Abstract

Persuasive power in the language of advertising can be reflected in the structure of words, phrases, or clauses in the contents of written or spoken advertisements. Most ad text uses verbal and nonverbal symbols to convey the intent and purpose. The use of language in advertising is adjusted to the needs and to achieve the purpose of the ad. Linguistic research specifically looking at appraisal devices in culinary text advertisements on the internet has an important role in uncovering the ideology of their makers. Through appraisal device studies, especially modalities in ad text on the internet media will be able to know and understand the attitude of advertisers towards the reality that surrounds them, namely their assessment of the advertised goods and the assessment of their environment. This qualitative research refers to Sudaryanto's opinion in providing data and data analysis. Provision of data using the method of referencing and note taking. Data analysis methods and techniques use the method of sharing with basic techniques, namely techniques for direct elements; while the advanced technique uses the technique of fade and dressing techniques. Through a series of analyzes, it was found that there was a use of modality: intentional, epistemic, deontic, and dynamic in the culinary ad text typical of Semarang.

Abstract

Kebumen batik is not as widely known as batik from Jogja, Surakarta, and Pekalongan. This is due to several factors, such as marketing, age, and production imbalances. One way to preserve Kebumen batik is by describe and maintain lexicons and cultural meanings contained in batik in Gemeksekti Village, Kebumen Regency. Gemeksekti Village is one of the batik centers in Kebumen which has been named the village of Kebumen batik. The method used in writing this article is a descriptive qualitative method with literature review techniques. Based on the data obtained, there were 143 batik lexicons. The lexicons were 64 batik lexicons based on tools and materials, 31 batik lexicons based on the batik process, 48 batik lexicons based on motives. Batik motifs in Kebumen not only have philosophical value, but their depiction is also based on artistic value. Cultural values from several Kebumen batik motifs can be found in gringsing, sirikit, limaran, and ukel motifs. The lexicon findings can be made in to dictionaries and books containing batik motifs, explanation of motifs, pictures, and the history of Kebumen batik and other media. Both of them may be used as a means for introduction to the wider community and the preservation of Kebumen batik.

Abstract

A communicative code plays a main role in every conversation. The aim is to make a communicative goal in every situation. In this digital era, people tend to make something interesting to attract people’s attention. Namely Podcast, is one of the programs in digital platform that been used as the media to share everything in audio output. In Podcast, the host uses code-switching to make the communication livelier and sometimes to emphasize the statements or questions. Therefore, the host and the guest will have a very communicative interaction along the interview. This study aims to analysed the situational goal in a Podcast which host uses English as his switching code. The situational goal can be seen from the type of code-switching that the host used connected to the type of illocutionary forces at the speech act level.  The data are recorded and transcribed from several episodes of the Podcast. The result shows that code-switching as the media speech is deliberately use as a very functional code to reach the situational goal.

Abstract

This study aims to describe a sign and implied meaning in Surtikanti’s Geguritan Iki Gurite Sepi poetry. The approach used in this study is a semiotic approach based on Michael Riffaterre's model. Based on Riffaterre's semiotic approach, the data in this study were analyzed by: 1) Heuristic reading; 2) Hermeneutic Reading; 3) Indirectness of expression; 4) Matrix, model, and variant of poetry; 5) Hypogram. The method used is descriptive qualitative which produces descriptive qualitative data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences contained in poetry. The results of this study indicate that the semiotics used in the study of Javanese poetry or geguritan entitled Geguritan iki, gurite sepi by Surtikanti's has markers and signifiers in it.

Abstract

The purpose of research to see the determination formed by Confucianism in critical discourse analysis of the classic novel "Journey To The West". The method used is descriptive qualitative with critical discourse analysis in historical approach (discourse-historical-approach). The result of this research is the presence of a Confucian determination based on the results of critical discourse analysis of discourse-historical-approach to the classic novel "Journey To The West" which is inherent as culture. The conclusion of this research is that there are Confucian values depicted in the classic novel "Journey To The West" through the characterization of the characters in the novel so that Confucianism remains inherent in Chinese society.

