Abstract

Suluk Wujil is a well-known early Javanese Islamic literary work that focuses on spiritual pursuits and teachings. Wujil, a convert seeking the ultimate truth, is a symbolic person who carries crucial Sufistic teachings as well as the revelation of socio-religious discourse at the dawn of Islam in Java. This article uses three steps of semiotic reading to disclose the content of Suluk Wujil: narrative framework, primary sign discovery, and syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis. First, the Suluk Wujils narrative plan arose from Wujil's complaint that after ten years of spiritual study in Bonang, he had failed to enter The Ultimate Truth. The statement "Arriving in Mecca" at the end of the book is the second key sign of Suluk Wujil. This term emphasizes Suluk Wujil's spiritual qualities in relation to the spiritual path toward the reality of Islamic mysticism. Third, the paradigmatic analysis reveals that multiple parallel and contrary signs exist at the same moment. The combination of various signs forms a synthesis that leads to a deeper comprehension of the meaning of these indicators. Syntagmatic analysis leads to a better comprehension of indications that are diametrically opposed but complementary.

The Singa Dangdut performance in Indramayu offers more than just music and dance entertainment. It also features a comedic character named Menyon, who becomes the center of attention in creating a festive atmosphere. This article examines the Menyon mask figure as a form of social representation and a symbol of local identity in Indramayu. Using an ethnographic approach and cultural representation theory, this study analyzes how the laughter evoked by Menyon is not merely entertaining but also carries social critique, class expression, and the reinforcement of communal solidarity. Data were collected through direct observation of Singa Dangdut performances, interviews with performers, and visual analysis of the mask design. The findings reveal that The Menyon mask plays a strategic role as a medium of dynamic local cultural expression. reflecting tensions between tradition and modernity, while also serving as a safe space for symbolic public expression. Abstract

Santri delinquency in pesantren is an intriguing issue as it challenges the common perception of pesantren as institutions fostering noble character. This phenomenon impacts not only the individual santri but also the social dynamics within the pesantren. This study investigates santri delinquency at Pondok Pesantren Baitul Ilmi wal Quran, Sidoarjo, using an ethnographic approach to delve into the experiences, interactions, and perceptions of santri regarding factors influencing their behavior. Findings reveal two primary causes of delinquency: internal and external factors. Internal factors include boredom with daily routines, lack of motivation, and difficulty adapting to pesantren values. External factors involve peer pressure, excessively strict or lenient rules, and strained relationships between santri and pesantren supervisors or administrators. Efforts to address this issue focus on individual counseling, character development, and collaboration between pesantren and santri families. This research sheds light on the social dynamics of pesantren and emphasizes the need for more empathetic management and guidance of santri. By understanding the root causes of delinquency, pesantren can adopt more effective strategies to nurture a positive and supportive environment that aligns with their mission of moral and spiritual development.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of semantics in interpreting the cultural values embedded in the Tabuik ceremony in Pariaman, West Sumatra. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through direct observation and in-depth interviews with Pak Arif, a 50-year-old local resident who has actively participated in the Tabuik ceremony since his youth. Observations reveal that elements of the Tabuik, such as the buraq, bungosalapan, and tonggak atam, carry strong symbolic meanings. For instance, the buraq is understood as a symbol of spiritual strength and hope, while bungo salapan reflects the values of unity and the interconnectedness between local customs and Islamic teachings. These symbols are not merely ornamental; they serve as conveyors of cultural messages passed down through generations. A semantic analysis of these symbols helps clarify how the community understands and preserves the values embedded in their traditions. Thus, cultural semantics becomes an essential tool for maintaining identity, strengthening social solidarity, and reviving the meaning contained within local traditions such as the Tabuik.
