Abstract

This study aims to describe in general the performance of Wonolangan Sugar Factory and to analyze the comparison of sugarcane farming with a non-sugarcane commodity in the working area of Wonolangan Sugar Factory. Wonolangan Sugar Factory is located in Probolinggo Regency, almost 90% of sugarcane raw material is obtained from Lumajang Regency. Commodities that become competitors and the main choice of farmers to be cultivated are rice, maize, and onion. The data used in this study are primary and secondary data. The sampling method used is purposive with in-depth interview technique. Portrait performance of Wonolangan Sugar Factory in the last 5 years is very fluctuating caused by various factors such as climate impacts that are less supportive, the motivation of farmers to grow sugarcane, government policy in the sugar industry. To maintain the smoothness of the mill in the implementation of milling, Wonolangan Sugar Factory has several strategies both on the farm (garden) and off-farm (sugarcane processing at the factory). Based on the comparison of Sugar Business Result (SHU) of sugarcane and non-sugarcane planting pattern, it appears that the analysis shows that sugarcane farming with one Ratoon Cane (RC) category in paddy field can only compete with the pattern of non-cane maize farming throughout the year in South Sugar Factory Wonolangan.

Abstract

This study aims to determine land suitability class for of plantation crops, namely, coconut, clove, and cocoa in Galela region, North Halmahera, North Maluku. The determination of land suitability is determined by using the comparison method between the quality of the land on the condition of plant growth, the criteria using two methods, namely Simple Limitation Method (SLM) and Sys Criteria. The result showed the actual land suitability for coconut and clove using SLM system was obtained into two classes, S3 (marginally suitable) and N (unsuitable); whereas the potential land suitability was obtained into three classes i.e S2 (moderately suitable), S3 and N, for cocoa the actual and potential land suitability was obtained into classes N. While,  according to Sys Criteria, the actual land suitability for coconut and clove the obtained two classes i.e. S2 and S3, the potential land suitability for coconut into three classes i.e S1 (very suitable), S2, and S3, for clove into two classes S2, and S3, while for cocoa the actual and potential land suitability was obtained into classes S3. The generally, limiting factors in the cultivation of plantation crops in Galela region, North Halmahera, North Maluku include rooting media, nutrient retention, nutrient availability, erosion hazard, drainage, sodicity, and water availability. The supply of volcanic ash material from Mt. Dokuno positively affect the growth of plantation crops in Galela region. The approach method with Sys Criteria is well suited to determine the suitability of plantation land in the Galela region.

Abstract

Potential development of medicinal plants in Karanganyar is very large, because this area is famous as a center of medicinal plants such as ginger, turmeric, kencur, and temulawak. In the development of medicinal plants, the approach of organic cultivation is one of the alternatives that can be done to achieve the business. Therefore the application of technology to society about organic farming on Biopharmaca Cluster of Karanganyar was conducted with the aim to apply organic cultivation techniques that have resulted from previous studies, so it can be applied by the community to increase income and welfare. This application of technology to society activity is held in Sambirejo, Jumantono, Karanganyar. The research was conducted from March to October 2016. The results showed that the application of chicken manure affects the number of leaves, number of tillers, and the fresh weight of turmeric rhizome. The addition of manure (chicken, goat, cow) can increase all variables of planting growth which include plant height, number of leaf, number of tillers, fresh weight of plant, dry weight of plant, and fresh weight of rhizomes. Giving three types of manure (chicken, goat, cow) with mycorrhizal dose treatment there is no intraction to some growth observation variables. Mycorrhizal treatment with a dose of 10 g/plant can increase the number of tillers in turmeric. Overall the application of mycorrhizal at various doses (5, 10, and 15 g/plant) can increase plant height, leaf number, number of tillers, and fresh weight of turmeric rhizome.

Abstract

This study investigated the egg production pattern at the onset of lay until peak production in Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) fed diet supplemented with betaine and methionine. Three hundred laying quails were randomly allocated to three groups of supplementations with 5 replicates of 20 quails. The three groups of treatments included basal diet (Control) or basal diet supplemented with 1.2 g betaine and 1.2 g methionine per kg diet. During onset of lay until 50% egg production (6 to 9 weeks of age), all groups were fed a basal diet, while the supplements were applied after 9 weeks. The egg production data were analyzed with analysis of variance and followed by Duncan’s test for significant results. During week 6 to 9, all groups of quails generated similar egg production since they received the basal diet. On the later phase, supplementation of betaine and methionine enhanced average weekly egg production (P<0.05) starting from week 10 compared with those without supplementation. The egg production curves indicated that production rapidly reached 60% soon after the onset of lay. Then, egg production rose sharply and reached the peaks of more than 80%, indicating good egg production patterns. Supplementation of betaine and methionine enhanced the average overall and peak production (P<0.01) without affecting the age at peak production. In addition, there were positive correlations between average of overall production and peak production of all treatments. It can be concluded that supplementation of betaine and methionine enhanced egg production in quails.

Abstract

Indonesia is an agricultural country that is recognized as the third-biggest of cocoa producer in the world, after Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana. Widely cultivated in Indonesia, cinnamon is potential to be developed, since it has an excessive potency as an antioxidant and flavoring agents. The panelists’ acceptance of dark chocolate bars with cinnamon powder addition based on sensory tests was evaluated in this study. A completely randomized design (CRD) with one factorial was used. Variation of addition in cinnamon powder used in this study was 10% (F1), 15% (F2) and 20% (F3). Based on the result of scoring tests on colour, aroma, taste, appearance, and overall attributes of the sensory analysis, dark chocolate bar with 10% addition of cinnamon powder was chosen as the best formula. Thus, it may conclude that the highest level of panelists’ acceptance and preferences for some of the sensory attributes evaluated in this study is the dark chocolate bar with 10% addition of cinnamon powder. However, physical and chemical characterizations of the dark chocolate bars with cinnamon powder are still needed for further evaluation to gain a more comprehensive understanding about their quality attributes.

Abstract

Non-tidal swamp rice field in Poso contain total Fe in a very high amount, ranging from 1,16% to 2,26%. In a reductive or very reductive condition, Fe solubility will be extremely high beyond the level where paddy can tolerate, hence causing toxicity in paddy. Application of compost is expected to chelate Fe and form organic Fe to decrease toxic effect in paddy. A greenhouse experiment was done treatment by 5 ton/ha of straw compost and cocoa pod compost in various combination to non-tidal swamp rice field in Korobono Poso regency. Under this factorial treatment, the first factor was composition of compost (100% straw compost, 75% straw compost + 25% cocoa pods compost, 50% straw compost + 50% cocoa pods compost, 25% straw compost + 75% cocoa pods compost, and 100% cocoa pods compost), and the second factor was water management (saturated irrigation and intermittent), arranged under completely randomized design (CRD). The observed component was the level of organic Fe and available P in soil. The research finding showed that the application of compost to non-tidal swamp rice field in Poso increased the level of organic Fe and available P in soil. The level of organic Fe and available P in soil with saturated irrigation was higher than with intermittent irrigation. The increased organic Fe tended to increased available P in the soil in non-tidal swamp rice field in Poso.
