Abstract

One of the urban problems is poverty, as is the case in Surabaya, which had a poverty rate of 136.37 thousand people in 2023. This poverty rate is the result of the Surabaya city government's intervention through various poverty alleviation programs. Previously, the poverty rate in Surabaya was 138.21 thousand people in March 2022, which decreased to 136.37 thousand people in March 2023. The success of the Surabaya city government in reducing poverty raises the question of whether this reduction in poverty is purely due to government intervention through its programs, or if there is also a role played by social institutions, specifically LAZIS Muhammadiyah Surabaya, which has poverty alleviation programs similar to those implemented by the Surabaya government. This research uses a qualitative research method with an empirical approach. In this study, it was found that LAZISMU (Lembaga Zakat Infak dan Shadaqah Muhammadiyah) Surabaya focuses on helping the poor residents of Surabaya to alleviate their burdens through at least six main programs, namely: education, health, social-humanitarian, economy, environment, and dakwah (Islamic preaching). These programs are almost identical to those carried out by the Surabaya government in its poverty alleviation interventions. Our research found that the social philanthropy programs conducted by LAZISMU Surabaya contributed to the reduction of poverty in Surabaya. Keywords: Poverty, Philanthropy, LAZISMU

Abstract

This article attempts to outline certain concepts from the Qur'an and the Bible that discuss God's tenderness. God's gentleness is not just a concept; he love reflects His infinite compassion, wisdom, and forgiveness. An important aspect in this study, apart from knowing the nature of God's Most Gentle nature from the perspective of the Koran and the Bible, is also to compare them using transcendence and immanence analysis. Through this cross-religious study, researchers will try to assemble a spiritual puzzle that connects Islamic and Christian teachings in understanding the nature of God, the Most Gentle. This research uses a qualitative comparative method. The study displays and explains the verses in which there is an explanation of the gentle nature of God. Then these verses are discussed with the transcendence and immanence of Thomas Aquinas. This research found that in the Qur'an, the transcendence of the Most Gentle God shows that Allah goes beyond the limits of human understanding, while His gentleness is reflected in events such as the translation of the Prophet Yusuf. On the other hand, the Bible highlights Jesus' transcendence through prophecies and God's plans that humans do not fully understand, especially in His coming that does not match worldly expectations. Meanwhile, immanence highlights His tenderness that permeates and is involved in every aspect of life. Even though there are differences, similarities still exist in the image of God who is Most Gentle in giving teachings, providing sustenance, and being involved in human life.

Abstract

This article examines the intellectual dynamics of Nusantara scholars in the 19th century, a period marked by the paradox of colonial oppression at home and outstanding achievements in the Islamic scholarly centers of Haramain (Mecca and Medina). Using a historical-descriptive approach, this study explores how Dutch colonial pressures actually propelled the intellectual journeys of Nusantara scholars to the Middle East. The main focus is on the contributions of figures such as Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani and Sheikh Mahfudz at-Tarmasi, who attained prominent positions in Haramain. This article analyzes their contributions to teaching, writing influential works, and forming transnational intellectual networks. Furthermore, it discusses the impact of these achievements on the development of Islamic thought in Nusantara, including their influence on reform movements and resistance against colonialism. The article concludes by highlighting the resilience and intellectual brilliance of Nusantara scholars who, despite facing adversity at home, managed to reach the pinnacle of scholarly excellence on the global stage. These achievements not only constitute a historical pride but also lay a crucial foundation for the development of Islamic discourse and intellectual identity in Indonesia in subsequent periods.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a multireligious country, faces challenges of conflicts often carried out in the name of religion. The Qur’an and Tripitaka, as the sacred texts of Islam and Buddhism, teach values of peace, tolerance, and harmony that can serve as solutions to interfaith conflicts. This study aims to compare the concepts of peace in the Qur’an and Tripitaka, analyze their similarities and differences, and evaluate the application of these values in resolving interreligious conflicts. The research adopts a qualitative approach using a comparative study method. Data were collected through textual analysis of the Qur’an and Tripitaka as primary sources, along with relevant secondary literature. The analysis identified peace concepts and their social relevance. The findings reveal that the Qur’an emphasizes peace through Iṣlāḥ (reconciliation) and Salám (peace), while the Tripitaka highlights Metta (loving-kindness), Karuna (compassion), and Upekkha (equanimity). Both religions reject violence, with Islam focusing more on practical solutions, while Buddhism emphasizes individual transformation. The peace concepts in the Qur’an and Tripitaka can form the foundation for interfaith dialogue, fostering tolerance and harmony in society. Implementing these values is crucial to resolving conflicts in diverse communities and promoting interreligious harmony.

Abstract

Abstract: This article discusses religious practices and education that occur in the United States in the digital era. As one of the pioneers in the development of digital technology, the United States is very interesting to explore. The encounter of religion with digital technology has led to a transformation in religious activities. This transformation includes many things from rituals and social activities. The scientific approach used by the author in writing this article is a qualitative approach. The literature study method is the method chosen by the author. To obtain research data the author quoted from literature, journal articles, books, news media websites, and survey institute websites. In this approach, the author analyzes written literacy sources to gain information and understanding of the topics discussed. This research clearly explains that digital era religious rituals package rituals online. For example, there is the phenomenon of digital holy books and prayer guides, online Sunday services, online recitations, and so on. Then the spread of religious messages through electronic media or televangelism over time develops and expands. Religious education is given little attention there because of the decline in the spirituality of the population. Although relations between religions have many challenges, there is sufficient broad access to moderation. Keywords: Digital Religion, Religious Practice, USA.

Abstract

Tolerance of differences is the primary basis for maintaining state stability. In a country whose citizens adhere to different religions, the holy book can be a link between religions because the holy book contains principles of community life. The holy or sacred book teaches commendable behaviour in society, including tolerance. By exploring the concept of tolerance in the Quran and Tripitaka, it is hoped that it can communicate Islam and Buddhism in inter-religious tolerance. This study uses the literature analysis method to identify and analyze several sources related to religious tolerance in the Quran and Tripiaka. The main findings of this study indicate that religious tolerance in the Quran emphasizes doing good and being fair even though people are of different religions, not forcing people to become Muslims, not insulting the gods of other faiths, and adhering to their respective religions. Topics related to tolerance in the Tripiaka include not being fanatical about religion, not being forced to become Buddhist, and responding to insults with kindness. Both holy books express equal rights for living beings regardless of religion.
