Abstract

Mastering Arabic language is essential for Muslims as the language serves as a fundamental tool to understand and implement Islamic values. It is due to the fact that sources of these Islamic values, as in al-Qur'an and Sunnah, are accessible primarily through Arabic language. Both formal and informal education undertakings to master the language are then encouraged in this community. In connection to the dissemination and internalization of child-friendly values, it is necessary that the teaching of Arabic be carried out within this framework. Using descriptive analysis as the method, this paper discusses how these values may work in an Islamic environment such as Darunajah Islamic Boarding School. Data collection is done through observation, in-depth interviews, library research, and triangulation. In this study, components of Arabic language teaching which include educators, students, material, learning processes and evaluation, are put in relation to child-friendly values. The study shows that formal teaching of Arabic in Darunnajah Islamic boarding school has been in line with the framework of child-friendly values, in the part of educators while dealing and manage their students, also in the part of the textbooks and teaching materials, their contents, oral drills and presentation, also in the part of learning and evaluation processes.

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the emerging sociolinguistic trends in Nigeria with the view to ascertaining the use of English as a first language among its speakers particular in Calabar, Nigeria. The study adopts Vygotsky’s (1978) Social Interactionist Theory. The theory is relevant because it accounts for the intentional and changing linguistic attitudes of children believed to be influenced by their early exposure to English as the language spoken by adults and peers within their immediate environment. Data for the study were generated through primary sources, particularly by means of participant observation and administration of questionnaire. Using random sampling technique, 468 questionnaires were distributed to children within the school age bracket of 06 - 13 in 10 selected Private Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Calabar. With the aid of 20 trained research assistants who are bi/multilinguals in some Nigerian indigenous languages and English, 400 questionnaires filled under supervision were retrieved from the respondents from where the data were extracted and collated for analysis. Findings indicate that 37 percent of the pupils/students are monolinguals who speak only English as their ‘first and native language’. Similarly, 32.5 percent of the target population understand their mother tongue(s) while 30.8 percent of affirm that they speak the indigenous language(s) fluently. Also, it is observed that a total of 63 percent are bi/multilinguals in their mother tongue(s) and English language and could switch or mix codes. The reasons for the increasing preference towards English language, the researchers have observed, range from the persuasive influence from parents, teachers and peers, and the consequences of globalization in addition to the multiple domains of use of English language. This trending communication practice would continue to increase the growing population of English speakers in Nigeria while the indigenous are further endangered.

Abstract

This study sought to answer the question on the level of English language anxiety in the ESL and mainstream classrooms of 61 total number of English major students utilizing the 20-item self-assessment questionnaire of English Language Anxiety Scale (ELAS) developed by Pappamihiel (2002). Actual one-hour footage of classroom was documented through a MONACORR audio-recorder, thrice with each teacher. The recorder was given to one of the teachers’ students without knowledge for the authenticity of their oral corrections. After having identified the existing oral error corrections by the English teachers through audio-recording, a self-made questionnaire was answered by the students to find what is the rate of occurrence of the identified oral error correction styles. The frequency count, weighted mean, and Chi-square tests were the statistical tools used to answer the problems posed in this study. Findings divulged after the transcription, teachers were only utilizing elicitation, explicit correction, recast, and repetition. Moreover, students perceived that elicitation oral error correction type is often used while explicit correction, recast, and repetition are only used sometimes by their English teachers.  Meanwhile, ELAS results indicate levels of language anxiety in the ESL classes and mainstream, although language anxiety is significantly higher in ESL classes. As to correlation, it was found out that the rate of occurrence of explicit correction, recast, and repetition as perceived by ESL English major students of their English teachers’ oral error correction types have no significant relationships to their English language anxiety. This study suggests that oral error correction has nothing to do with the English language anxiety of English major students and that English teachers shall retain the practice of the oral error correction for it does not give high level of learners’ anxiety in learning English.

Abstract

The use of authentic materials for language teaching is common. Yet, there is not much information about what type of instructional materials benefits learners. The purpose of the study is to find empirical evidence of whether non–fiction authentic materials are more superior that fiction authentic material. The researchers used an experimental design to answer the research question. The population of the study was all students who took an essay writing course at University PGRI Wiranegara in the academic year 2019-2020. The sample was taken by using a systematic random sampling method which results in two equal numbers of students in two experimental groups. Group A was taught with non-fiction authentic material, while group B was taught with the fiction authentic material. The researchers used ANOVA to analyze the data in SPSS 22. The process of teaching and learning followed the writing as a process approach and was done in a blended-learning setting because of the pandemic of COVID 19. The result shows that there is no significant interaction between content type and proficiency level (F(2,30) = 1.347, p = .275). The main effect of content type on writing performance was not significant (F(1,30)=.001, p .973), but the main effect of proficiency level on writing performance is significant such that the students who have a higher level of writing proficiency have better performance than the students who have a lower level of writing proficiency  (F (2,30) = 5.653, p .008). The researchers conclude that both types of authentic materials are equally effective to improve the students’ essay writing performance.

Abstract

The emergence of the Covid-19 as the global pandemic with its social and physical distancing consequence has affected educational practices. This paper reports the expereince of carrying out a study on applying youtube video for writing of descriptive text in EFL Class. The purpose of this research was to find out whether the videos can develop students’ ability in writing descriptive text or not.  The study took place in the time before and during the covid-19 emergence. As quantitative research, this study applied pre-experimental design. The participant of this research was the 1st year students of one of the prominence senior high schools in Manado, Indonesia. They were 26 students of language class. The results indicated that the mean score of the post-test is significantly higher that of the pre-test. This points out that the use of YouTube video in teaching the writing of descriptive text is effective. However, the emergence of Covid-19 pandemic influenced the implementation of intervention that later affected students’ achievement. The result of this study is not fully in line with the outcome of the previous studies which hypothetically resulted in two to four gains of scores. In addition, it implies that the use of YouTube video in this pandemic transition period seems to be helpful mostly to low level students as they displayed higher gains. Besides, this study denotes the challenges for teachers and students in the Covid-19 pandemic era namely the competence in online learning, and the internet connectivity access and learning mode system.
