and the number of productive rice buds. The rice plants irrigated by deep water well are seen as higher in growth and bigger in number of productive rice buds compare to rice plants watered with filtered irrigation. The length (height) of plant watered with deep water well (99.1 cm) was significantly different with rice plants watered with filtered water (80.8 cm). On the other hand, the average number of 36 productive rice buds watered with deep water well is significantly different with rice plants watered by filtered water in the number of 23.

Abstract

he purpose of this study is to get information about river that has the greatest contribution to cause Pb pollution in the Jakarta Bay. Nine (9) of 13 rivers flowing into Jakarta Bay were chosen. They were Citarum, Bekasi, Cilincing, Marunda, Ciliwung, Sunter, Cideng, Angke, and Cisadane. Sampling were taken in two periods of times, rainy and dry season of 2006 with triple repeatations. pH and temperature of samples as proponent data were measured insitu. Pb concentration in the water of the river was measured by using AAS flame in the laboratory of Balai Penelitian Tanah Bogor. Data was analyzed statistically (one way ANOVA and t-test) by using SPSS 11.5 software. It was shown that Pb concentration of estuary water surrounding Jakarta Bay has been exceeding threshold level. There was a tendency that Pb concentrations of water in rainy season are lower than that in dry season except in Ciliwung River. The anomaly of Ciliwung River was probably caused by some industries which throw their wastes into Ciliwung River in the rainy season. It was concluded that all of 9 rivers have a significant contribution to Pb pollution in Jakarta Bay, and the most was from Ciliwung River.

Abstract

Traditional fish processing industries in Cisolok Sukabumi is operated mainly by women organized in Kelompok Usaha Bersama (KUB). This study is aimed to explain the influence of women characteristics on their participatory level in KUB activities exploratory research design with survey method were used to collect data. Sample populations of this study were all fisherwomen who process fish product in KUB. Forty samples were chosen with random sampling and datacollected were analysed by using structural equation model (SEM). The results show that participation level of fisherwomen in KUB is still low. Fisherwomen characteristics have no significant influence to participation level in KUB activities. Structural model obtained is not fit between hypothetic model and sample data. Therefore the model can not be applied in the field. But at the other hand, KUB have to intensify means to give the skill extension for fisherwomen so that participatory rate will increase.
