Abstract

Art behind Islamic architecture actually based on geometric patterns, developed through a continuous practiceover the centuries after centuries by the influences of various earlier cultures such as Greek, Roman,Byzantine, Central Asian and Persian. Basic shapes like squares and rectangles play significant role in Islamicarchitecture. The reason is, it might recall the principles that govern the order of the world- ‘Purity’, couldonly be resembled by pure forms. The façades built by rectangular bricks tend to shape the built form inregular modules. This brickwork casts shadows in strong desert sunlight and creates a three-dimensional effectas light is welcoming message from the Devine source, as it is regarded in all religions. In addition, variouspointed starry patterns are common practice and get extremely complex when the outer points are joinedtogether and intersections are connected in a systematic way. Another mode is based on organism of floralforms which recalls the feminine nature of life giving. Again, nobody will argue about the contribution ofcalligraphy is the most patronized art for decoration. Why have Islamic world choose this universal phenomena? As Allah’s creation is pre-decided, the credit of all creativity belongs to the almighty. Also to his messenger, the holy prophet; who taught us to think in this way. The world is only a shadow of real world; here man is on abewildered search. May be their firm belief; what man can perceive, can only discover the geometric forms toconstitute designs which were already existed before in the ‘real world’. Discovered geometric forms, therefore, tries to exemplify that perfect reality because creation of Allah has been obscured by the sins ofmankind- Art of the complete surrender.

Abstract

Cut Mutia Park is a city park which is an integral part and attached to the main courtyard of the mosque cut mutia. This park is a green open space that serves as a public space and generate the aesthetics of the city. There are seven critical elements that need to be studied to determine the public's perception of the park. Knowledgeable public perception of these elements, useful for city authorities in the development of city parks for future. The results of the research showed that of the seven elements studied, only two elements of which will be a positive perception, namely aspects of cleanliness and coolness, while five other aspects got a negative perception. As a result, generally Cut Mutia Parks research object only gets the value perception of -0.24. Details of the value obtained by each of these aspects are: -0.52 for comfortability; +0.13 for cleanliness; -0.003 for freshness; +0.26 for coolness; -0.77 for harmony level; -0.42 for beauty level; and -0.32 for interesting presented. Low perception from respondents indicated that Cut Mutia Park need better design such that it can give added value to the mosque and the environment surrounding. At the end can be said that the city authorities need to further improve attention in structuring of the park, to makes Cut Mutia Park become more comfortable, interesting and favored by the public, and also strengthening the power of the mosque as the central point.

Abstract

Architecture during Qajar dynasty has witnessed significant developments. The change which was particularly prevalent in advanced form, was the combination of two function: mosque and school. An important issue in the mosque-school typology is the spatial layout of the space, so that the two functions could maintain their independence and do not cause flaws to each other. The aim of this study is to understand how the combination of religious and educational functions in one building is. In this research Aqa-Bozorg mosque-school is analyzed by heuristic analysis method in order to recognize the different factors such as space and quality of human cognition. The result shows that this place with religious function, is not limited to religious ceremonies, vast assemblies with social or political motivation, rather it could be known as set of usual belief or hidden ones which are existed in profound layer of thinking and culture of society. So not only formal speech or sermon, rather customs, architectural features, art sights and even arrangement of main features in a religious building could convey implication to the audience who are consciously or unconsciously affected and make their ideology based on this.

Abstract

The 19th century was a period of significant transformations in Ottoman architecture in terms of the professionalization of discipline and the actualization of new construction technologies and architectural styles. The basic reason for this situation was the changing politics of Ottoman rulers that was based on the aim of achieving westernization in every aspect of life. In this context, an architectural medium has occurred especially in public building constructions where western based design approaches dominated the architectural production. Whereas, public buildings having different architectural characteristics than this westernization based architectural production, were also constructed in different peripheries of the empire. It is argued in this article that public buildings with polyglossia architectures were built in those regions that were generally concentrated on the facades and had architectural qualities different than the public building constructions executed mostly in İstanbul and other central cities of the empire. In this framework, the characteristics of these polyglossia observed on public building facades that contributed to the formation of architectural diversities in the empire are aimed to be examined. These polyglossia approaches that didn’t transform into stabled architectural styles are evaluated within the framework of the design components and constructional elements applied on the buildings.

Abstract

In many Qur’anic verses and Hadith, the term ‘to construct’ or ‘to build’ is frequently mentioned. It means that there are some principles in this kind of activity in Islam, that can be called Islamic principal of architecture. Therefore, it is very important for Muslim architects to have a deep understanding about these principals, and to bring them to the operational level. Basically, to build it to make some social, technical, economical, and psychological arrangements. Great changes that occur within the relationship of human and their environment in fact influence the way architects deal with these arrangements. Islamic principal of architecture give Muslim architects a basis in their architectural activities that derived from the Qur’an and Hadith. Based on these principals, the arrangements will have to considerate hablumminallah, hablumminannaas, and hablumminal’alam, which are the core of the Islamic relationships. The result of these arrangements then could be applied in five important things in architecture: function, form, technology, safety, and comfort, with a deep consideration in contextuality and eficiency.

Abstract

This paper elucidates the emergence and evolution of arabesque with specific reference to  the case of arabesque in Turkish art and architecture. It is argued here that arabesque is a fusion of styles rather than a pure and homogenous style. Furthermore, the paper aims to show that although the arabesque style appears to be a fanciful and freely organized manner of artistic treatment it is based on a very complex mathematical logic which is expressed through abstractionism. In this context, the grammar of geometry is elaborately used in the  implementation  of abstraction. Here, general characteristics as well as different modes or  types  of arabesque are discussed. Starting with the etymological roots of the term, the  history of its use in the literature  is  explored  through  the  paper. After  the  inquiry  of  its  material  and  pragmatic  aspects,  the development of the arabesque style is evaluated with regard to its transformations that took place along with its injection to Anatolia and mixing with Turkish culture. Finally, the morphological character of this fusion is put forward.   Keyword: Morphological character, geometry, fusion of styles, arabesque

Abstract

Islamic residential architecture has some common architectural and architectonic elements issued from shared values such as privacy, simplicity and sobriety. Applied to residential architecture, these values led to some characteristic spaces and architectural elements such as patios or arcs. However, the Islamic civilisation is composed by different cultures spread on a great geographical area; this variety induced different interpretations of these elements by using different building shapes or materials. In this paper, we will present an example of this interpretation in the historical coastal city of Cherchell in northern Algeria. The city of Cherchell is a historic coastal city that witnessed the passage of several civilizations before the arrival of the Islamic one since its founding more than 2500 years ago. This specific situation as historical coastal city allowed the exchange with different civilizations around the Mediterranean Sea, giving rise in the Islamic period to a typical earth architecture characterised by a specific arch’s typology. The objective of this article is to present an interpretation of Islamic heritage housing architecture in a Mediterranean historical coastal city (through two specific elements: building material and architectonic element). The long term aim of this study is the dissemination of traditional technics and know-how in order restore cultural heritage buildings and construct new projects with a strong Islamic identity.
