Abstract

This review presents a comprehensive survey on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles from silver nitrate precursor using plant extracts along with their characterization and antimicrobial activity assessment. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles through a green chemistry approach is increasingly in demand because it is environmentally friendly, easy to do, and efficient, especially for the purpose of antimicrobial active ingredients in disinfectant and antiseptic formulas. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles can be carried out using silver nitrate as a silver precursor and plant extracts as a source of bioreductants and capping agents. The synthesis products are then characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy to analyze their size and stability, SEM and TEM to analyze their size, shape, and surface morphology, FTIR to analyze the presence and changes of functional groups and chemical bonds, and XRD to determine the crystal structure. Several other characterization methods can also be used according to the research objectives. The obtained silver nanoparticles have a significant ability to kill bacteria so that they can increase the effectiveness of the performance of disinfectant formulas and antimicrobial formulations made from plant extracts and are more environmentally friendly.

Abstract

Formaldehyde monitoring requires electrochemical platforms with stable structures and reliable interfacial responses. This study aimed to prepare and characterize a Cu|CS–GLA/ZnO–PSf composite film on a copper substrate as a platform for further formaldehyde-sensing development. The film was characterized using FTIR, SEM–EDX, XRD, and cyclic voltammetry. FTIR supported the presence of features associated with chitosan, imine, polysulfone, and Zn–O, while SEM–EDX revealed a heterogeneous polymer-rich coating with Zn- and O-containing domains distributed non-uniformly. XRD indicated a predominantly amorphous or poorly crystalline structure. Cyclic voltammetry showed scan-rate-dependent peak separations, with ΔEp increasing from 0.632 to 0.777 V in citrate buffer and from 0.320 to 0.560 V in the ferri/ferrocyanide system, indicating strongly non-ideal interfacial kinetics. Overall, the Cu|CS–GLA/ZnO–PSf interface provides a structurally and electrochemically characterized basis for further formaldehyde-sensing development.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus continues to rise and calls for safe therapeutic leads. This study assessed the potential of triterpenoids from bitter melon (Momordica charantia) as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) ligands at the ATP-binding site through an in silico approach. AMPK (PDB ID: 4QFG) was prepared in YASARA; nine M. charantia triterpenoids and metformin were docked in PLANTS. Redocking of staurosporine validated the protocol (RMSD 0.2376 Å; ≤2.0 Å). Kuguacin J (-89.9934), Karavilagenin B (-86.4084), and Kuguacin R (-85.8514) yielded lower (more favorable) docking scores than metformin (-56.5325) and interacted with hinge residues (Val96 and Glu94/Glu100). As expected, the co-crystallized ligand (staurosporine) showed the most favorable docking score and served as an internal benchmark for pocket definition. Kuguacin J and Kuguacin R fulfilled Lipinski's Rule of Five, whereas Karavilagenin B showed one logP violation. All three compounds demonstrated high predicted intestinal absorption, were predicted as AMES-negative, non-inhibitors of CYP2D6, and potential CYP3A4 substrates. These findings identify the three triterpenoids as promising AMPK ligand candidates warranting further experimental validation.

Abstract

The development of natural cosmetic raw materials as anti-aging agents is one area of research that receives significant attention. Secondary metabolites and extracts from plants have been widely studied and found to possess anti-aging activity. Previous research yielded results showing very strong antioxidant activity of the extract and fractions of namnam leaves. This study aims to analyze the metabolite from the strongest fraction from antioxidant activity and analyze the interaction of flavonoid metabolites with elastase enzymes in silico. Metabolite analysis was performed using LC-HRMS. The molecular docking study was conducted on protein code 5A09 using Autodock Tools 1.4.7. The skin sensitization toxicity study was carried out using the pKCSM website. Ethyl acetate fraction identified 340 metabolites with secondary metabolites constituted the largest proportion of the total area (yield) (75,72%). Molecular docking of 62 flavonoids identified via LC-HRMS revealed that most compounds possess significant binding affinity toward the elastase enzyme. Meanwhile, dihydrocordoin showed the most potent interaction with a binding energy of -8.45 kcal/mol, demonstrating superior stability compared to the reference inhibitor, elastatinal (-5.01 kcal/mol). Compounds dihydrocordoin, 5-(5,7-Dihydroxy-3-methoxy-4-oxo-4H-chromen-2-yl)-2-hydroxyphenyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, and nobiletin demonstrate potent anti-elastase activity by forming stable interactions and hydrogen bonds with key catalytic triad residues (His-57, Asp-102, and Ser-195), consistently outperforming the reference inhibitor elastatinal. Toxicity test results indicated that none of the identified metabolites possess potential skin sensitization effects.

Abstract

Carbaryl (1-naphthyl methylcarbamate) is a carbamate pesticide used to cause adverse environmental and health effects when misused through water contamination. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a direct electrochemical detection method for carbaryl in aqueous media using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. In this context, BDD electrodes exhibited superior electrochemical performance compared to conventional materials such as gold (Au), platinum (Pt), and glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) due to a wide potential window, low background current, and excellent chemical stability. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry reported a well-defined oxidation peak for carbaryl at 1.30 V, with significantly enhanced sensitivity. The results showed that there was a linear response in the concentration range of 10–100 μM, with a detection limit of 5.30 μM, quantification limit off 100.69 μM, excellent reproducibility (RSD = 2.35%) and recovery (100.97%). Furthermore, SEM and Raman analyses confirmed the polycrystalline structure and high boron doping level of BDD surface. The method was validated using tap water samples, confirming the applicability for real-world environmental monitoring. These results suggested the potential of BDD electrodes for sensitive, rapid, and direct detection of carbaryl in water without the need for complex sample preparation.

Abstract

The incorporation of chickpea and soybean flours may improve the nutritional quality of gluten-free cookies, particularly their protein and resistant starch contents. This study investigated the effects of various levels of chickpea or soybean flour (10%, 30%, and 50% w/w) substituted to rice flour on the physicochemical and pasting properties of composite flours, and cookie quality, resistant starch, and sensory properties of gluten-free cookies were evaluated. Proximate analysis revealed that fortification increased the protein from 6.8% to 22.36% in the composite flours. The composite flours showed lower swelling index and higher water absorption capacity than rice flour and both peak and final viscosities decreased when compared to rice flour. The increased substitution levels led to cookies of smaller diameter and spread ratio, while the thickness of the cookies was increased when compared with cookies prepared with rice flour alone. The higher the level of chickpea or soybean flour, the darker the color of the cookies (lower L* values), but the higher the redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) values. The resistant starch content increased as well, being the highest in cookies produced with 50% of chickpea or soybean flour (18 or 14.98%, respectively). Sensory evaluation showed no significant differences in color, shape, and aroma, while significant differences were observed in crispiness, taste, and overall acceptability. Overall, the use of chickpea and soybean flours as partial substitutes for rice flour is a promising approach for improving the nutritional quality of gluten-free cookies, particularly their protein and resistant starch contents, while maintaining acceptable sensory properties.
