Abstract

This research is aimed to reveal of how Merida’s character deal with gender stereotypes, whether she fall within the stereotypes rule or not, the writer used the theory of Sex Role Inventory by Sandra L Bem to measure Merida’s masculine and feminine traits. Next purpose is to examine the process of Merida’s gender stereotypes changes by using the theory of Feminist Identity Development by Nancy E Downing and Kristin L. Roush. This research is categorized as a qualitative research and it applied the technique of coding in analyzing data. The result of this study found out that Merida’s character did not embrace the gender stereotypes due to her dominated masculine traits character rather than feminine as contradictory to gender stereotypes. Merida's character has ten masculine traits and three feminine traits. Furthermore, the process of Merida’s stereotype changes began from revelation stage and the climax is she survived to the stage of active commitment.

Abstract

This study is focused on the challenges of the ideals womanhood in Victorian era in Ellen’s character. Ellen is one of the main characters in the The Lodger novel. The novel was inspired by Jack the Ripper killings that was set in Victorian period. This novel tells the story of a serial killer terrorizing the capital. This novel is focused on one of the lives of the London family who are trying to survive in economic difficulties. This research used The Lodger novel as the data source and for the data the researcher used the narration and dialogue that contained the challenges of the ideals womanhood in Victorian era.  By using mimetic approach, the research aimed to answer the following question. The research question is how the main character challenges the ideals womanhood through her roles in the The Lodger Novel. The result of the analysis using the ideals of womanhood in Victorian Britain by Lynn Abrams theory, the researcher found seven ideals challenged by Ellen Bunting, they are; 1) the icon, 2) the ideal woman, 3) at home, 4) household management, 5) the ideology, 6) wife and mother, and 7) social responsibility.

Abstract

Mekanisme pertahanan diri merupakan proses dorongan yang melindungi individu dari kecemasan dan masalah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui konflik yang dialami tokoh utama dalam novel Magic Hour karya Tissa TS dan Stanley Meulen dan mekanisme pertahanan diri tokoh dalam novel Magic Hour karya Tissa TS dan Stanley Meulen. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian berupa frasa dan kalimat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa; (1)Konflik eksternal yang terjadi pada tokoh Raina, ialah ketika konflik Raina dengan Gwenny, dan Dimas. Konflik internal yang terjadi pada tokoh Raina ialah, ketika Raina mengalami konflik batin setelah mengetahui jika Toby menyukai dirinya, konflik batin Raina ketika Dimas mengatakan perasaanya di depan Gwenny dan orang tuanya, serta konflik batin Raina ketika Gwenny kecewa karena telah mengetahui jika Dimas menyukai dirinya. (2)mekanisme pertahanan diri yaitu represi, sublismasi, proyeksi, pengalihan, regresi, agresi/apatis dan Fantasi. Tindakan represi yang dilakukan oleh tokoh Raina, Gwenny, Dimas, dan Toby ialah tindakan diam , ketakutan dan berbohong, tindakan sublismasi yang dilakukanToby ialah ketika ia tidak bisa menyampaikan perasaanya secara langsung, sehingga ia melakukan pengalihan dengan cara membuat lagu untuk Raina, tindakan proyeksi yang dilakukan Raina dan Gwenny ialah marah dan menggeretak, tindakan pengalihan yang terjadi pada tokoh Gweeny dan Raina ialah mencari sasaran untuk meluapakan amarah, tindakan regresi terjadi pada tokoh Gwenny ialah manja seperti anak kecil, tindakan agresi/apatis yang dilakukan tokoh Gwenny ialah egois dan tidak peduli dengan orang lain. Tindakan yang terakhir ialah fantasi, tindakan yang dilakukan Raina ialah bekhayal.
