Abstract

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) belongs to multipurpose crops. All parts of sorghum can be used both as main products and derivative products; some derivative products produced from the sorghum plant consist of sugar, bioethanol, biomass, handicraft raw materials and starch. This study aims to determine the time required for testing the vigor and viability of sorghum seeds using the electrical conductivity and radicle emergence methods. The study was conducted in two experimental stages using a completely randomized design. The first experiment consisted of two factors: the number of sorghum seeds (40, 70 and 100 grains) and the volume of soaking water (75, 100, 125, and 150 ml). The second experiment consisted of two factors: research method (germination/control method, electrical conduction method, and radicle emergence method) and varieties (consisted of Numbu, Kawali, Suri 3, and Suri 4). The first experiment's results showed that the best electrical conductivity method on Suri 4 varieties were 40 seeds and 150 ml water volume. The electrical conductivity value is negatively correlated with Germination capacity, vigor index, growth of speed, maximum growth potential, and sprout growth rate. Time needed for Electrical Conductivity method in this study was three days. The germination period of 96 hours gives the best results on the radicle emergence of sorghum seed varieties. Vigor index, growth of speed, germination capacity, and maximum growth potential are positively correlated with the value of radicula emergence. Keywords: Electrical Conductivity, Radicle emergence, Vigor, Viability, Germination

Abstract

This study highlights how far medicinal plants found in many areas of Klaten Central Java are utilized to build herb culture and support health tourism, i.e. tourism which provides travellers with good habits of consuming healthy food and drinks while in the destination. This descriptive research applied qualitative approach and employed several data collection techniques which include site observation, interview, focus group discussion, and document study. Data were analysed using interactive and thematic analysis technique. Results show that most eating places including restaurants and food stalls in tourist destinations do not provide traditional drinks made of medicinal plants such as ginger, tamarind, turmeric, curcuma zanthorrhiza (temulawak), and kaempferia galanga (kencur). Tourism stakeholders have not yet realized the potentials to build herbs culture where the locals provide traditional drinks made of medicinal plants and the tourists consume them in tourist destinations to perform health tourism.

Abstract

There is a significant industrial demand for products produced by the mint plant (Mentha piperita L.), yet Indonesia cannot meet all of that need. One of the efforts to increase mint plant production is using manure and atonic growth regulators in the right concentration. The method used was a Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors. The first factor was the composition of the planting media (soil: husk charcoal, soil: husk charcoal; cow manure, soil: husk charcoal: goat manure, soil: husk charcoal: chicken manure, with a ratio of 1: each: 1:1). The second factor was the atonic concentration (0, 1, 2, 3 mL.L-1). The results showed that using chicken manure gave the best results for growth and yield. Atonic administration with a concentration of 2.05 mL.L-1 gave optimum results on the fresh weight of roots, and a concentration of 2,06 mL.L-1 gave optimum results on the dry weight of roots. The combination of the two treatments did not significantly affect the observed variables.

Abstract

Consumption of herbal medicines by Indonesian people is increasing because of the price and ease of obtaining them. One of the main ingredients of herbal medicine is mint leaves because they contain tannin and flavonoid secondary metabolites. However, the generative mint plant is very slow and needs vegetative cuttings propagation. This study aims to examine the effect of auxin-type growth regulators and the composition of the growing media on the growth and yield of mint plant cuttings. This study used a complete randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was the auxin growth regulator with four levels: without growth regulator, IBA 500 ppm, IAA 500 ppm, NAA 500 ppm. The second factor was the composition of the planting medium with three levels, namely soil, husk charcoal, and goat manure 3:3:1; 3:2:2, and 3:1:3. Three repetitions were carried out. Auxin affects the number and area of leaves. Applying 500 ppm NAA encouraged the highest leaf growth, with the number of leaves at 163.38. Growth regulator NAA 500 ppm increased the number of leaves and leaf area of mint plants, i.e., by 0.01% and 1.16% compared to the control. The growing media composition affected the crown fresh weight, root biomass, and crown root ratio. The media composition of 3:3:1 produced a crown fresh weight of 41.07 g, and the media composition 3:3:3 produced the highest biomass of 5.97 g. The media composition 3:1:3 showed the highest root crown ratio, 2.69%. Auxin and the composition of the growing media synergistically promote the growth and yield of mint cuttings.

Abstract

The productivity of red ginger in Indonesia has decreased by 9,174 tons compared to 2017. The decrease is due to the very limited area of red ginger production, the method of red ginger cultivation, which is still very conventional, and the low amount of organic matter in the soil. This study examines the effect of planting media composition on the growth and production of red ginger. The study used a Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with six treatments, namely control (soil without manure), cow manure: green manure: soil (1:1:1), P2 = goat manure: green manure: soil (1:1:1), green manure: soil (1:2), cow manure: soil (1:2), and goat manure: soil (1:2) and repeated four times. Composition media of goat manure: green fertilizer: soil with a ratio of 1:1:1 could increase the growth of red ginger in variable plant height, number of leaves in the clump, leaf area, and the weight of fresh stover with a yield of 52.7 cm; 10,75; 148,5; 2952.59 cm2; and 307.33 g. Composition of green fertilizer media: soil with a ratio of 1:2 could increase the weight of dry stover with a value of 39.32 g, and red ginger production includes fresh weight of rhizomes 111.32 g, storage weight of rhizomes 107.87 g, and rhizome volume 124.12 cm3.