Abstract

Novels are one of the literary genres that utilize language. In this case, the use of language in literary or literature, according to Umar Kayam, is not about using it correctly or not, but rather whether or not that language appropriate for specific occasion. Likewise, legal science cannot separate itself from language in terms of its application. Language in law of legal filed has its own variety which often makes it difficult for people who are not directly involved in it to grasp its certain meanings. This is because language in law require that it can conveyed in a concrete, straightforward manner, so that it will not lead to many ambiguous interpretations. It can be said that the use of language form in these two domains is in very opposite direction. Novel written by Agus Sardjono, "Legal Research: A Novel on Legal Research Methods" tries to unravel these difficulties by using literary as tools specifically to facilitate students of university  in understanding and applying legal research methods. This paper will further describe the novel in two perspectives; legal point of view and literary point of view. The novel "Legal Research" proves that literature is a  very broad as a medium, that can be used to describe various field of expertise such as history, psychology, politics, including law.

Abstract

Indonesia is rich in cultural heritage which is well-known in the world and most has been recognized by UNESCO. Cultural heritage can be in the form of objects, such as monuments, artefacts, and regions, or no objects, such as tradition, language, and ritual. The study discusses the register of English terms in the realm of conservation and preservation of cultural heritage art. It is aimed at learning English terms in the realm of conservation and preservation of cultural heritage to enrich English vocabulary, finding the form of specific terms in the field of conservation and preservation of cultural heritage, and providing an alphabetical list for terms in the field of conservation and preservation of cultural heritage in English and Indonesian. It is descriptive qualitative research with discourse analysis as a data analysis technique. Data collection techniques used are identification techniques in journal articles and books that discuss the conservation and preservation of cultural heritage. The use of registers in writing out the language in the field of art conservation and preservation, and a glossary of terms arranged systematically and in alphabetical order are urgently needed by academics, conservators, and students. Besides, the English terms in the field of conservation and preservation of the art of cultural heritage are aimed to facilitate students, lecturers, researchers, conservators, and others in understanding and applying them.

Abstract

This research aims to elaborate the meaning of message contained in lyrics of song entitled Man Anā by al-Imam al-Habib Umar Muhdhor bin Abdurrahman Assegaf based on semiotic analysis by Michael Riffaterre. This research is descriptive qualitative research. To collect data, researchers use reading and noting technique. Then to analyze data, researchers use Miles and Huberman model. The results of this research reveal that the lyrics of song entitled Man Anā in heuristic reading have scattered meanings and unified ideas. In hermeneutic reading, the potential hypogram produces the meaning of "I" expressing love and respect for "you" figure. The model in lyrics of this song is sentence man anā man anā laulākum and kaifa mā ḥubbukum kaifa mā ahwākum. This model produces a poetry matrix, which is about the position of teacher in front of students. The actual hypogram which became the background for the formation of this matrix is the words of Sayyidina Ali bin Abi Talib r.a. that there are six things that become provisions for a student to gain knowledge in learning, one of which is teacher guidance. So it is appropriate for a student to give great love and respect to his teacher.

Abstract

This research is an inventory research, namely an inventory of the folklates in East Sumba which is increasingly being forgotten by the progress of the times which continues to grow towards the development of technology and information. With this inventory of East Sumba folktales, the younger generation will get to know the East Sumba folktales which contains cultural values and local wisdom that exist in East Sumba. The purpose of this research was to collect all the folktales that existed in all areas of East Sumba, wrote them in Indonesian which was easy to understand without leaving the moral values, culture and local wisdom in the stories. The method used in this research was descriptive inventory method. The results of this study were: (1) The folktales collected came from seven sub-districts in East Sumba, totaling 13 folktales; (2) This folktales consisted of five legends and six fairy tales, others were advices about marriage in East Sumba; (3) The legends that had been successfully inventoried were The Occurrence of the Tabundung and Tidahu rivers, the Origin of Sumba People, The origin of the name ‘Pallajawa’, The origin of Lake Waimolung, and the Origin of Tairi fish; (4) The fairy tales that were successfully inventoried were Umbu Ndilu and Rambu Kahi, Putri Sejunjung Hari, Umbu Hadu Hina, Naughty Monkey, Umbu Ndilu Ngguku and The Rooster.

Abstract

The concept of American exceptionalism in American cinema is a way for propagandists to instill certain values or doctrines in the audience. This is clearly depicted through the narrative and non-narrative aspects where each dialogue, characterization, setting and also the way the camera take a shot reflects an effort of exceptionalism that is implanted throughout the film. These efforts led to the practice of propaganda against Islam and Muslim. By using a descriptive analysis method described using binary opposition theory, this research reveals the existence of American exceptionalism indoctrination which has an impact on the emergence of anti-Islamic ideology. The existence of a propaganda technique that is reflected in the film, such as card stacking, creates a cinematic terror in the film about the depiction of Middle Eastern people, especially Muslims.
